Callaway Rogue and Rogue Pro Irons

I stopped by the local GG yesterday and hit 8-10 balls with Rogue Pro. The feel has definetly been improved compared to the steelhead line. I also was impressed with the look of the Pro in hand, compared to the pictures.

I've hit both the Pro and Regular Rogue and I would agree on the improved feel/sound over the Steelhead line, they did get that right. Now if they would just get away from the damn polished chrome, the demo irons have been at our club for a few days and they look like crap already.

Someone said there will be an apex replacement in fall?!

So don’t buy the rogue pro yet?

My buddy who is a short hitter was just fit into the Rogue Pro X with recoils. From a Game Improvement stand point these things are legit. I'm super tempted to get the 4. I mean it's 18.5*!!!

Just Rogue X I think you mean. Rogue pro is very different.

I'm playing Steelhead Pros. I don't love the look of them but the numbers and performance were hard to argue with. The Rogue irons I think look way worse and busier. I'm sure the performance is nice. I do love the longer blade lengths of the Steelhead Pro which from the pictures I've seen, the Rogues have shorter blades. Might be preferred by some, but my wallet is happy about the changes.

Had a chance to see these today and I was one who knocked their appearance when first photos emerged. But the Rogue Pro looks much better in hand. All of these heads are designed larger than the Apex and X Forged lines, and the Rogue X is pretty dann big.

The Pro is thicker than most players irons, but the bevel on the topline hides it well. I could play it no problem. Looks like a high-tech version of some of the forgiving irons Callaway made in the early 2000’s.

All reports are these are easy to launch and long. I will say this: If you had not played in a while, you could go warm up with these at the range and hit the course. With their beefier profile, they’d mitigate a lot of rust! I wouldn’t mind playing a round with them to see how they do.

I think we have to remember the intended audience. My buddy who is a 20+ handicap tried steelhead and big bertha last year and hated both. He went Cobra, but now he's in love with that Rogue X. He's the one I was talking about who was wow'ed by them. I came in wanting to hate them so I'm not gonna rain on his parade since it's not my style of club.

+1. The idea is to get the ball in the hole in the fewest strokes possible. We want people to love the game, not dread it.

Hit these for a little fun tonight as my buddy was getting a fitting. Usual 6 iron with my MP18 carries ~174. These were super long carry was ~190 with 7 iron which I believe is 30* so it would match the loft of my 6 iron and actually half way decent. Didn't get to see the the Pro's but it didn't look as bad I would have thought. Wouldn't play them myself right now, but if I didn't have as much time to practice they might be worth a solid test.

Got my set in today and was really surprised with the performance and feel of these. There was no lack of spin with the short irons and the height was impressive with long and mid irons. The look of these across the set is fantastic. I had been playing a set of blades and was looking for some more forgiveness while not sacrificing too much it looks category. I will give more feedback after a few rounds.

One knock on them is limited shaft options unless you want to pay for the right to pay for another shaft. Srixon and Mizuno crush Callaway in offering flexibility and choice to the customer for the same or less money. No contest.

That’s the right attitude. The one thing I’m going to miss Ian that the iron lineup had distinctively different sets geared towards similar players.

Need distance?

Big Bertha - hollow body hybrid like irons

Need distance and a higher launch?

Steelhead - longer toe and undercut cavity

Then it would morph into the Apex and Epic lines.

Now it’s all kind of looking alike.

nothing I've seen from Callaway the last couple years has touched the overall performace of the apex cf-16 line for the mid handicapper, obviously the price point is a little higher than others but the apex seemed to be a decent amount more consistent than the epic line for example

The thread is about the new Rogue irons. Not Apex and not Epic.

Have you at least tried the Rogue irons yet ? Any of them ? If not, what's your point ?

  • 2 weeks later...

Hit the rogue pro at GG. I compared it to the TM M3, both very good clubs. However, from an overall perspective the rogue pro performed a little better, and it was the clear winner in the looks department. The M3 was considerably more bulky to my eye.

I understand the rogue pro is not forged, and uses vibration dampening to enhance feel (as most manufacturers do) but this is a real impressive club that performs very well.

I’ve been playing the original Apex for a little over 3 years now with XP 95 ®. I’m 67 now and have lost some distance with them, in addition I have a little tendinitis in both elbows. So I went to CC for a fitting. The P790 won out in the looks and feel dept but the Rogue Pro was a little longer with much better dispersion and was the club that was recommended by the fitter. A big problem was that, CC fitted me with Accra ICWT 75 M3 ® shafts which were way to pricy for me. They didn’t have the Recoil 760s/780s to try which Cally offers with a surcharge.

Later, I was able to hit the Rogue Pros with the Recoils and I’m thinking about making the switch. With the Trade in Trade up 50% bonus it’ll be a good deal and much less than the 790s would have been.

My only concern is if they will be as forgiving as my Apex due to less offset and will the Recoils work as well as the Accra shafts.

Decisions, decisions.....any thoughts?

Who's offering the 50% more for the trade in?

BOOM !!! This is how you select a club (IMO). Loft for loft I've found that all the irons I've tried are within a yard or 2 of each other.

Personally I'm not surprised the Rogue is better than the 790 dispersion-wise but unfortunately,,,,,,, I also believe that the shaft is the main ingredient vis-a-vis "dispersion".

I've found, for ME, the heavier the shaft (not stiffness), the better the dispersion.

Good luck.
