So project x flexes are slightly stiff to flex, but they call it:

5.5- regular

6.0- stiff

IMO 5.5 is stiff and 6.0 is stiff+ but you should test them

out

as far as the mavrik fairway goes it’s a great  club

As to flex, I thought Callaway classified the Mavrik in the riptide as Light, Regular and Stiff.

I demoed the Mavrik 5 wood in Riptide 60 R flex and it got up in the air easily.

As to 5.0, 5.5 and 6.0, I think of 5.0 as a soft regular flex, 5.5 a regular and 6.0 as stiff. As to 5.0 or 5.5, depends on tempo and speed.

I've played the Mavrik Max 3-fairway for a 1-1/2 seasons now and love it.  I reshafted this year to a Tensei Blue 70g and it is even better.  It is forgiving as anything out there and long enough for my needs.

Been playing Mavrik Subzero 3 wood for last two months or so, and I love this thing... never been this confident about hitting a fairway wood and found new ways of playing some holes with this in my bag. I have Aldila Rogue 130MSI 70g stiff flex shaft on it.

FWIW, you need to look at how the different project X lines differ in terms of “stiffness”. It also depends on how you load the shaft. The evenflow series is easier to load IMO. The HZRDUS line feels stiffer than the Evenflow line for. Most of the people I’ve talked to. I would say it’s reasonable to assign

5.0 - R

5.5 - S

6.0 - S+
6.5 - X

6.5TX - X +

for the HZRDUS line where as evenflow tends to play truer to its number.

just my experience in various fittings. Played a T1100 Evenflow white in my driver for a while before I stepped up to a PVD Hulk in TX.

Mavrik 3 wood is the real deal. Great off the deck and tee. Forgiving and long. Love the Riptide shaft. Only Callaway club I play. I use the 6.0 while playing regular flex in irons FWIW. I am considering dropping a hybrid and going 13 degree and a 5 wood with the Mavrik. Just thinkin'.

As the poster above me said. I have the Rogue white in my 4 wood which I like a lot. Unless I'm just having a bad day with long clubs in general the Mavrik 4 wood is probably my favorite club in the bag right now. As long as I put at least a semi decent swing on it and hit the face, the ball will go mostly where I was aiming. Obviously, out of the center is best haha.

I have it with rogue white (70s). not sure the profile of rogue white but it feels very smooth almost like a regular shaft. To me, it doesn't have any unique characteristics and that's why I like it. everything is somewhere in the middle.

I suspect Callaway doesn't tip these Aldila fairway shafts to spec, so they play loose in stock form.  I had this issue with my 5Deeps (X2Hot) with Tour Green 75S shafts.  Pulled them and chopped an inch off the tip, then they felt great (normal).

I was shocked, but not surprised, how loose the Rogue White felt in my 4-wood.  Also comes in long length (43.25") from the factory.

I just picked up a Mavrik 3 wood from CPO and am really impressed.  It came with the Riptide 60g in 6.0 flex.  I believe the 6.0 plays to the stiff flex. I think PX number system for woods and irons are different.  If you went to PX iron shafts the 5.5 would be between a regular and a stiff and the 6.0 would be a firmer feeling stiff.  In woods, the 5.5 is more like a standard regular and a 6.0 being a stiff.  At least that how they play for me in terms of feel.

I replaced my X2 Hot 3 wood with the Mavrik.  In X2 Hot I had the Aldila Tour Blue shaft in stiff.  The Tour Blue is a really nice and inexpensive fairway wood shaft in my opinion.  By the way the X2 Hot is an awesome fairway wood.

Standard MAV 3W is left biased.  Lack of adjustability sent it to 2nd Swing.  Very forgiving, very nice feel....unfortunately also very left ball flight....

I went from a standard rogue 4w to the SZ Mav 4w. SZ sits a bit more open to my eye and I like the full white score lines on the face.

All 3 Mavrik heads have their pros and cons so best to fit into what best suits you, but I find the Mav a good follow up to the Rogue. I am fine with bonded FW woods and hybrids they have their benefits as well though I understand its a bit harder to play musical shafts 🙂 I put in my IZ FW shaft, and moved the MSI 130 into the Rogue.

