Most forgiving 3 wood?

Recommended Posts

I’m shopping for a new 3 wood, and I’m not sure which way to go. As funny as it is to admit, the best ball contact I’ve made in a while is the a used ping serene 3 wood, which is a women’s club. Gonna hit some stores tomorrow to see what I find. What are your favorite fairway woods?

*Update*

Well, I ended up getting a Taylor Made M6. I tried every club mentioned in this thread, but I could'nt argue with the data. I was hitting the TM further and straighter than the others. It ended up costing me $300, but I am happy with it.

*Update #2*

I've taken it to the range twice and found that I may not be so wild about it. One thing that I never factored in was that I was swinging the TM toward the end of my fitting, when I was getting fatigued, so I was swinging slower. When I am fresh on the range, I feel like I am getting too much whip with this even flow shaft, and I am hitting the ball rather wildly. I hit another #3 wood today with a shaft that was made for a faster swing, and I liked it much more. I'm afraid I might have a little buyers remorse from not doing enough research before I made the purchase.

If you don't want to spend that much for newer G410 SFT, you could look for a Ping G400 SFT 3 Wood (last year's model).

Callaway Paradym X 3 Wood (+2 degrees)

Does the women's club go shorter than your typical men's club?

The crazy thing is that I can really smoke the ball with that club. I don’t really know the difference between that club and one made for men, the shaft length seems the same. If I see one of those in the used section, I might just buy one. Amazing club.

Gotta give it to Ping G410 SFT as well, not as long as my Epic Flash SZ by any stretch of the imagination but it is VERY forgiving.

I love my TS2 3 wood but currently in the market for a new 5 wood and will likely end up with the G410. Not the SFT as I'm a drawer of the ball but the regular one.

F8, with a half an inch shorter than standard shaft. I used to hate fairway woods but absolutely love the one I have right now. I shortened my driver shaft by 3/4" and that seemed to help as well.

Im pretty sure Fred Couples used a woman's fairway wood for several years

I would suggest... a FW that has 4 on the bottom and lofts out at 16° or 17°.

(_3W_ paired with _forgiving_ is an oxymoron)

Note on TM 3W/HL fairway woods: These have a 43" shaft, same as a 3W. Part of 4W benefit is shorter shaft for more control.

There are many forgiving fairways out there. Ping, Cobra F-Max, Callaway Steelhead XR, etc. One thing to consider is the lie angle. Just like in irons, if the lie angle is too flat or upright, it will effect how well you make contact and well struck shots.

Driver: Callaway Mavrik

3+ Wood: TM 300 Mini

4 Wood: TM Stealth

7 Wood: TM Stealth

Irons: Callaway Ai Smoke (6-AW)
Wedges: Cleveland CBX 4 ZipCore  (54, 58)
Putter: Scotty Cameron Futura 6M

The SFTs are really easy to hit ... they have (I believe) weight added in the heel of the clubhead to help slicers straighten out their ball flight. If you deal with some hooks in your swing, these clubs might not be for you.

I would put a vote in for the Cobra fairways. The most important part is to experiment with shaft weight, length, and flex. The women's fairway noted above is likely shorter length, lighter swing weight and shaft, and softer flex. All good things for a lot of players. Adding loft (5w vs 3w) will decrease side spin and come standard with a shorter shaft length.

Maybe post this "edit" in your first post, OP. Folks won't often read to 20 plus posts before taking the time to chime in.

let's be more specific. a modern 3 wood would range from 13º to 16.5º* in terms of its loft, hence its head size. too much variants/facts to say 'forgiveness' in one word.
