Bumping up an old thread that I’d followed even though I hadn’t yet tried Srixon irons.

I’m a convert. The sole is incredible for my swing. I’m steep, 6-ish degrees down with a 7 iron, and the way these get through the turf is pretty much perfect.

I’d spent most of this season trying to make the switch to Steelfiber i110s in my JPX 921 SEL. It was time to admit it just wasn’t working, and I need to stick with slightly heavier shafts. So with Discount Dan’s recent sale and their great prices on Srixon stuff that’s nearing replacement, I went with this combo set with Modus 120X:

5 iron — ZX4 (23*)

6, 7 irons — ZX5 (27*, 31*)

8, 9, PW — ZX7 (36*, 41*, 46*)

Loving them so far. And loving that combo set-up — every iron in the bag is so easy to hit, and the gaps are meaningful, no bunching at the long end.

I play this exact combo set myself (different shaft). I have had these in the bag for almost a year. Great clubs. The biggest surprise was the ZX4 5 iron. This is my favorite club of the set. Easy to flight, work both ways and great off the turf or tee.

For those who initially bought a full set of ZX5 irons or ZX7 irons then decided to make a ZX5/7 combo set:

1) What was the reason for changing to the combo set?

2) Where in the irons did you make the split from ZX5 to ZX7 (ZX5 6/ZX7 7 or ZX5 7/ZX7 8 etc.,)

3) If you were unable to return your full set and ended buying the addition irons to make the combo set what did you do with the duplicate irons from your previous set that you are not using?

That didn't last long.  In the past 2 months I've seen you say you had a set of JPX923 HMP and now you have Pings.  You change your clubs more than many change their underwear!

@Begbie I haven't done this but I will answer your questions:

1) Some people like having more forgiveness somewhere and something easier to work lower down.  A lot of pros do this as well.

2) The split tends to be the 6i or 7i most often.

3) Sell them individually or hold onto them and sell them as a package deal at the end later on with additional clubs.  Nothing else you really can do.

Went from full ZX7 to combo with break at 6 iron. So 4-6 ZX5 and 7-PW ZX7. For me was forgiveness and the ability to hit the ZX5 higher. Beyond that no other reasons at all. Same shaft in all heads LA Golf 105.

Same split here. Liked the idea of higher launch in 4-6 with ZX5. That being said, I have benched the 4i for a 4H as the gapping with the 5i was blurred. May bend the 4i 1-2 degrees strong and see what happens.

I went Zx5 4-6 stock loft ZX7 7-pw 1 strong. Zx5 launch it nice and high and are extremely forgiving. Zx7 thinner soles in the short irons help me get through the turf better. Great combo set

Originally 6 and 7 iron were ZX5 and 8-GW were ZX7.  Now full ZX5.  ZX7 feels slightly better but is about 5-7yds shorter.  ZX5 went higher and slightly longer for me.  Decided to try and make golf set "easier" instead of "sexier".

I put my 8-GW ZX7's in my Sunday bag (Driver, 5hybrid, 8-GW, 54* and putter).

These irons continue to impress me....  I have a ZX5 4i and the rest ZX7.  Srixon has always been my bar when it comes to irons really and I have not found anything yet that tops these.  The 223 Pros were close but after coming back to the Srixons, there is no question for me they are still king.

I love that the long irons are easy...  And the ZX5 4i really gets up in the air and flies without the fear of hitting a long iron.  The ZX7 5i is surprisingly easy to hit as well, but I do like the 4 slightly better for it's height.  I've got my eye on the i230s but wondering if it's even worth the change.

After a frustrating round with my ZX5 6i for the last few rounds, I went ahead and ordered the ZX7 5i and 6i. I’ve been working on my swing and low point specifically and ever since the chunkier irons have given me some grief. I’ll report back if there’s any difference or improvement in case anyone wants to know
