Dr says I can go back to steel shafts.

Long story short as can be. Have STT arthritis. Went to graphite shafts several years ago to help with that issue. Then, broke my wrist last August and had to have surgery on the wrist. It was not related to the STT issue and they did not repair that. But, I went through 5 months of therapy on the wrist and have been playing again for two months now.  Had my last visit and the surgeon and I spoke about golf and got his opinion and asked about steel shafts and he is obviously aware of my STT issue as well. He said, sure go for it if you want to go back to steel. The wrist feels pretty good now, but I will say graphite did help. But, I love the feel of steel better. He said first change grips, go to a lighter weight steel shaft/head if possible, and try to not to hit severe divots. But, he said he would not hesitate to use steel in my condition. He said graphite is fine but to him that would be last after going to jumbo grips.

I want to but, I don't want to irritate that STT issue.   Do yoiu thing going to a jumbo grip like a CP2 or Winn excel would be enough with the steel shaft?

Went to graphite 20 years ago and wouldn't go back.  I've tried a couple of times and each time I pulled them after a couple of rounds (last attempt was 8 years ago and will be the last).

Granted it's been awhile since I took med school classes and my clinical training, but I just don't recall any instruction on golf shafts. I did check the Physician's Desk Reference under G and S, but couldn't find anything there either.

I asked his opinion based on my injury.

@MonteScheinblum Offered up an excellent suggestion, Steelfiber.   Consider i95cw, they cost around $50+ ea + install. There are solid reasons why they are popular on all tours.  They feel and play like steel but offer the benefits of graphite.  It's good your MD is familiar with your condition and how it may or may not be affected by the type of shaft.  I have 3 buddies that are MD's, one is my orthopedic surgeon.  One plays steel, the other two play graphite.

I cope with osteoarthritis in my hands, hips and knees and played PX 6.0 and 5.5 for eighteen years.  Good graphite shafts do make a difference.  I went with different graphite shafts, and won't bother you as to why.  Anyway, have GP CP2 Pro grips + 3 on Driver, wood and LW, but for feel.  They do nothing much for my arthritis.

Compared to some of the newer graphite iron offerings (Fuji, MRC, and even the KBS) they are starting to look more reasonably priced.  😖

Investing in a good graphite shaft is far less expensive than more doctors appointments and less painful.

This right here.

I did try some Nippon Zelos shafts in a set I had for a bit, they weren't bad at all on my tennis elbow but I still prefer graphite for their feel & performance along with how my elbow and wrists get along with them.

The difference in price may have some effect on the quality of the fit and therefore the ball flight results but a $25 graphite iron shaft will keep you away from the doctors just as easily as a $75 one.

Your swing speed plays a role as well as shaft flex, but inexpensive graphite shafts are likely to have greater dispersion.

It's all about fit.   I got my best results with $25-$30 vs-proto 100 iron shafts.  Dispersion was actually worse with the SF i95's because they were a bit too firm for me.   For someone else it might be the complete opposite.

But higher swing speeds do tend to more frequently fit into the heavier and stiffer options and those do tend to me more expensive (although there are always exceptions to that as well).

Agree but i never said it wouldn't.  But going cheap on graphite iron shafts is a bad idea if you want the performance of steel.

did i say otherwise?

Whether you meant to or not I can't say.  The use of the qualifier "good graphite shaft" left the meaning unclear based on the fact that it can be interpreted in a lot of different ways by readers.  So I figured some additional clarification might be helpful for the many readers who tend to equate the term "good" with "expensive".

As true as that is, I would venture a guess, most people don't spend the money on fitting.  Many of my friends have not been fit.  They essentially walk into the LGS, see, listen and buy and walk out with stock OEM no-upcharge graphite shafted irons.  They pay a price too, it's comes in the form of rather wild dispersion at times.  Yep, the more someone doesn't want much noticeable difference transitioning from steel to graphite the more it costs.

My first set of stock graphite shafts worked great so I had little troubles transitioning.  95 gm made for TM by fuji but that was before the trend for super light and super soft graphite being used as stock offerings.   My second set of stock graphite's was a disaster.  80 - 85 gm TFC's from Ping that were way too soft for my swing.  I struggled for almost 2 years before I decided to ignoring what everyone was telling me and finally believing that the shaft really was the problem.

That was what drove me to come here.  I spent time reading and learned what I had to do to fit myself.  Things have been much better since then.

What you said is similar to what happened to me.  Especially people telling me this and that, and eventually ignoring them and going off on my own to learn.  Many years back when I first took up the game I had a chance to be a private investor in what became a graphite shaft company; knowing the founders I got a good education on quality graphite.  Then tour graphite iron shafts were as costly as the ones I am playing today.

Eventually, for a reason I don't recall, I moved to X100.  After years with weight sorting issues, switched to custom Rifle 6.5 till 2006 when I bought new clubs with PX 6.0 which I played until 2019.  That's when I bought 620 series, had SF i95cw "S" installed, pulled then i110cw "S", until last year when I went back to PX 5.5, until my current graphite shafts.

It's been a great learning experience but costly to get to my comfort zone today.  Not a route most people can or should follow, but educational and fun.

I wouldn't go back to steel if they were free. I just wish Aldila would reintroduce the RiIP Tour 115. I'd buy 10 set of irons shafts the first day.

I wish they'd come out with any CW iron shaft.   The Rogue Tour iron shafts looked promising but I think got dumped after the MRC buy out for some reason.
