Single Length Updates (post'em up!)

I just got off the phone with Cobra as I had some questions around the shafts of the Forged Tec OL. I ordered the AMT in s300 and am just not crazy about the shaft. Before I went off and started tearing them all down I had questions.

1) the Forged Tec are dual bore. Apparently the AMT are .370 but the heads should take a .355 shaft without a shim.

2) each iron should be built like a taper tip shaft if that makes sense. So if you are ordering .355, then order a 4 iron shaft, 5 iron shaft, etc. if .370 then cut the shafts tip and butt as appropriate for the iron number.

The person I spoke with told me he was going out to the production floor to answer my questions right from the horses mouth.

Just received a used set of Edel SLS-01 irons.

Holy moly these are fantastic! By far the best set of irons i have ever played. So easy to hit, the ball just want to fly striaght, oand nice and soft feel.

This is for sure going to be a gamechanger for me.

The set is 5-SW, but judging from ease of hitting the 5 iron i need to order the 3 and 4 iron soon as possible.

Playing with Paderson 95 gr. stiff flex at 38".

Grabbed a set of Cobra Forged Tec black one length irons last week on a sweet deal. I've been wanting to try them out for a while and figured it was too good to pass up. Love the finish, the stealthy look, and the white line on the bottom groove. Smaller detail, I know, but I've always loved that little touch on irons.

So far I've only hit them in the garage but the feel is outstanding, even better than the Forged Tec VL irons that came out a year or two ago. I'll get some time on the course with them this week. Really interested to see how they perform. I love the concept behind them...I think it just makes sense standing over the ball.

What I'd like to see is a company offer hybrids that match their iron length counterpart. A lot of people complain that hybrids are too upright and hook machines, so lop off an inch (manufacturer) and make the heads slightly heavier to bring SW up.

Not sure if this is exactly what you're talking about, but Pinhawk's SL hybrids do exactly that. Same lie and weight as their iron clubheads.

The idea was also used by Mizuno for their 2011 and 2014 Fli Hi hybrids. I'm using the 2011 version 6 hybrid right now but will replace it with a regular hybrid because I'm looking for something that flies higher. :taunt:

I'm thinking of my own DIY set (I'm thinking 3-6 as short as possible with hotter irons - not necessarily one length, and 7-GW normal length), and I wonder if choking down on a club would be a good estimate.

For example, say I hit my 3 iron 215 in my variable length set, but with a hotter 3 iron I hit it 225 and higher. I'd choke down until I get it hitting 215, then cut it or get a shaft at that length. Do you guys think that is a good estimate or is the weight/feel going to be far off? Or do fitting places have every iron in every lie and length?

The answer to your last question is no, not typically.

I have built a couple DIY SL sets, as well as sets that use 1/4" gaps between irons, or 3/8" gaps. So you can do just about anything. What you want to do requires adding weight, and in the case of a 3 or 4 irons, a lot of weight. I honestly think you'd be better off starting with a Pinhawk 4 iron as a cheap experiment. Then if it is promising, build your 4-6 irons with Sterlings to get the hot faces. And just forget about doing it with a 3 iron. The Sterling 4 iron is 19 degrees, so it's really a 2 iron anyway, LOL!

Or forget the Pinhawk and just have someone build you a Sterling iron. More money but if you feel good about jumping right in....

I have spent the summer trying to do my best with VL irons. It's good up to 7 iron but iffy after that. I simply make a better swing move with a shorter iron. So I'm really feeling it's time to go SL again.

What I cannot for the life of me figure out is why I can hit a 38.5" 6 hybrid so nicely, but a 37.5 or 38" iron is so unwieldy. Even after trying to match shaft weight and swingweight to those of the hybrid. Jeesh. Anyway, I'm tired of fighting the 6 and 5 VL irons, and I do want to use irons down (up?) to the 27-28 degree loft range. So I'm going to have to do something....

My FMax one length irons came in today. Will be heading over to Edwin Watts to compare against the F8 OL graphite.

To recap:

Trying to decide between:

1. FMax one length regular graphite with stock midsize grips or

2. F7 one length regular graphite or F8 one length regular graphite, each customized with midsize grips.

I hit the F-Max OL 6 iron as well as I hit the stock Edel. Stock F-Max stats (using Senior shaft and masking tape):

Club Speed = 73 MPH

Ball Speed = 106 MPH

Launch angle = 21.7 degrees

Peak Ht = 29 yds

Backspin = 5450 rpm

Carry = 147 yds

Total = 159 yds

The offsets are a little greater on the FMax than the F8, and the lofts are much weaker in the longer irons on the FMax. For example, the FMax 6 iron is 28 degrees vs 25.5 degrees on the F8 and 26 degrees on the F7.

The shafts on the FMax are meant to launch higher than the graphite F8 (and F7) shafts. And the FMax shafts are about 13 grams lighter than the F8/F7 graphites. The F8 shafts with the Cobra Connect grips are 1/4 inch longer than the other two.

With this shaft weight difference, combined with the stock midsize grips on the Fmax, the FMax swingweight is C7 compared to D0 for the F8/F7 graphites with standard grips.

The lighter FMax shafts are available in the F8. But not the F7.

Finally, the F8 has the varying lie angles throughout the set that are supposed to equalize at impact, while the FMax and F7 have constant 62.5 degree lie angles.

