Electric Walking Cart Recommendation

Fit 60-year-old residing on a Pete dye design with a fair number of elevation changes. Please recommend an electric walking cart. I have picked up some manufacturer names from other posts and from players at our course (who use Alphard) but would like recommendations from wrx golfers with carts.

 

Also, do you recommend new or used? Quality is more important than price, although I certainly have no need to throw away money unnecessarily

Sorry, I have no helpful recommendations for you as to the cart, but there is a separate category called "Golf Bags/Carts/Headcovers". You might get better responses if asked in there?

I have the Bag Boy Navigator. Both it and it's brother, the MGI Navigator are excellent. The quad gyro technology along with the stability of the trolleys make them superior IMO.

I have a Motocaddy M1 DHC. It is by far the best money I've ever spent on golf. By far.

I have a Hillbilly USA for the last 5 years. I think it’s still about $600. I’m in Massachusetts with hills And play about 100 times a year. This has no problem going up the hills. You have to hold on to it so it doesn’t go crooked or fall backward on a steep hill but requires no effort. I think there are 5 people at my club who have them and are completely satisfied after several years. I got a lithium battery and am still on the first one. People with the other battery have had to replace at least once.

I bought a used LectronicCaddy for $300. I made a rear hill wheel for it. I can go up steep slopes without a problem. The battery will go 36 holes per charge but I trickle charge it all the time between rounds. Customer service has been excellent when I replaced a part or two. The remote is good from over 200 yards.

For the past 2 1/2 years I've used the eWheels with a Clic Gear 3.5+ with great success on a very hilly golf course. A new version is coming out that will be faster/have more torque and have a "follow" feature as I understand it. I have had a few in the past, a Bag Boy Navigator, Bat Caddy X4 and am currently using an Alphard Ewheels with a Clicgear Rovic R1S cart. I didn’t really like the non-remote X4 and liked the other two a lot. I would still be using the Bag Boy, but the front wheel ended up breaking. I am very happy with the Alphard Ewheels and it feels a little like the Bagboy with the rotating front wheel on the cart. I think I paid something around $800 for both the cart and the Ewheels so a much better price than a new Navigator.

I currently use a CartTek GRi-1500Li model, and it does a great job for me on some rather hilly courses.

I replaced my Cart Tek with the QOD. Nothing wrong with the Cart Tek except it was getting quite cumbersome getting it in and out of the car and setting up. The QOD is extremely easy with everything. A little expensive for sure...but the convenience and Lith Ion battery was worth it to me.

I'm another one with the QOD. Two years in, its still working perfectly.It doesn't have a remote control or any "follow" capability, you have to steer it yourself, but when I used my wife's CartTek I found the remote to be a distraction. I really like the QOD for its size, it folds up and fits in my trunk great.

Just updating .... thanks to all for the recommendations .... purchased the MGI Zip Navigator AT through Costco .... it works great .... actually strongly prefer using the remote ... i send Zippy down the fairway in front of me while I stroll ... and really nifty to remote when I miss a green left and then exit to the next tee if right as i just grab my wedge and putter and head left to my ball while i remote Zipppy to the right to wait for me when hole is done

I bought a used kangaroo non remote version, and a replacement GEL battery at the beginning of the 2019 golf season.

Used almost exclusively on a hilly fairly rough course. As long as I can still play golf while walking the course, I can't see myself not using an electric trolly.

The pros

It is heavy and durable. Another electric cart user at my home course had their frame break. The weight is an advantage when you have an umbrella mounted to it and there is any wind.

It is made in the USA and parts are readily available. The only items that I bought were the scorecard holder and umbrella holder.

Cons:

The weight is probably around 75 lbs. total. The battery is the heaviest component at around 25-30 lbs. You also have a front wheel assembly, handle bar, and rear wheel assembly.

It disassembles into the 4 components to make lifting bearable, but in total it takes up more space than some that fold up into about the same space as a clicgear push cart.

 

Other considerations:

I didn't feel a need for a remote, but in hindsight I wish I had one. The motor produces a whirling noise that makes it harder to hear conversations.

Lithium batteries last longer and weigh less than an acid based GEL battery. But, when it comes time for replacement lithium is much more expensive. Lithium batteries are easier to lift, but a heavier battery would add more stability to a cart.

I have the MGI Navigator and it is the best investment I have made. The cart is awesome and not heavy like the previous poster commented on his particular cart. I believe the big difference in electric cart prices is the battery. The more it costs the lighter, better the battery is.

For those debating whether to get a remote or not I say do it. The remote is easy to use and allows you to send the cart forward to the next tee, etc. when you want. If for some reason you hate the remote you have the option to not use it.

Are motocaddy or Powacaddy not a thing stateside? I don't use one normally but play on a pretty hilly course and have used one of the new Motocaddy M3's a few times. Great trolly and they fold down pretty compact for storage or for transporting in your car if you need to...

One thing to consider if its a pretty hilly course is a trolly that has some sort of downhill control as this will help stress the motor less and give some longevity.

I haven't noticed many Motocaddy or Powakaddy trolleys here in the N.W. part of the country. Bat Caddy and Cart Tek mostly although MGI is making a strong move thanks to Costco.

Another vote for the MGI Navigator. My home course is very hilly and it's nice to have fresh legs at the end of the round.

-Easy to fold up/unfold (way easier than my Clicgear and no pinched fingers)

-Easy to control with the remote or without

-Stable - no issues with tipping over

I have a Kangaroo Z Series. It is a remote with a lithium battery. It's heavy, a pain to put together and take apart. My bag, regardless of type, shifts. It's had a few things go wrong, including the first battery not lasting 18 holes. The customer service has been fantastic, but when you pay this much, these problems shouldn't happen. If I had to do it again, I probably would get a Cart Tek.

I just used a Powacaddy FW5s for the first time and have these observations;

Pros:

Plenty of powervery stabletracks nicelyfolds up compact

Cons:

The "speed control knob" does not control speed. It controls power. So a setting of 4 is fine for flat areas, but it will run away from you downhill and then you need to change to a 5 for uphill.I was constantly adjusting the "speed control knob" because my courses are quite hilly with very few flat fairways.Downhill on a cartpath was a big struggle even with power off.It may be that my courses are too hilly for any electric trolley.If I ever buy one it will be with a remote control or "follow me" function and a mechism to slow the unit when going down a steep hill.

I have a GoKart with the Automatic speed control and I love it. Not sure they are available in the states though.

How long have you owned you GoKart and is it the first generation or the new MK2? Also how does the automatic speed control work? Can you vary the speed much with it and when you take your hand off does it just stay at that speed until you touch it again?

We have a pretty good cross representation of different electric carts at our club, which has its share of hills and moguls. Bat Caddy's have not held up at all and most of the guys who owned them dumped them pretty quickly. Cart Tek has become popular and see to be a little better built and more reliable. But the two that seem to stand out are the Stewart and even more so, the Kangaroo. They are both at the top end of the price range, so they are not as popular. But the Stewart is very well built. The Kangaroo is built like a tank. It is all steel and there isn't much to break. And it is very stable on uneven surfaces more-so than any cart I seen yet. But the price........

I've had my GoKart for about 5 months. It's the new MK2. The speed control works great. When I take my hand off it stays at the speed I was walking when I took my hand off until I touch it again. The speed varies quite a bit it does a great job going the same speed your walking. I am very impressed and happy with it.

Can anyone say which brand has the type where you wear a controller on your belt and the cart follows you wherever you go?

Stewart and Caddytrek are the two I have heard of, no actual experience with either one. From what I have read, the Stewart performs much better with simpler controls when switching from follow to remote etc.
