Is anyone else still playing the CF16 irons?

 

Recently got a new set on a wicked hawt deal from CPO .... and colour me impressed.  Love the satin and the strong lofts in mid irons.  Great feel and even better feel with Recoils as well

 

To me they are so much softer than the XR pro's.

I play a tour issue set of the Apex Pro 16. Can’t get them out of the bag. Really great set of irons. I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

I have my backup set 5-AW with the factory XP95 that I am going to shaft up for next winter as I just would like a little more out of my clubs in the colder wetter months, not saying that the Pros are not great in winter, just looking for an excuse to do a bit of WRXing for the winter lol.

I still have a set of 5-PW with recoil shafts that I purchased from CPO last Summer. I’ve tested different irons but can’t find anything that compares, especially for the price. They might not be the most forgiving but have a great feel on centered strikes.

I have a set I occasionally play with. Also bought mine new about a year ago on CPO. I enjoy playing with them but day in day out I needed a little more forgiving club. Not getting rid of the c16's tho.

Around the greens they have few equals. They are amazing clubs for chipping. I am playing Ping 700's right now, but they feel clunky around the greens, nothing like the CF16. The CF16 9 iron is the best chipping club I have ever used.

When i upgraded my irons last winter it was between the Apex cf16's and the Rogue Pro's. Both were like-new condition with Recoil shafts and loved softer feel of the cf16's but went with Rogue Pro's in the end because honestly...got them for a better price. And no complaints now but did like them.

Been mostly in the bag for the last two years. Good all around club. Feels nice, looks nice, forgiving enough. Would I replace em?  Sure. But it’ll have to be something really good.

They feel much better with recoil proto 95 (f4) in them vs XP95 x100's

 

The PROTO shafts are black which I really enjoy having play Onyx TI s400 shafts in wedges for a long time

 

I have also put a black AD DI 85x driving iron shaft in the 5 iron and it feels AWESOME

 

A few more rounds will give me more info.  I will say they like to produce STRAIGHT flighted laser beams

Started optimizing set last night with the fitter as two clubs are not producing the right numbers in the wind.   Had the 9i at 156 carry, will do rest over next few days

 

These look really good with the black recoil proto's and white ferrules

 

The recoil proto shafts are much straighter for my action than stock recoil 95's

 

I'm learning that I've been playing my clubs too flat

 

Conversely, long and heavy swingweight = moolah .. ymmv

I just got out of the Apex's.  I really liked them.  They feel great if you flush them.  I did have an issue with the cup face cracking on my 9 iron which is what caused me to switch.

I have a set of them still, from when they were first released. They were great when I wasn't playing a whole bunch, but now they're a bit clunky for me and I have some trouble working left to right (right handed golfer), and occasionally I miss them left (offset issue for me). They feel great, and they're very forgiving otherwise.

you cracked a face?? wow you must really lay it on, nice!

what did you replace them with?

 

CF stops at 7i btw.

I still use the AW and SW.  They’re terrific and have no plans on changing them soon.

My only worry looking online is how beat up the used sets look, maybe very soft heads and poor wearability ?

Yes, these are my gamers. Picked up a set (5-SW) a few years ago from CPO, as well. They were like new, and have weathered well, with only some bag chatter and a few scratches here and there. The heads are fairly soft, so nothing unexpected, and the Recoil 760's are sweeeet.

 

I think the combination of forgiveness and workability strikes the perfect balance for me, and the feel of a well-struck ball is so nice. But even off-center hits hold their line well, and travel almost as far. 

 

No doubt, best irons I've ever played.

I bought the Apex 16's & although I loved the look of them I could not play them well at all. I reluctantly sold them & went back to my XR's. When the 19's were released I though I would give the Apex line another chance...Been my gamers ever since.

I’m still playing these and have no intent on changing. I may pickup a second set to have on hand for when these wear out.

I love my CF16's but have had the itch lately. I bought a used 7 iron from CPO with a Recoil 110 f4 to test out and can't wait to give it a try. @cardoustie I assume you had those Protos put in correct? Did they/you have to shim to install? If I like the tester 7 iron I'm tempted to reshaft my set to keep from buying a new set I won't hit as well.

Had my fitter put them in yes, glass beads, no shims

 

i have the Recoil 110 in blueprints and 4 ping wedges ... great iron shafts as well

Wow cardoustie youre striping that 7 iron. I think you found a gem!

 

Also about wear, am I the only one who loves the look of beatup irons. Nothing else in the bag just irons. It just looks cool!