Interested reading this.  I have an original EPIC 3 wood with the loft turned up.  Now the new EPIC is out I am tempted to see if I can get a MAVRIK 4 wood with a price reduction.

Always been a fan of the 4 wood and other than the 3 HL M2 I have always had success with the Callaway versions going all the way back to the Steelhead III (my wife still has her ladies shaft version of that club!).

I know this is an old post...just reviving it. Anyone still playing their Mavrik?

Still a bunch in bags on tour especially in fairway woods. It was an amazing fairway.

I'm using the TC Max 3 wood still. My wife loves her two 5/7w combo but I just built her an Epic Max combo to see if she wants to move on (she prob wont and will yell at me for trying to get her new clubs).

Standard 5w still in my collection. I traded my 7w in for a rogue ST not because anything was wrong with the mavrik, but because I won a ST 4w at my club and I can't quit the Cally CPO crack pipe in proper WRX fashion, convinced myself my fairways needed to match.

The 5W is in my travel bag as the only fairway so its safe for now 🙂

I had this 3wood but the shaft i had it in i hated. Its probably a really good 3wood in the riptide which is one of my favorite shafts. I had a hazrdus in it which i cant get along with. Most shots went right on me but the good ones were very good. Just a bad mix for me so i traded for new 3wood with better shaft for me.  If i had a riptide in it to begin with id probably still have it.

I have always been searching for a perfect 5 or 4 wood.  I am currently playing a standard Mavrik 18* 5 wood made in Japan with a Diamana 50 shaft so it only weighs 311 grams.  Very easy to hit, great feel and sound.  Better for me than the Epic Speed 5 wood.

I read this on another site and find it very interesting about the Mavrik fairway woods:

"It’s a concept that’s still hard to get my mind around, but Callaway has utilized artificial intelligence to optimize every face of every club in their arsenal.  Going from a 3 wood to a 4 wood doesn’t just give a loft change, the face construction is also different to maximize performance."

  • 2 weeks later...

Was able to take the 18 degree regular Mavrik to the range today. Really nice club. My driver SS is 105-108 and I play a Tensei 1K White in both driver and 3 wood at 70g and stiff for both.

The Mavrik came from CPO with the Riptide Black 70 5.5R. Wondering if I may need to change the shaft? Felt easy to launch but seemed soft. Suggestions?

I like the idea of a mid launch/mid spin shaft for the 5W. I don’t think I want to take the Mavrik head into a shaft fitting so interested to hear your suggestions.

If you are hitting your window and it feels right, put some electric tape over the 5.5R so you don't know what its rated at. 🙂

FW wood fittings can be tough when we have bonded hosel clubs, some fitters will have adjustable heads but they almost always are 3w only.  If its feeling good (and weight usually is far more important) than don't over think flex.

On paper a 6.0 is where one likely would start with you but you could just as easily also go up to a 6.5 or down to a 5.5 depending on the feels.

Thanks for responding. The problem I have mentally is whether the feel will change much going from 5.5 to 6? Maybe the Riptide is supposed to feel the way it does and that going up a flex isn’t going to change much. Trying to avoid a shaft change with no real discernible difference. That being said, it definitely feels like it loads more than the 1K but I don’t dislike it yet.

Sorry to derail, that’s my last input!

I know I can swing between flexes just fine, its hard for me to really feel too much of a difference in the same shaft. Weight matters, and families of shafts I can feel.

The Riptide is a follow up to the Evenflow (standard ones, not the counter balanced ones) and I game the older EF Black because the stiffer tip helps with some dispersion from working with a fitter. If you handed me the 6.0 vs 6.5 I am pretty sure I would struggle to feel the difference compared to a Black vs Blue.

When I got my Rogue ST 4W, I ordered it with the no charge Riptide knowing it would be familiar and its working fine, I don't feel the need to rip it out and put in an EF Black 70g 🙂

But that's me...how are you on the feels department when it comes to shafts?
