New $500 Flightscope personal launch monitor (MERGED)

so Flightscope is the first of the big laugh monitor manufacturers to come out with a mass marketed launch monitor. 1 i think its great for the game, but i find the unit to be a little underpowered in my humble opinion for a lot of what all us golf addicts are looking for. this was probably for a low risk if the unit flopped-which still could very well happen. I'm very excited for it but i wish it had more power under the hood. If this unit was 1,000USD and had radar but was able to do spin without metallic dots and club parameters, i would practically be begging to have it. i think that if they built the unit a little bigger those features could easily be added in. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens in a possible second iteration.

 

However don't be surprised in a few months to a year if trackman comes out with a better all Doppler radar (no metallic stickers needed) competitor. and since they hold more patents on the product for using Doppler technology i wouldn't be surprised if they make a superior product. it would be a win-win for the product segment to see these two compete.

If Flightscope has a scalable product they could overtake the entire launch monitor market. Have the Mevo with a base feature set that you purchase for $500. A few months later you want spin axis. You purchase the licensed feature set that is digitally signed by the serial number of your Mevo and you install the software upgrade. A year later you would like to play the WGT courses then you pay another license fee for the upgrade and repeat the process. A lot of people cant purchase a $2k launch monitor but give them a platform where they can keep upgrading then I think you have a great investment.

 

I think the limitation on spin axis will be hardware related. If the Mevo is measuring spin axis but simply not displaying it... well let's just jailbreak the thing and write our own display app that shows all metrics and displays flight.

 

I would bet the limitation to measure side spin is the unit being level. Don't the bigger units have a self leveling feature?

I see both Trackman and Flightscope offer Normalization settings. I couldn't find much about flightscope normalization but trackman provides solid info on their blog:

In an email to Flightscope today, I was told that the range ball vs premium ball normalization feature is something being looked at to add to the mevo app later down the road. The rep also mentioned that testing of the mevo to their other monitors yielded very accurate results using the sticker both indoors and outdoors. So, I will be anxiously awaiting reports here about outdoor numbers without the stickers.

I just want this to give an accurate distance measurement without the dots for range use. I'd really like to be able to dial in my distances with my irons and wedges

 

At the end of the day, you're still hitting range balls which will give you different distances and flight than what you game. Unless you're at one of those "fancy" ranges with ProV1's.

 

I'd still like to see the numbers if they were accurate, even with range balls.

Does anyone actually have a mevo at this point or is it still just talk? Sounds great if the bugs are already worked out but so far I've still been happy with my skytrak. Would be sweet if skytrak would get combined with the skypro for a full package of ball and swing/club tracking.

Fun fact: if you take PGA tour average trackman numbers and put them in the flightscope optimizer (online), then vary the spin rate by 1,000 rpm in both directions from the standardized averages, the yardages only fluctuate +/- 3 yards with a seven iron and +/- 7 yards with a driver. So, if I am outdoors using mevo without stickers, as long as it is giving me reliable ballpark spin numbers, the carry yardage is still good enough for what I am using it for. According to the rep I emailed at flightscope, the mevo numbers are no wind, flat surface- normalized numbers even if you are hitting balls into the wind and a range that is not level.

Only if you want accurate spin numbers for your shipment. Also if you need to know spin axis that is a shipping upcharge because UPS has to upgrade their tracking software to provide that feature although it is likely that their shipping hardware does support that measurement.

It's only short range tracking. You'll get initial ship data then it will have to calculate the rest of the shipment.

I don't know much about Doppler, so maybe my question is silly. But here goes: How can a device that can measure backspin, not also be able to measure sidespin? I mean, we're talking about a device that can, presumably, measure 10K rpms or more, but can't figure the axis those are spinning on?

The new x3 apparently has 20 radar units inside, each one dedicated to a specific parameter. If I had to guess, that's why mevo is limited, due to size and cost.

My understanding is that the carry yardage is calculated, not measured. So, if you are hitting into a stiff headwind, the mevo carry data is not going to match up with what you witness in those conditions. It is "normalized" to reflect conditions of no wind, flat from hitting area to landing area, although the app allows the user to input elevation. Is that what you mean by "normalization"?

It's not the same level of technology and lacks the Doppler sophistication (by a lot) of their high end units. It's the same reason your not get HLA (and the same reason it's not measuring the whole ball flight).
