Using a Tee on Par 3's

Recommended Posts

I started to read that. 20 mph head wind and getting 16-18 yards of roll out with an iron?

That's where I stopped.

I heard Lee Trevino was asked why he uses a tee on par 3's. "Cause I play for money".

Edit: I don't know if he really said that, but it's good enough for me. I also was told by someone that while playing in Arizona he was approached by a little man (Corey Pavin) after throwing a club and told he shouldn't do that because he wasn't good enough to care that much. That story is also good enough for me. I don't throw my clubs when upset and always use a tee. I do wish someone had a story about snap hooks.

When I play an executive course I don't but thats because I'm using the round as a driving range/practice setting. Gives me a true (or truer) reading of distance and lets me simulate for the most part a normal round shot. In a normal round I do what Jack said and tee it every time I'm allowed. One less variable when the balls on a tee. I have done the old school trick of teeing a fairway wood by pounding the ground to build a tee but that was mainly to get in my opponent/partners head a little. The younger guys go "what exactly are you doing" the older guys go "who does that anymore". Always smile and wink then hit it fat :)

Tee it 99/100 times. Every once in a while I'm hitting to a back flag or a ridge and need to make sure I keep it short. I know my numbers well enough that I don't want the extra 3 or so yards a tee might give me, but for one reason or another I want to play it back in my stance instead of hitting higher and I don't want to play a fade. Its a rare combination of things, but sometimes it just makes sense to want to take a full swing and purposely not get all I can get from it...

Always a tee but just barely up enough to call it a good lie . If a long iron i tee it up s touch and sweep it off the tee . If you play off Bermuda boxes you will know why. Some are dead into the grain and you can effect your shot a great deal without a tee

We had a short debate once on whether the players could tee up every shot in a scramble (not just the tee shot, but approach shots, everything).

Although we quickly reached agreement that such a move seemed a step too far even in a scramble, nobody questioned why one would want to tee up a shot if provided the opportunity even where you were already permitted to improve your lie.

I always tee it up.

Tee it up every time, tee it fairly low on short irons little higher on long irons.

Will go a little higher if I am between clubs and trying to take a little off. As hitting a little high on the club face tend to take some distance off.

I tee it up, mostly.

Sometimes, I will hit my club into the ground to create a little bump to put the ball on. Mostly a tee though.

Hit em good

I tee it up if I want to hit it really high or get a bit of extra spin. Otherwise is off the deck.

I only tee up the driver. When I practice, I'm hitting my shots off the grass so why would I tee it up on a par 3? It would be completely different if you had to drop your ball and play it as it lies. I wonder if Nicklaus did it because of the grass conditions on the tees? I would assume that the grass on the greens, fairways, and tees are shorter now than when originally started doing it.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