Cost (4-PW):

FMax = $530 (no Cobra Connect)

F7 = $599 (from Cobra with no Cobra Connect)

F8 = $899 (from Cobra with Cobra Connect)

If I can get good height to go with longer distance on the F8 or F7 graphite 6 iron, I will sell that FMax and go that route. Maybe with the FMax shafts to optimize peak height if need be on the F8.

If I cannot get good height to go with longer distance on the F8 or F7, I will stick with the F-Max.

Think I am going with the F8. All tests done with Q Star Tour.

6 iron - F8 then FMax

Club Speed = 84/79

Ball Speed = 114/108

Launch angle = 17.5/20.5

Side Spin = 185L/595L

Backspin = 5690/5750

Peak Ht = 28.3 / 28.8

Carry = 160/148

Total = 173/160

PW - F8 then FMax

Club Speed = 75/72.5

Ball Speed = 91.5/88.6

Launch angle = 35.7/35.8

Side Spin = 79L/408L

Backspin = 4300/4420

Peak Ht = 36.2/ 34.0

Carry = 117.5/112

Total = 127/121.5

My driver speed tested in the low 90s FWIW.

Has anybody tried the variable length set? Splitting the long/short irons between the single/variable lengths might be a good play. The variable lengths would be designed for the different lengths whereas having Edel chop the single length short irons down doesn't sound optimal. Plus you'd save some money as well.

I've been playing OL for a full year now and my GIR is up to 50%. I play and practice once a week so I'm thrilled with that. The OL hybrid has not worked out however and is going up on eBay. The top end of the bag is definitely unsettled. I thought I read somewhere that cobra is coming out with OL woods?

I just picked up 1 of the Cobra OL Utility Irons 2/3 (the loft is variable from 18* to 22*). Wow, so Much easier for me to hit straight than any hybrid has been. It is a such a nice transition for me. SO now it goes:

PW - 4i Forged ONE length

19.5* Forged one Length Utility Iron

16* 4w Ping G25

8.5 * Ping G400 LST

I think I might finally be settled here.

In looking at the F8 OL, I was curious that the graphite vs steel swingweights were close (D0 vs D1), while the graphite shafts were 43g lighter.

Typically, that would mean a swingweight difference of 4-5 points everything else equal. I wondered if they were adding weight to the graphite heads. So I asked Cobra.

They responded today that the balance points are 1.5" different in the graphite vs steel, which brings the swingweights closer.

I am contemplating the Edel SLS01 SW...I think it's more like an '11 iron' and would suit me pretty well...I just have a mental block against not having 2 wedges at the bottom of the bag...feels weird man.

You might find a 58 will do everything you need from that non-SL wedge.

Hello to all.I'm going to a Cobra demo day tomorrow interested in one length irons a couple of questions

1 the wedges how easy is it to use one length wedge from a bunker?

2 what I have been reading the long irons have a low flight short irons go sky high can they put a high launch shaft in long irons

and a low launch shaft in the wedges. I can't handle the AWT shafts at all as I can not fell the club head

4 have all of your handicaps dropped using one length irons

I'm fairly tall also and yes my hc has dropped significantly. I play the ftb ones and Love them. I have all ol irons in my bag and my chipping and sand play has never been better. I think the majority of those statements are mental. I don't think the short irons go any higher than vl irons, But the long irons I do struggle with. If hit flush I can elevate them, but for the most part they go lower. It's not a big deal for me but I'm contemplating getting a ol hybrid to replace my 5 iron. The one thing I'll say to any one thinking going ol is they aren't silver bullets. A bad swing is still a bad swing, but all setups are familiar and make it easier on me. I'm not sure about the shaft question but I have the recoil 780s with smacwrap in Xs and I've shot my lowest score twice with them (70), and shot an easy 74 last night after 8 beers and 2 three putts. I had it for the summer. Great club out of the rough on par fives or to get back in play but could never get it quite high or straight enough elsewhere. Good strikes were a mid-high draw. Sold it and thinking about the utility instead.

Due to an injury in April, resulting in finally having surgery mid July means I have not played in quite a while. I am 4 weeks off surgery and should be cleared to play when I see the doc this week. To celebrate I played yesterday not knowing what to expect, which was the case for the driver, but my Nippon shafted Cobra F7 OL irons (inspired by NASCAR) performed beautifully! I was off a little, but scrambled well. Striping the 4I, PW was money, and all others were on point. Any bogey/db was due to dumb a** mistakes..

Coming off such a long layoff and surgery I expected the worst, but I shot an 80..

Received my Edel SL irons Friday. Played a nearly flawless front 9. Irons are great. The feel is great. They are the real deal. My other set is composed of Miura irons and various other Japanese brands. It is a Japanese only bag. In terms of quality, very difficult to compare. But I am getting older. Miuras are tough on the body. Like my car, I needed some American muscle. I put together a bag of American clubs I believe are the best. Perhaps this is the greatest compliment to the Edel iron. After crazy research and a great fitting by a reputable Edel source, there they are in my bag.

Question for you and for anyone who bought the Edel SLS-01 used: How did you decide what used set to purchase? Did you get an Edel fitting first? Did you purchase based on your current gamers?

Fitting accounts from OsnolaKinnard and others that bought new from Edel, suggest the fitting is pretty important. Also, the Paderson shaft design and flexes seem fairly unique.

I'm seeing SLS-01 sets for half the price of new that would seem to fit me in terms of length and flex. Just don't know if the extra $600-$800 makes that much of a difference...
