Older Driver

I’m looking to game a different driver than the G20 I’m using now. I don’t want to get any of the new super expensive models. Does anyone have any recommendations of an older model With the most foregiveness.

You might just upgrade to the G30 or the G if you’re used to Ping drivers. Should be fairly affordable and plenty forgiving, as all Ping drivers seem to be.

 

This first driver that popped into my head when I read your question was the Titleist 905R from around 2006. I’ve seen several on here mention that they still pull theirs out from time to time. That driver was an oldie but a goodie; although it’s likely not the most forgiving, it is 460cc. I still have a mint 905T (400cc version from 2005) and I will forever love that driver.

Any one made post the introduction of the 450 cc -460 cc head volume would be pretty forgiveful. some will give a little of the distance to forgiveness.

I still have a couple of Adam's driver. The Speedline Tech was a pretty nice one. Not the longest driver I've had but always found it's way back into the golf bag.

They are pretty much the same, as long as you put the right shaft in it.

Callaway, Taylor Made, Adams......... a few stil have the NOS in whole or just heads. Great buy for under $100 complete.

I went from G20 to G400. Prefer the G400.

What kind of price level are we talking? 75? 100? 150? 200? If you go to 200 you can get something very new and nice and shines. But without a price point it’s tough to make a recommendation

I feel the same way about the 905t. Played that for almost 10 years. Only dropped it late.last year

Depends on how much you want to spend. G25, G30, G or G400 would be great upgrades

Callaway XR16 driver played by some pros in 2016.

G 400 is the best yet but the G is a good club. Should be able to pick up either for $200 or less in excellent condition. Both will be a big improvement over the 20.

The callaway xr 16 pro, they can be had for cheap, I i ended up putting a couple different shafts on it, decent club.

An almost new current model Tour Exotics EXS will sell for less than $130. Check out the reviews. FWIW -- 5 or 6 pros on the Senior tour use them.

Callaway BB Fusion, get a good shaft in it and prepare to be dazzled.

Even an F6 would probably fit the bill. Very, very forgiving driver in my experience.

My father-in-law just picked up a new F8 on eBay for ~$100. If you're looking for deals, Cobra is usually the best bang for your buck.

Nice head, but likely a little harder to find in good shape, and wet noodle of a 50g stock shaft.

I just jumped though this hoop with the same thought of trying to buy something from a previous generation and couldn't make it work with trying to find a shaft that fit appropriately. I hit a ton of heads / shaft combos on the trackman to find out what actually worked best for me (current gen stuff) then went to the internets to try to piece something together with a similar shaft and previous gen head but this would have ended up costing as much a new driver. So i just ordered that and haven't looked back. I was really surprised at the performance difference of getting a driver fit versus just buying the stock offering. It also surprised me how much more important the shaft is than the head. All of the new driver heads are about the same so as long as you get a newer giant driver head i think there is probably going to be less than a 5% difference in performance.

The Taylormade 2016 M2 is still a very good driver today. You can find one for $100-ish on the Bay. Search for online reviews. You’ll see that some reviewers prefer the M1 to the current iteration (the 2019 M6), although I personally wouldn’t go that far. But for $400 less, it’s a better deal!
