Insertion depth of Ping's w/hosel weights (G410, G700, i500?)

No chance of this. Those weights won't come out. I'm not sure who invented the hosel weight design but I know Tom Wishon was on the leading edge. He added the feature to a lot of Golfsmith/Snake Eye's heads. Later on when Tom started his own company he put a slot in the weight so a screwdriver could be used to crack it loose in the hosel for easier removal. Ping hasn't picked up on that trick yet.

Dang @Nessism this sounds like a chore and a half. I was searching your threads because I remembered a couple months ago you saying you were switching from one of the 3Ms to a loctite and I couldn’t remember which ones, and I stumbled across this thread with this latest update on the Ping issues.
Good luck figuring it all out! Oh, and let us know what you think of the new epoxy with the shafting beads!

To shim or not to shim, that is the question?

A slightly cut down club shim fits nicely over the shaft and into the hosel, greatly tightening up the shaft fit. I've got both the scalloped shaped ferrules and the flat stock Golfworks style shims and both will work. I'm now concern that the shim may not leave enough room for the adhesive. The DP8410 has .010 glass beads in it and there may not be enough room. Gotta perform a trial (as soon as the ferrules arrive.)

The stock steel shafts (XP 95's) fit tighter than the Recoil's so don't think shims are needed there. In a flash of frustration earlier in the week I bought some Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal's so now I've got a decision to make; rebuild the 410's with the Recoil's or reinstall the steel shafts (XP 95's) and off them.

I say stick with the Mizunos, bring the Ping back to stock and move on...if it were me, I know I’d eventually want to try different shafts, so might as well do yourself a favor and save yourself the headache of continually working on the Pings in the future.

...but do keep us posted on how the new glue works when re-assembling.

I just picked up some DP 420 but the black and non sag version. Not working on Ss/Pings so no concerns like you’ve dealt with, but it is new to me. 20 minute work time seems ideal for me and I’ve never used NS before, but like the idea of a less runny epoxy.

Clubs are drying. Threw the Recoil's back in. I hate to give up.

The DP8410NS seems like good stuff. If anyone has worked with DP810 before you would find the characteristics similar. It's goopy. A different consistency than epoxy. Very tenacious. Hard to wipe off the hosel and ferrule for the ooze out. I think it's just the ticket for sticking to the stainless. Fingers crossed anyway.

Oh, and the GolfWorks G410 ferrules are awesome. A perfect fit. They have little ribs on the collar so they space off the hosel perfectly and provide spacing for adhesive fill. For $0.50 each they are a great bargain.

My back has been jacked up for two weeks now so I haven't been able to test the clubs. I'm confident they will be okay this time but...

Going to do some swinging in the yard tomorrow and see how it feels. If it passes the test I'll take the clubs out Sunday.

A little late but one round back and all is well. I'm confident the clubs are fixed...but then I thought that last time.

The Mizuno Hot Metal's are waiting in the on-deck circle should any further issues be noticed. Fingers crossed.

Moral of the story is to never take anything for granted when building clubs, especially these newer Ping's.

@Nessism how are the clubs holding up? Thinking about picking up a used set of G410s to tinker with but don’t want to buy myself a nightmare since I will likely have to reshaft, not many sets of these floating around with anything in a decent x-stiff shaft.

Clubs are good...although they haven't seen much use for the last few weeks so it's a little early to say definitively. I feel pretty confidently that if you follow the steps outlined in this thread you will have a good build.

Just be careful to study insertion depth on a club by club basis and look close when first pulling the shafts. If the set you get is anything like mine there will be plastic spacers down in the hosel on some clubs to normalize insertion depth throughout the set. This is done because the hosel weight can vary from club to club.

A friend brought over his Ping i500 irons for me to reshaft. I agreed, but once I read this thread called him and said I wasn't so sure I wanted to tackle this. Laughingly, he reminded me that I had already reshafted these once before. Looked through my workbook and sure enough, he was correct. They just didn't look like my work . . . the ferrule finishing was much too good, LOL.

 

Anyway, removed the heads and cleaned them up. All were bore depth of 1 1/16", but at the bottom of one is what looks like a small flat washer. What the heck is that?

You can use the same gun but will need a 10:1 plunger.  I've got some spares if you get stuck and can't find one.

The i210s have approx 1 1/8" depth.

The i210's don't have a hosel weight so I assume they are like the older Ping's which require driving the shaft into the hosel in order to get it to bottom.  You should still prep the hosels and shafts very carefully, use quality epoxy, and the proper collared ferrules.  To get the shaft to bottom in the hosel I turn the club upside down, holding the head in one hand and the shaft in another, then pick up the club and slam it down onto a concrete floor shaft butt end down a couple of times to drive the shaft into the hosel.  This works best if the shafts don't have grips installed of course.

I am guessing there is a small section that is exactly .355 the you push the shaft into?   I plan on using Recoils(Shafts I have been playing for 4+ years) wrist injury and then surgery.   I will order some collared ferrules for the i210 from golfworks if I end up buying the i210.
