Garmin R10 vs Trackman 4 test.

I pulled out the first seven swings for club path. These are the numbers that I would focus on when using this as training tool.

Club Path

Trackman  / R10:  1.4 / 1.8 L | 0.4 / 0.9L | 0.0/2.2R | 2.0/4.3R | 2.8/ 2.5R | 3.9/5.0R | 2.8 / 6.2R.  Worst ones were 3.2 & 3.4 degree different. Best one was 0.3 degrees off. 3+ degrees is likely too far off for me - but maybe the alignment / dual radar set up throwing things off a bit.

Some of Trackman's face to path numbers were confusing to me. Multiple shots had a fact to path to the right (open) with a negative spin axis (draw).  Not following that. Have some homework to do there. Gear effect?

Nice! Rainorshine for me and order confirmed on 7/7 and crickets other than CC charge 4 weeks ago and the "could be 6 to 10 weeks for delivery" email response on status. Chose them because they were 1 day shipping from me. Give them a couple more days....

Am I correct in assuming that R10 won't know anything about gear effect?

Or do you tell it you're hitting driver or fairway wood and it applies a fudge factor of some kind to approximate the gear effect?

I did some trig yesterday to figure this out after sending a lob wedge shot 80 yards down the street.

I have the Rukket 7' net, which dips in the middle a bit.  I looked up trackman data for pga launch angle, and it looks like -20* from loft for wedges would be a good target.  Assuming 9' from the net, that leaves you with <1* margin of error with a 58* lob wedge.

All this to confirm what I already knew, that I need an 8' net to comfortably hit a lob wedge.

I'm 9ft from a 9.5ft high net and my gentle ( maybe quarter swings ) 58deg wedge get me very nervous.....too scared to hit a full shot with it as it seem to hit about a foot below the top

No, it wont. Its not measuring spin axis. Its calculating it based on launch direction and club path. Its not perfect for simulation but for swing training this is good enough.

Im skeptical on the reveiw having those two side by side. Also the garmin looked to be aligned with the stick but he has the ball like 6 inches away from the stick, so im sure it was going to be off a little.

In the Hybrid Me videos, he explained that there was no place to input club data so I think we can assume that the R10 won't be compensating for gear effect. They might be able to so some very base normalization by applying some loose compensation based on AoA and club speed (ie you're probably not going to have someone using a driver with 70mph club head speed and -9.0 AoA), but that would just be me spitballing and we have no evidence of it.

Rick Shiels just tweeted that he's "still testing" the R10

Not really sure what's taking so long since they supposedly did their testing a month ago (range session with GCQ and a laser). Couldn't image this taking more than a day to film and a few days to edit. Maybe an additional morning's worth of work to do an indoor comparison.

I will say PlayBetter has been awesome, they sent out a weekly email from the time of order on 7/6 or 7 I can't recall exactly, that gave updates on when their first shipment was coming in when you could expect yours to be shipped based on the order date and the amount coming.  Definitely great communication from them.

In the settings there is input available through My Bag that can be set with average and maximum distances for each club.  Why would that be available if it isn't going to be used.

I now have my R10 and in the Garmin app that I downloaded to my iPhone it provides for input of average and maximum club distances and then if you arrow over, it allows for editing the club type, loft, shaft flex and shaft length. I wonder how many of those reviewing have input this info for their clubs and yardage info and if it might actually make a difference in how the R10 is reading the info.
It is located under more dots at the bottom then under My Bag.

I believe that data is used more for the golf watches and range finders.  On some of the products it has a "virtual caddy" to suggest clubs for shots.

I'm pretty sure he has agreements on most things that he gets to test early as to when the drop date of the video will be.

I doubt it makes any difference in the readings. For one, Home Tee Hero doesn't have anything to select what club you're going to hit. Second, even where you can set club information it only gives a range of lofts for most clubs rather than a specific loft.

Glad to see this comparison.

However, the Garmin is not lined up directly behind the ball. From what I have read here, that's critical.

Also, they talk a great deal about spin axis but never discuss the left or right variation in yards.

I'm looking forward to using this as a sim and that's what I want to know, how accurate is it in determining the direction of the ball flight.

Spin axis doesn't tell me that.

No. Manual says you line up on target line and then can move the ball a foot either way of it. See here

I have seen in his videos he doesnt switch the club when he is hitting shots. Surely the Garmin algorithms will be tailored depending on what club you select. If you look in the bottom right of the screen capture there is "D" for driver.

The Garmin R10 looks amazing for its price.  I don't have room at home, so my local golf club and its practice net is probably the only place I could use the R10 on a regular basis.  However, the practice net is one of those wire mesh enclosures (photo below).  Would the wire meshing affect the Garmin R10 readings?   Anyone have experience hitting into mesh nets with other launch monitors?

(Also, anyone have an idea how much it may cost to replace and install a durable outdoor hitting mat?).

A place that charges you to play golf has that set up?
