TaylorMade M5 cracking already ???

Here comes the Boom

Recommended Posts

based on the huge white mark, it was definitely hit on something. Just my 2 cents.

also, where did this person get this head since they have not been released yet? Possible that it is counterfeit.

There is multiple reports of drivers cracking and TaylorMade is reportedly aware of the problem which is caused by a bad batch of carbon fiber according to our local GG !!!

It's not bad carbon fiber, it's a bad design. You have a overlapping piece of carbon on the bottom of the club right in the spot where the tee would strike. I have a demo at the store where I work and it only took about 6 balls to see this is going to be a problem.

There’s already been reports of this issue, hopefully they fix it before release but dk how they will.

There was one other. It was hit on the toe.

So, fir those keeping track... 2 reports. Both due to people hitting them on things. This one looks fake. 6 doesn’t have a track.

I can see this being an issue. Especially the piece of carbon fiber covering the weight towards the front of the club (you can see it in the last picture). Sucks because it’s a great driver.

Regular tees wouldnt do this. Looks like IF it is because of the tees, it is the large tees in mats. But still skeptical.

The plight of the 30 handicaper bottoming out on a mat and blaming the tee.

What are fiberbuilt tees?

These:

https://shopindoorgolf.com/products/2-adjustable-tee-system-5-pack

They are a hard plastic tee inside a rubber sleeve. It adjusts up and down. Very popular but I can definitely see how it could smash that thin piece of carbon fiber as it rebounds after impact with the face.

So the recoil of a tee can break the carbon sole pieces. Not sure I buy this theory. The tee should bend in the direction of the clubhead’s direction of travel not launch upwards like a spike. But in the fraction of a second that the clubhead is passing over the tee knocking the tee forwards, the tee is wreaking havoc on the carbon pieces. Nah, can’t get my head around that claim. The drivers pictured look like they’ve been abused.

Did you look at the picture of the tee in question? It’s certainly possible.

There’s a PGA Superstore in my area where they just let people hit balls willy nilly without assistance or supervision. I’m surprised stuff like this doesn’t pop up more often with the kind of abuse those demo drivers are put through at those stores. I don’t see this being that big a problem for TM but it might change the way the retailers let their customers demo their product. Or it might change what tees they decide to use in those hitting booths. M5 is a good driver. I doubt this will stop very many people from buying one but it most likely be a pain in the a** for the retailers.

Yes, I checked the link and have been to a couple shops with the tee in their matts. Still not sure this is the cause of the carbon failing. The cracks follow the edge of the track and hammer head slot which makes me think the damaging force was the slamming of the clubhead on the ground/matt. I also don’t see scraps from the tee anywhere.

Please explain why a plastic tee can destror carbon fibre.

According to Newtons thirds law: When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first body.

Basically saying that the the plastic tee and the carbon fibre feels the same amount of force, but carbon fibre gets destroyed but not the plastic tee? So you are saying that plastic is stronger than carbon fibre.Or am I missing something?

Carbon Fiber is a woven material layered with some kind of bonding agent - resin, epoxy, etc. Like a golf shaft, different fibers and bonding can change its strength in different ways. Cracks in a sheet of carbon fiber do not indicate the object that hit it is stronger, especially if that object is impacting the carbon on the edge, where the carbon fiber structure is weakest. Some woven nylon fabrics can stop bullets but not if it's hit on the edge. Think of a brand new golf shaft. The exposed tip can be easily chipped and damaged if you aren't careful but you can bend and torque the shaft without breaking it.

The point is that carbon fiber is not a uniform material and will not withstand the same forces in all directions.

I stopped in to Golf Galaxy this weekend to look at some of the new clubs and saw the same thing. Every M5 demo in the TM hitting bay looked the same way on the bottom. That's not a club I'm buying. Even if TM "takes care of you" and "makes it right" I don't want to deal with sending it to them repeatedly for a replacement.
