New Ping driver - 2017

Quick question for those who have played the Ping Tour shafts. How much stiffer is x-stiff vs stiff in the 65g and 80g shafts? Previous fits for me include Aldila Rogue Silver 68g in x-stiff a 75g Hzrdus Red 6.0 and a heavier Tour Sensation propietary shaft in stiff (83g) in a Henry-Griffitts driver. Want to grab a used G30 LS or a G LS 9.0 degree driver in a Tour shaft and don'f have a feel for how stiff these are vs a Project X, for example. I had a Tour stiff in a Ping hybrid I no longer have, but last driver fitter I went to suggested x-stiff, at least in the 60-gram range. But some say the Ping Tour is fairly stout, so assuming others have tried these out. Thanks.

dmeeksDC, for you the PING Tour 65 might be similar to the Aldila Rogue Silver. unlike the Tour 65 all PING Tour 80 are tipped 1". IMO because of that the Tour 80 might play a little more like an Aldila Rogue Black.

Everything I have been able to gather shows the Ping Tour 65 to have a profile almost identical to the Mamiya Elements Chrome.

Why not just call it the Elements Chrome? Why does Ping insist on using the house name?

H M,

PING just likes it. I think the anonymity of the maker of their "house shaft" makes them feel beholden to no one during marketing, and signifies that PING engineers contribute to the shafts kinda being "just the way" PING wants them. they could call they new steel iron shaft the Nippon AWT, but they don't. the Tour shafts could be called out as Elements Chrome (if that's what they are) but PING doesn't. I got no problem with any of it. and have felt the OEM shaft option made for PING by their chosen sources have been great.

Why would you want to pay more money for the same shaft? If it's the same shaft.

Without a doubt. Why would UST allow a $250 shaft to be sold by Ping for $50-$65? Why would anyone buy a Chrome from a club fitter if you can get it for much cheaper through Ping?

I think that's one of the reasons PING has never identified who makes their shafts. I must say, the Alta shafts are outstanding and do feel like Chrome's. I played nothing but USTs for a long time. Maybe I'm crazy, but they feel the same.

Just as a side note, if you've worked with a lot of the PING stuff, its pretty easy to figure out the OG manufacturer of the OEM shafts just by cutting off the grip.

It doesn't actually say who built it but depending on the paint and the codes its easy to figure out. Lots of Aldila and UST.

As far as OEM designed shafts or not, the TOUR series shafts from PING are the real deal as far as performance goes and yes, as other have pointed out they are mostly UST. are they Chrome? I have no idea, but they certainly are stable.

As far as a new driver goes its gonna be tough to beat the overall performance of the G

All I know is since at least the Anser woods and the G15 days, whatever shaft Ping puts an "R" flex on and sticks in a club seems to suit me as though they had built it completely around my swing. They all work well, the weight and balance of the clubs is perfect and they have just the right amount of give during the swing without feeling at all loose or whippy (which with my brutally quick tempo isn't always true).

So I don't care where they source them. They obviously have a fixed set of performance and feel targets that they are able to hit time after time. As opposed to Callaway who might have a "R" shaft that suits me in one model, I need the "S" in another and yet another won't work for me with any stock shaft. Titleist and Taylormade too fail to make the stock "R" shaft in this year's model feel anything at all like the "R" from last year's.

I prefer the Ping approach of consistency at the expense of having the shaft manufacturer's name filed off...

I second the notion that the Ping Tour 65 and Tour 80's seem to be the Elements Chrome. When I was fitted I asked my fitter if the tour shafts were a similar version of the Elements Chrome. All he did was smile and said I seem to know my stuff.

All I can base my knowledge on was my fitter in TX insisted I put in the stock shafts instead of going with the USTs I wanted. He's right down the street from UST and I've walked through the place with him. He's never led me wrong. About golf anyway! HA!

Yup. That justifies the production price because you make it up with volume.

Let's be honest here. Some guys are NEVER going to play a driver with a shaft that has "Ping" or "Titleist" or "Taylormade" written anywhere on it, just as a matter of pride.

That was pretty much me before I put the PING stock into play. I'm definitely not losing anything. I can't vouch for TM, but the PING stocks are really good.

Whatever new driver they come out with.. they need to do something about the sound!!

I loved how G30 and G performed and how forgiving they were but the sound were just too awful.

Hot melting to deaden the sound is not viable option for most as their heads are already pretty heavy to begin with.

I agree! It's the only reason I don't game a G30, I absolutely hammer it, but need ear plugs on the tee box. ?

The one and only player that took his gamer driver to callaway that didn't have the Callaway Epic beat it was playing a ping Driver either a G or GLS with stock Alta shaft.

Where is this claim supported?

I know on the Mizuno website, Mizuno claims its JPX 900 hasn't lost a ball speed "challenge" in house on their robots against any 2017 driver.. ever.

I need to hit the G vs the JPX 900. Either of those will be in my bag by the end of the year. I'm partial to both as my G30 LST was dependable but shorter and I've gamed Mizzy drivers in my younger years.

Not sure shafts can be good or bad. They just might feel/perform better to some people vs others.

This is an interesting question that I just answered myself a few weeks ago. Short answer is yes, they are that good.

I had a G30 head with a UST Chrome shaft that I gamed for a while. Then I swapped in an Oban Devotion and I thought it was awesome.

Traded up to a G driver and pulled the stock shaft and put the Oban in... never even swung it with the stock Alta shaft, just set it in the corner.

Thought about selling the Chrome and stock shafts since I thought the Oban was the one. Took my son to the driving range with his new G LS and we were trying out all sorts of shafts and for some reason my head ended up with the stock Alta shaft on it... I took a couple of swings with it and I was like WTF? Much smoother and easily 10yds longer than the Oban, and repeatedly straighter drives. My son ended up with the Tour 65 shaft in his G and I ended up keeping the stock Alta in mine. Needless to say I have a Chrome and Devotion with Ping adapters going on the bay soon.

Very interesting that the Tour shafts are very likely rebranded Chromes since that shaft was one of our test shafts. I got the Tour 65 for $30 with an adapter, so it was a steal compared to the Chrome for over $100 used w/o adapter. Don't get me wrong, the Chrome and Devotion were great shafts but the Alta just seems to work that much better. I'm definitely not ashamed to game a stock Ping shaft if I get results from it. I wonder what the Alta really is under that blue paint?

I remember when I got the G30 I searched the forums to see what shaft most folks were having success with and it seemed then like the majority were getting best results with the stockers. I was in the camp that figured aftermarket must be better, thus the Oban and Chrome shafts. Now I wish I would have just stayed with the stock shafts and spent my money elsewhere.
