I have the golf digest with his WITB lying around somewhere. Thankfully I think I’ve committed this one to memory. If I’m wrong, it’s not going to be by much, if at all.

His irons that he won with were definitely a mystery to me.  Before this thread I always thought he used some sort of 962 prototypes.  Boy was I wrong.

There was quite a ruckus on GEA back in the day about these sticks.  Especially discussing Titleist's public statements about the impossibility of forging their iron designs, which was their defense of their casting of the 962/981 irons...  LOL

That whole idiotic stance they took was one of the things that turned me off Titleist and I have never warmed up to them. Matt Pavin tried to be the good soldier for them about it but I think it hurt his credibility a bit. What happened to him I wonder?

I've hit several Titleist irons and they always feel super harsh to me. Never have understood the appeal, except as some kind of status symbol.

I felt a little badly about my distaste for Titleist because Matt was a good dude.  Not enough to start liking them, LOL.

Took a shot at Google, looks like he was with Titleist thru 2015, did a short stint consulting, then took a job organizing group and corporate golf events.  Was furloughed in pandemic response, doesn't appear to have gone back to work for them.

I totally agree with this as it applies to their players irons. Not a fan. They look nice though.

If you thought they were harsh you wasn't finding the sweet spot. It was tough to find on some models.

The 712 range was my favourite. Had the CB and the AP2's and they both felt great. Each to their own though. Gaming z785's now and loving them!

Same.  Matt was a great resource, but Titleist "behavior" cultivated my feelings that they are the Judge Smales of the golf world.

I still always wanted a 15* 970F fairway wood...they could have sold a million of those but they gave us the POS 975f and the unhittable 12.5* model.

I certainly do not find the sweet spot every time but I hope I hit it once in awhile!

I play mizunos now and I think most would say they have a softer feel than titleist, but to each his own.

Exactly!! This was an era though that almost everything on tour was night and day different than what we could get at retail. Titleist was the worst in that area though. I’ve never even given their clubs a chance based on the Kmart models they brought to retail back then.

I remember their motto "serious clubs for serious golfers"...I always sort of had a F off attitude towards titleist because of how they were then.  To this day I have a hard time even considering a titleist club.

I have hit a few, and was never very impressed. I would not go as far as to say harsh, but my Wilson Staffs, Hogans, and Mizunos all felt better as well as my buddy’s Yonex blades.

I’m far from a Titleist hater, I’ve played Titleist woods from 2005 to 2015 and recently owned a set of 716TMB, I also think the U500 is the best driving iron I’ve ever hit.

I believe their best products are their  cavity backs. I’ve never been one to anticipate the next Titleist Blade coming out, but I always found their cavity backs to be better than most.

I remember going into a shop, seeing a Cameron Pro Platinum.  Hit a lot of putts with it.  Yep, nice.  Grabbed a TP Mills, hit some putts with it.  Yep, feels a lot better.  OK, a bit of hype.

Then there's the old line about the Cameron Anser styles being with better materials and processes.  OK, give them that, Karsten Solheim was using firmer metals, and casting.  Then they started copying TP Mills and Tad Moore, who were already using carbon steels, milling their stuff.

Yeah, its just a lot of empty hype.

The litigation-bullying of smaller DTC brands is icing on the crap cake, considering the origins of the Pro V (coughIPtheftcough).

Yeah.  🙄

memory lane, I remember the "too complex to forge" comment about forged 990's lol.  There was also a poster who would reply with "Titleist Kool Aid" several times a day.  I was anti Titleist for a few years until my Tour Issue hate of Taylor Made took over.  I cringe a bit thinking I felt that way🤪

Yep...the TM300 tour "holy grail" started my hate of TM as well.

Come to think of it...that is when I started mocking snd ridiculing Bombsquad and BigHittter Todd or whatever his name was.
