I don’t know if Varner was lying, but if he really wanted to lie he could not have mentioned that his ball even moved because I doubt anyone noticed it. And Varner didn’t even know he was going to be penalized because Bryson was telling him that he wasn’t going to be. Lerner, Duval, Bryson, and Varner all had the ruling wrong. Only the official knew it.

 

Once a player grounds his or her club behind the ball not on the green, does it matter if we are certain the wind moved it or is it a penalty no matter what whether the wind moves it, the player moves it, or the ball just moves as it settles?

When he was explaining to the official, I suspected from his body language and eyes that he may be a little deceitful. Then, when he stepped over to the ball and "demonstrated" what he claimed to do during his pre-shot routine, it was blatantly obvious that he was "remembering incorrectly."

So Varner's ball moved after he addressed it and grounded his club in the fairway. He was given a one-stroke penalty. If the ball had moved on the green after he addressed it, they would only have penalized him if they were more certain than not that he caused it to move?

 

Seems like everyone, especially the announcers, were dancing around the elephant in the room. Varner seriously claimed that he did not ground his club? I counted five times, myself. Even David Duval, whom I really like, was claiming something to the effect of, "He was in his routine, and probably didn't realize he had grounded his club." At one point, Duval even said, "... I couldn't tell you if I ground my club when I go through my routine..." That BS is about waist deep. A professional who has hit countless thousand of shots in his career doesn't know whether he grounds the club or not during his pre-shot routine?!!

 

I'll bet Johnny Miller would have said what I was thinking. HV3 was flat out lying.

nah... when youre yoked to the moment you arent paying attention to if it grounded or not , They shouldnt even ask a player.. he cant honestly say . BUT if pressed to answer im not going to guess in a direction that hurts me . for sure

It is amazing how much the TV changes the appearance of a golf course and how much it flattens the greens. I'm watching the Shriners on TV today on a course that I am extremely familiar with, and it just looks different on TV.

i remember watching the masters for the first time in hidef! could really see the contours all around!
