Best shaft profile to promote a draw

Recommended Posts

What is a good shaft to promote a draw.

I have a Kurokage xt but spin gets a little high with it does a ok job with the draw

Also have a tensei pro white and really like the feel of it and the numbers are good but have a tough time turning it over.

My swing speed is 115 and low/low shafts give me the best numbers just looking for something i don’t have to try to hard to turn over, something that my natural swing will do as I hit a draw with every club as it’s my natural shape ..

You will likely have to compromise a bit as for many people, slightly softer shafts are easier to turn over, either in the tip or in the mid section. This might be reinforced by your troubles with the Pro White as it is a very tip/mid stiff shaft. This is very much a feel thing though that will require experimenting on your end. THe Kuro Kage KT is not a high spin shaft so if you have spin problems with it then I would look at strike location as that will play a key component. A slightly softer shaft can help promote a draw but will increase dynamic loft in the process and thus launch and spin. You can either loft down your driver a bit to compensate or fine tune your strike location to keep it higher on the face to reduce spin. The latter will increase your launch will keeping spin under control, the former will flatten out your trajectory a bit.

This is going to be a personal result that you'll get through guessing and testing. There isn't really any way of knowing how you'll react to any given bend profile, if any different at all. The answer is whatever shaft is easiest for you to deliver the club with a closed face angle relative to the club path. It could be as simple as adding loft on your current set up's adapter and not squaring the face at address. Are your current shafts the tx versions?

Instructor isn’t necessary..

Try a stronger grip

Shaft is going to do whatever the operator of the shaft is doing.

Or try a senior or ladies shaft

Sounds like the softer butt profile of the Tensei White is a feel that you react well to, given the KKXT is stiffer in that area. Tensei White should be stiffer mid and tip.

Your next steps could be to go with a profile that is softer mid and stiff tip or softer tip and stiff mid. One of those two things is giving you some difficulties turning over, likely the stiffer tip, but we can’t be sure until you test.

I like a 6.5 hzrdus red as a softer tipped shaft that is pretty stout mid and not too stiff butt. The tipping on this would need to be dialed in. I believe KK XM and Aldila Copperhead have similar softer butt, stiff mid, softer tip profiles.

Something that is soft butt, softer mid, and stiff tip would probably be Diamana DF. Usually softer mid shafts are stiffer butt and tip. Hzrdus yellow would be a good example of this.

Kale_M your really no help ... I’m a scratch player but my knowledge of equipment is growing and trying to pick the brains of the people who are educated on the equipment side

Why ask here then?

Lots of pros have no idea about equipment. So you stating you are a scratch player means squat

I texted out a 8.2 tour head I just received with the Kuro Kage xt 70tx. Tipped a 1” and it’s a beautiful baby draw that finally doesn’t ballon on me. But not solid feeling as the tensei pro white I have. The tensei pro white is dead straight some times, few baby 2 to 3 yard draw but most my misses are cutting out right and driving me nuts. I want the Kuro Kage flight with the tensei feel .... any ideas ....

Can a shaft actually "promote" a draw? Serious question. I play a nice fade generally, but really struggle to turn the ball from right to left. My big miss is a double crossed fade that starts right and keeps going. I've tried several shafts the last few seasons and haven't been able to get it going R to L.

Obviously a swing flaw on my behalf, but since OP is Scratch and searching for the same thing maybe there is a shaft I need to try? I always thought fades/draws were produced by face angle and swing path, but maybe I'm thinking old-school prior to the new ball flight rules from the invention of Trackman?

Based on USGA rules, a shaft must be symmetric in the way it bends and twists, so a shaft can't actually be manufactured to promote a left-right or right-left ball flight.

The only way a shaft can promote one ball flight or the other is if, in your hands, its flex profile is such that the club head is more open or closed at impact than another shaft. Conventional wisdom is that a shaft that has a softer tip will have a little more forward flex at impact, which increases the dynamic loft and closes the face a little bit. So, the starting point would be to try something with a softer tip if you want to hit a draw.

That being said, the change in feel of a shaft might change the way you deliver the club to the ball, which could override any of the effects of the shaft. As an example, if I swing a shaft that is too flexible I tend to hit big slices because the feel is all wrong for me and I'm afraid of releasing the club.

From everything that I've learned, Grochol is correct. A shaft will not be able to turn a fade into a draw. A softer tip section or softer overall profile will tend to enhance the shape that you already hit. Is your shot shape unpredicatable with the shaft setups you currently have, or do you just not prefer the shape you are getting?

My shot shape is a high draw. I already low down my driver loft to 8.5 heads to keep the ball down from falling out the sky. A softer tip sounds like the good idea but now I worry about it ballooning on me. The tensei white great launch and spin but at times it will go straight with a baby cut or some times with a baby draw not a big miss at all but like every golfer i want to know my draw will draw. Like us all I want perfection. If I go softer tip will tipping it a little more then normal help from the ball spinning to much on me? I hit a high draw with every club in my bag as my natural swing.

Tipping it a little bit will help to the same degree that it takes away from the thing that inherently helps the draw, so its a balance. Again, if you're afraid of ballooning then contact is your friend. Keep your strike point above the center and slightly towards the toe and your spin will stay in check.

Exactly... the thing that helps close the face also increases the loft, so you can't tip the shaft in a way that will change one and not the other.
