The No Ace Club - How close did you get this year?

Recommended Posts

In our mens leagues monthly gunstart, the first hole was at about 140 yards, front of the green, and the tee is elevated, so we have a clear look at it. I landed a few feet short with a high shot, and after a few bumps it rolled at the pin softly. Already mid-flight I knew it was good .... it hit the stick and ended 2 feet to the side :( By draw I was in a group with the club pro, neither of us understood how it didn't go in

Well, at least I figured I would get closest to the pin for the day .. but not even that! :D

Oh ... this is a "no-second-ace" post, but I figured I could tell it anyways ;)

Never made one. Closest this year was 137 yards at my local Flanders Valley GC. Hit a less than a foot past the hole and spun back leaving me about five feet.

That said, my wife just made one yesterday at Barefoot Landing, Norman Course in Myrtle Beach.

I landed one about 2' from the hole, roll out to 8' this weekend. About a month back, stopped one about 18" from the hole (Both of those are a 190yd slightly uphill). And about a week before that one, stopped one about 2' from the hole on a 165yd uphill.

I mean, eventually a guy's got to get a good break right? .... right??? :swoon2:

You name it, I've done it. Lip Outs, roll by's, pin bangers, flag catches, and other cruel twists. This year, another lip out; about 160, slightly downhill into a breeze off the left. Green slopes a bit from back to front. High draw holding against the breeze- looks good from tee.. landed about 10 ft wide right about 5 feet short... bounced once to the left a bit past the hole, then took the break back toward the cup. DENIED.. after lipping it finished about 12-18" away...

What's REALLY cruel over the year (45 years and counting) is that I only couldn't see the ball just missing or lipping out twice. One was uphill and another was a tucked pin behind a bunker and mounding. So I don't know if they lipped out, rolled close or what... All the others I saw the torture first hand..

I think most golfers could tell similar stories, but there's a bit of irony as well. Many times I have holed out from the fairway, up to 180 yards out, just can't get it done from the tee box. :(

Last week I knocked one to about 3 inches from the ladies tee (150 yds) on a par 3 that plays 235 from the mens tee. Played the ladies tee because there were some folks laying out on a blanket right in my duck hook landing zone and decided it wasn't worth potentially killing an unsuspecting park goer. Glad that one didn't go in.

So... what I consider one of my worst nightmare holes: On the side of a "cliff"/"hill" going into a river/bay, tee box is on a hill, green across the little valley, sand trap on the right. 176 to the middle of the green, thought I over shot it. Got to the green and it was 4.3ft above the pin, mark was about another 4 feet. Closest yet, but I know it'll be my closest for a while.

I put one to about 5" yesterday. Jarring it would have put me into kind of a pickle though. It was an early morning round where I was playing two balls. Not a soul around to witness. Probably wouldn't have been able to play out the round.

I have never had one. This year I came close twice.

1. Local club playing the easiest par 3 on the course. The ball actually went down and then lipped back out to 6 inches.

2. Pebble Beach hole 5. 146 yards from the gold tees and the pin was just behind the first mound. It was again an 8 iron with a very benign cut to work toward the pin. The ball dissapeared as it landed and my caddie said it might be in. It wasn't in...but tap in for my first birdie at Pebble. What a great place that would have been to get my first hole in one!!

Played in a charity scramble a month or so ago on Pinehurst #3. Had a pro on the hole who told us it was 119 playing 110 downhill. Hit a 3/4 pw on the left side of the hole where it trickled down to the hole. When got up to the hole we found it hanging over the edge of the hole. I could not place the closest to the hole post where it stopped otherwise would have damaged the cup. Have no idea how it stopped 1/4” from going in.

Still looking for the first hole in one.

My club's Friday night social league has a "par 3" contest a couple times a year where they set tee markers in the middle of the fairway on the non-par 3s to make them all short holes. Sure enough, one of them was playing 115, put a GW past the pin and spun it back in.

I still am 50-50 on counting it or not. I have the ball in a little plastic cube though on the offchance it never happens again!

A couple weeks ago I had one roll to a foot away, directly behind the pin. It looked like it might be in until we got almost to the green. :censored2: I am starting to give up hope.

Played the Links at Gettysburg this past weekend. Number 8 is about 265 slight uphill par 4. Hit my driver with a baby draw, and it looked good the whole way. Thought it would roll on the green, and I'd be happy with a 2 putt birdie. Ball ends up taking a really nice bounce left and trickles near the hole. Being so far away, we all knew I hit a good shot, but I figured, due to depth perception so far from the ball, that I was probably 10-15 feet away. As we get closer to the green it becomes clear: It's sitting 18 inches above the hole.

My buddies are all going wild for me, but one quickly reminds me: "No gimmies for this putt." They all finish out the hole, I step up. It's dead straight downhill to the hole. I decide, I'm just hitting it, no thinking on this one. Ball hits the back of the cup (really the grass/dirt part), starts to fall, BUT it doesn't. Instead, it hits the back of the actual cup, and comes out to the side 6 inches away... Made the birdie. Never thought my closest would be on a par 4.

Last night I hit a nice shot into a 110y par 3 and the ball mark was right in the middle of the patch from last week's hole location. Doh!

I once clipped the side of the cup with my tee shot, sending the ball sideways deep into the bush and lost. It left a nasty gouge on the side of the hole. What was almost an ace turned out to be a dirty 6. Golf... you gotta love it.

Hit the flagstick last night, short one only 135 but green is about 15 yards elevated, hit a easy 8 iron beautiful flight, came down about 6 feet in front of the hole, took a hard bounce nailed the stick and ended up about 8-10 feet past. Par :(

Not my closest to an ace but first time hitting the stick.

I've hit it to 3-4 feet a lot this year. Hit tons of greens on par 3's but only got 1 pin in league this year. Closest I've ever been was leaving the ball overhanging the cup. (I made the putt)
