G410 irons...took the leap

Both the 400 and 410 are chrome plated stainless steel. They won't rust. After you wear off the chrome layer the yellowish-silver nickel layer will show through, but that shouldn't happen for some time unless the clubs are heavily used or by hitting a lot of sandy range balls or similar.

I hope my g410 irons get a nice 1/2 dollar sized brown spot and I keep beating my buddies with players cavities and their quarter sized wear spots.

I was at a golf shop today looking at the G410s again. For fun, I also looked at some smaller forgings like Titleist MB/CB, Srixon 785s, Callaway X-Forged/Apex Pro, etc.

I'm still a supporter of Ping G series irons. Having looked at many past G series irons, the G410s do look great.

But I think I realized that this "looking great" is like having been at the pub drinking endlessly for hours. It doesn't take much for anything to look great...???.

I don’t understand this. This is my G400 9-Iron which has between 150 and 200 rounds plus dozens of trips to the range on it, and is probably the iron I use the most in my set.

There have been a LOT of complaints across Ping's iron product line regarding the finish durability. G700, G400, G410, i200, i210, iblade, pretty much all the chrome plated irons have a topical satin treatment on the chrome that Ping denotes "Hydropearl", and whatever they do to create this finish the bottom line is that it marks up easily. These marks are just superficial, but they do standout and guys that like their equipment to remain pristine looking sometimes complain. From my experience the 410's do show this sort of wear but not to the extent of the earlier clubs. Ping has refined the finish into "hydropearl 2" and it does hold up better than the original finish, but it's not as durable as the finish some other companies such as Mizuno apply to their chrome plated irons. Again though, this is just in regards to the superficial outermost satin application, not the ultimate durability of the chrome which is excellent.

I hope my G400 irons wear. It will mean they've been in my bag a long time and are doing right by me. I rented a set in Vegas last year and bought a set a couple months ago. Been hitting over 50% GIR with them. That's exceptional for me. Not the greatest off tight fairway lies. I'm working on that. But out of light rough or fairway fluff or Bermuda, they are money. Only con is total lack of feel and spin can be a little inconsistent. Sometimes I get roll out and sometimes I suck it back 5 feet. But that might be more strike related than equipment related. Everything feels the same. But don't care as they go long and straight. If the G410 are better, they must be great!.

It's remarkable how many times you've had to repeat this over and over and over again. I know there's a lot of people in these forums, but good god. I would have given up by now if I were you. You're gonna have to do it all over again when Ping comes out with the next generation of irons unfortunately. Good on you Nessism. You should get what ever the GOLFWRX version of the Nobel is for your patients alone!

I have a Srixon utility 4 iron that I bought in "like-new" condition looks like it's never been hit. Bought with the intention of swapping it in for the G400 4iron. The G400 4 iron is easy to hit. The Srixon utility still looks like it's never been hit.

I think we need a pinned post over on WRX that specifically details Hydropearl, how it wears, and how to strip it with Barkeeper's. Maybe even a "before and after" photo. Then keep pointing all of these things there, instead.

I actually think the g25 are a better looking club. I bought a set a 410 irons and while I do like them I found them to be a little hard feeling at times. My son has g25 irons so we switched and I think I prefer the g25 in every way. He loves the 410s and said he isn’t giving them back lol. That’s ok because I just picked up a set of minty 714 AP2s.

I do kinda wish I knew what a 410 with a tumble finish would look like, stripped of hydropearl. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

Shot a 79 yesterday in wet conditions with the 410's. Why is that a big deal? It's my first round in 14 years that I've shot under 80. And I had 3 putts that stopped on the edge of the cup. All the Ping G series irons are forgiving but none are like the 410's. Especially if you happen to hit toe shots once in while which is my miss.
