Mizuno MP-20 - July 2019

Recommended Posts

Just placed my order for 6-pw to combo in with my HMB set. I love the HMBs but am having difficulty with solid contact on the short irons. I think the soles are just too big for my liking. If this experiment fails there will be a lot of like new irons for sale! Haha!

Took almost a month from when I ordered till I got mine. Placed order on 9/20, just picked them up 10/12. According to Mizuno my order was held up because they were out of HMB 4 iron heads. They just got them back in stock last wednesday.

Ordered my 4 iron HMB SEL from my club less than 2 weeks ago. It arrived this afternoon, will pick up tomorrow. It was a custom order.

Β

Yep - I know. I just meant if Mizuno had asked my esteemed opinion before designing them, would I personally have split the set at 5 or 6 iron. I probably would have gone with 6 iron. That said, I found the demo 7 iron to be extremely forgiving, so I’m hoping that translates to the 5 and 6 iron as well.

I see what you are saying. The 5 and 6 are easy to hit. I am happy with the split the way it is. I personally wouldn't have bought if they went down to 6 iron in the HMB SEL, a bit too chunky for me. I can see maybe 5, 4 and 3 in HMB.

I also found the 7 iron at the demo VERY VERY forgiving (like a CB rather than a Blade), thus I decided to order the SELs as well. Although I have used blades in the past as well, but I dont play as often now.

I agree, the 5i has seemed plenty easier to hit compared to some of the blades I've played in the past. I usually split at the 4 or 5 iron... depending on how comfortable I feel with the blade 5. Very happy with this one!

I ordered both the MMCs and the blades and played the MMCs for 2 weeks before even trying the blades. Once I tried them, I knew I could never go back. These are the most gorgeous and easy to hit β€œblades” you can find. 4-PW they’re all fantastic. Tried them on a LM and honestly, no difference in distance yet tighter dispersion. I can’t believe how easy these things are to hit. MMCs heading to eBay I’m afraid. They’re great too but if you can play those, you can play the blades. Just sayin

Same shaft I’ve played for the last 3 years, Modus 120x

Just logged my first range session and round with the SEL. My initial reactions:

Β

-they look amazing and feel amazing

-they are not an intimidating club to look at. Kind of a β€œfake blade” in my opinion.

-they seem to play long and lower spin that I would expect from a blade.

-the HMB 4 iron is very hot and easy to hit

-I think they are no less forgiving than the Apex Pro I am coming from.

Β

All in all, I’d say they’re a really, really good set.

you know, I have always wondered if musclebacks are considered blade irons. What is the general consensus on this? are these blades or not?

Muscle backs are most definitely blades IMO

Played 5 round and a few range sessions with the MP20’s now and they are fantastic. No loss of forgiveness or distance when compared to my older AP2 716’s. If anything the shape and thinner top line is giving me much more confidence and I’m striking the ball better than ever. Even the 4 iron is buttery soft to hit which has really surprised me.

I would definitely agree that MB's are blades, but I can see how some don't perceive them as a true blade compared to the blades from back in the day. But if that is the case then there are no true blades available in today's market. I guess you could say blades have transitioned over time to the muscle back design of more mass low and behind the ball???

Β

that sounds right on, I agree, Just an evolution of the blade iron (like any other club)

Yeah I think MBs have become synonymous with blades but MBs were actually the first GI technology. Yururi still makes JDM β€œflatback” irons in multiple finishes I believe. Kyoei forged.
