Average 150 Club?

A 9 iron is my go-to-club for 150yrds.

PW on a very good day. JDM Titleist VG3 irons.

 

A lot has to do with how I'm hitting them that day, wind, elevation...but all things neutral, yes, my 9iron.

Loft on club and altitude

 

A 7 iron isn't a 7 iron across the board

 

I use an AP2 8 iron at sea level playing 1/2 mile from beach in so cal

In warm conditions I'd muscle a wedge, cold or morning I'd hit 9. Ping Iblades.

i used to be able to hit a ultimate warrior balls out pw.

then i graduated to a smooth 9 then a knockdown 8.

now 41 with a host of injuries and graphite shafts and

now use a smooth 7 iron. whose cheater loft i may i add

is yesterdays 6 iron lol

7 iron in the summer. 6 iron if there's no run. Used a 5 iron a lot this winter at 34F and wet and windy course.

When I started years ago it was s 9 iron. I keep using longer clubs.

 

These days It’s usually a 7, although I’ve hit everything from a wedge to s 5 iron conditions dependent.

 

At this rate it’ll be a stock driver before you know it!

If it is wind in my face a choke-down 7i if normal conditions that is a full 8i

Not sure what you mean? Do you mean brand and model of the club?

 

I'm an "average joe" at about a 10-ish handicap and carry my 9i Ping i10 about 145 yards throughout the year. Mid-summer is longer and winter is shorter.

Average Joes aren't 3 handicappers... not even close.

Went an got a reality check today.

 

Saw an instructor with a Trackman.

 

5 swings, average carry:

 

9 iron: 132 yards

8 iron: 145 yards

7 iron: 160 yards

Which Trackman facility? The one in Monterey Park or the one in the Industry Hills area?

Just started playing again and played my first round in years last week. Had 156 to the pin, slightly back from center. When in CO a few years ago I would have hit wedge because of the altitude. Having gotten older (63) and heavier (read fatter) since then so I grabbed a 8 iron.

 

Flew the green by quite a bit. I'm a few thousand feet up where I live now, but still I was a bit surprised by that as I'm a couple thousand feet below what I was in CO (5200'). So now I'm not really sure what I hit for 150, but I'll figure it out. Eventually. :)

 

That was using Ping i E1 with Recoil 670 F4 shaft.

Driver swing is low 90s, total 230-240, varies +/-20 depending on conditions.

 

3w - 15*, really consistent 200, +/-10.

The longer clubs vary much more bc of rollout, and the shorter clubs are much more wind dependent. I hit the 47, 52 and 56 so high on full swings that it's better to flight bigger clubs lower and at 75pct.

5 iron for me. From that distance, I'm looking to land short and roll it on if the green allows.

 

Guess I picked up some distance this winter. 6 iron now.

Play Callaway X-20s. Stock 150 shot is a smooth 6 or a full 7 depending on the trajectory I want to hit.

If I'm hitting it solid I'm an 8i at 150.

Playing bridgestone j36 pocket cavities.

Stock loft for my 8 is 38 degrees

Under normal summer conditions of a flat lie in the fairway a 7 iron with my Wilson Di-7's. Even with my higher lofted blades from 35 years ago I still hit 7 iron. The advancement in balls and clubs over the years has been inversely proportional to my declining strength and swing speed :taunt:

Weather's warmed up a bit and I'm learning to have a better tempo, so I've now got my 150 club to be an 8i, and I could probably push a 9i if the wind was at my back a little bit. Lately I've been carrying my PW around 125 -130. Feels like I'm swinging "slower" too but I think I've just got my tempo and sequence down a bit better than before.

all about the ball strike. But warmer drier weather = more distance. Winter time I usually drop a good half club

Fly it all the way, full 150 carry to finish close to 160? That's a 7i. Or what club I pull for 150 yard shot under normal conditions? That would be a 8 or 9 iron, probably the 8.

For the past 5 years or so, I'd just try to hit a big, full 9i but this year I've really grown to love dialing that back to 140ish and hitting an 8i a little more flighted to 150 (used to try stretching 8i to 160-165).
