Leather Grips? Who is using and what do you think

FWIW Best Grips suggests wiping down the grips weekly with a damp towel and once a month some rubbing alcohol on a towel.

I ordered a couple Micro Perf to try. My biggest concern is the seam, I don't like ribs in my grips but sounds like its not that noticeable. Going to try them against he GripMasters wrap I ordered

Good luck on the grip trials. I was concerned with the rib as well but it isn't that bad. I do notice them but barely. The rib doesn't affect my ability to open/close the club to produce the intended shot. The only issue I would have is with any club with an adjustable hosel (driver, fairway woods, hybrids). I found the optimum setting for my TM M3 and TM 2I Hybrid and then installed my BG Augusta Microperf to that. Have fun with the testing and looking forward to your report on them.

put best grips microperfs on all my clubs a few weeks ago (brown with augusta on putter). everyone who's touched them has asked where to buy.

 

i bought them for the shock absorption and have been super happy. lots of relief on my hands and wrists, tacky, feel awesome. excited about the aging process with them.

 

installed them myself with two-sided tape and lighter fluid. hit the shaft with WD-40 before sliding on to help just to be safe b/c i didn't want to order another grip.

This x 1000! A drop or 2 of soap in an old time mustard squirt bottle filled with water, douse the painters tape, squirt a little in the grip master grip, and use a tire inflate. Easy on, easy off.

 

Biggest issue I see after a little over a year - the rubber underlisting where it wraps over the butt and down at the shaft are wearing out way faster than the grips. Probably from getting jammed in my walking bag... But I'm never going back to rubber grips. SC humidity used to be a problem, but not with the leather grips.

I was also interested in this and asked Best Grips about this, Zach responded very quickly and here is his response:

"Harry liked to use it for installs where you're trying to achieve the smallest size possible. I put 2 wraps of painters tape on mine and blow them on, no solvent, no glue, no issues. Just make sure you're keeping all the shafts built up to the same size. 2 wraps on a .610 and 2 wraps on a .600 will give you different sizes. "

I have been using exclusively Gripmasters for over 10 years, mostly the Wrap. I wont use anything else again. They are brilliant in hot and humid conditions, where i mostly play. For all my life playing golf I would have to wet/wipe my hands constantly, never had to do it once since... as it turns out thats the complacency that wears out tack. Sweat is the enemy, but really, thats the same for all grips.

I have spoken to the founder/inventor at length about the grips. He personally wipes with a wet towel after each shot. That would be a good habit to get into, if we want them to last longer.

I havent ever replaced any except when replacing the club. The oldest one I have is almost 10 years. Probably has about 10% tack in it, but only for about 1 minute after I wet wipe it, but its not slippery either. The cap is stuffed though, can almost see through it. I got some electrical heat shrink and 'recapped' it, and thats fine. If it comes off again, I will do it again, its like 2c of materials. I will replace it when the leather falls off.

I dont install them myself, but the guys i use for that blow them off and on no troubles at all. I dont use any tape.

USA Gripmaster 10 years ago had listed for sale a bottle of grip stuff to rejuvenate the grips tackiness Not surprising they dont sell it anymore, but wish I knew what was in it.

wiped down the grips with warm water and tiny drop of dawn soap.... let them sit about a minute and dried with a new towel. I could immediately feel the tackiness on the grips with the towel getting stuck to them. Holding the grip they felt entirely different and tacky right away

 

a few hours later I grabbed them again but they didnt feel as tacky anymore. Still felt better and nowhere near as slippery like I previously said..... should I try a wipe down again? Im playing 18 tomorrow so I should get a better feeling for them. I main thing is I want to make sure I can play without a glove bc I never use one. Immediately after wipe down I dont think I would have needed a glove, but after hours they sat around I felt I would need a glove

I would give them a good wipe down with a wet towel just before leaving to play. As mentioned by others, they get better as you use them.

Have the Best Grips micro perf and the Gripmaster wrap installed. After early testing I prefer the Best Grips slightly but that’s just after a driving range session. Going out to play today and will get a better idea today

Possibly cleans the excess "sticky" off? I've noticed now that I'm getting in some range sessions they will have sticky residue on them that you can almost pull or roll off. Maybe because mine are still new.

I play the GripMaster Roo and now discontinued Club Maker's Stitchbacks. I also have played the Kidd's, Classic Wraps, and Master Swingers. All are great leather grips but the Roo is the absolute best if I have to nitpick. GripMasters are expensive initial cost but their quality is top notch and they last longer than any rubber grip making them cheaper in the long run. Rubber is simply going to erode with friction and get brittle over time and with exposure to UV light from the sun. To me it is a cheaper up front cost but other than that leather is the better grip.

They are fantastic. The Master Grips I had were tacky as all get out. Especially in the rain. Looked great, too.

Took the plunge last night, ordered GripMaster Roo grips, will be going with them for a full set of irons, as well as wedges. Ordered enough to cover driver and 3w, but need to figure out which driver and 3w.

The original plan was to finish the MP37s, with the two wedges I carry with them. Playing my Rams with Super Peening Blues has me thinking about two things; finishing my reshaft project for one of my Golden Ram sets (possibly using Super Peening Blues or Modus3 125), or regripping my Rams that already have SPB with the Roos in transit.

The problem with the latter is the current SPB are Xstiff, not sure how much longer I can use those, at age 56. And because I still can, I'm unwilling to dump those shafts now. That could change in a few minutes. LOL

Too many options.

Id say the Dawn had something to do with it. I jacked my GM putter grip using soap, it discolored the leather permanently and took the tack off. Still works fine as its just a putter grip, but Id imagine that may be your culprit.

On the website Best Grips advises: ProTack Infused Grips: For MicroPerf and Classic Leather Grips, remember to never use leather conditioner or SOAP on the leather. The chemicals will counteract the ProTack in the leather

I tried it bc the grips were extremely slippery with no glove. They got gripped in late march but ive never had a chance to swing them.... when I finally received my mat and net I tried them and couldn't hold on to the clubs.

 

Played 1 round and it was the same thing. I used a glove and was sticky butt without a glove I feel like im going to launch the club. Not really sure anymore, im at the point I plan on selling the whole set up since theyre brand new clubs with 2 total rounds

Been using either Gripmaster or Best Grips for years now...currently settled on the Gripmaster Roos and couldn't be happier. Best feeling leather I've ever used, soft and tacky. They last forever and are very easy to blow on and off with a little practice. They also last a very long time so the cost is reasonable, especially if you use air to install.

I have been trying to find a grip that would not cause a reaction on my hands (some sort of allergy). Was thinking of going Iomic but after reading all your comments, I am headed Best Grips direction.

I am leaning more towards the Roo simply because I have slightly smaller hands.

I wet half of my towel before the round starts then just give them a quick wipe when they don’t feel sticky enough. When I first got mine I had to do this almost every shot, 1 1/2 years later I rarely have to.

OK guys I haven't commented on here in a while, but I did get my leather grips and here is what I found so far. 

I am torn still. I like the round aspect of the wrap but after a range session I could feel the wrap being folded back under the thumb. I really like the Best grips but not crazy about the stitching. I have always used round grips so the stitching is a different feeling to me! Still doing some testing, would love a round grip with no stitching but don't think that exists. I do like the Best Grip better than the Grip Master wrap, but I also haven't tried a Grip Master with the stitching. So basically I am still testing, the tackiness does take getting used to but I don't mind that, the club is definitely more secure in my hands because of that.
