40 Yard Dash Time For A Senior Citizen?

I'm a senior citizen and I haven't done any running in many years. For some reason I decided to see how fast I could run a 40 yd. dash and I did it in 7 seconds. Do you think that's a good time for an old man like me?

With practice I should be able to improve on the 7 seconds.

I think it's cool that you are trying it. 7 seconds I would say is a good time for someone 55+ in age. But eventually you can get down to 6 seconds.

I should have said that I'm a pretty old senior. I think that I'm pretty lucky as I still have fast reflexes, almost as fast as a young guy at work who's a boxer.

Sounds like a good time.   Its a starting point and you can compare your progress to it.

I've never done a sprint time as I was a distance athlete.  I used to do a sub 20m 5k, but age catches up and when I quit running I was lucky to do a 22.  2 hip replacements and running is done.  I only cycle now.  I'll be cycling up Alpe D'Huez later this morning. 3,400ft elevation in 8 miles!

Good luck with your progress.

This is kind of a fun topic , i have no idea what i'd run now (i'm 40 though , not a senior). I kinda want to try now that i read this thread

In college i once ran a 4.6 during football training camp. That was pretty good for me. Its humbling to see like 270lb defensive lineman beat that LOL

4.6! That’s dope! I never clocked my 40 in football but I was cra fast.

But now I avoid running like the plague.

I mean, I’m probably in the brst shape of my life. I cycle, HIIT, strength train. But I can’t stand running. It rattles all my brains and bones 🤣

And I’d be afraid to blow out a hammy just sprinting out of the blue. Maybe if I stretched good and warmed up for a while. But now it’s literally 16* in NY so definitely have to wait a while.

I haven't sprinted in forever. But i wasn't at my fastest in College, that's when i started just placekicking after playing receiver in JC and safety in HS.

When i was in HS i ran track and finished 5th in Montreal in the 100M . My claim to fame was i was ummm, the fastest high school....white guy. LOL. Not sure what i could've done in the 40 then.

Now i jog just to stay in shape. I haven't sprinted in so long i literally can't even remember the last time i did. Maybe trying to catch a connection at the newark airport LOL

The world record for over 60 years old, was something in the 12 second range for the 100 a few years ago.  That would translate to a sub 6 second 40.  At that age, that's darn fast.  I'm guessing a 7 second 40 is not doable for 99% of anyone over 60.  That is pretty darn fast.  Most people over 60 I know couldn't jog 40 yards without passing out.

Nice. Ya, sprinting, running, it’s all I did the first 18 years of my life in football and baseball.

But now, i loath running. Just yesterday I was waking to the store and I said to myself, “let me jog a bit”

I jogged like 10 steps and my brains were rattling around and I was like, this sucks! 🤣

But I’ll go cycling 20 miles or do hiit with chest to floor burpees, kicks, punches, jacks.

I just hate running!

But come spring I’m gonna stretch and warm up and time a few 40s!

12 seconds is fast for any age in the 100. It might "sound" slow because we're conditioned to think of the Olympics LOL

you'd be the fastest kid at a lot of high schools around here with that time. (high school goes to grade 11 here FWIW)

How can you measure out 40 yards anyway?!

Ya, but my question is, whether it’s yards or meters, how do you go about measuring it out so you can run it?

I dunno, coaches said they did it and I just ran towards the finish line. Lol

No not back in the day when we were on the field that was all lined out 🤣

We used to run back and forth across the field countless times in every possible increment and combination of yardage.

Im talkin bout like now! If you wanted to time yourself in a 40, barring going to some football field, how would you go about measuring out 40 yards?

Ahh, here’s something…

To the OP, good for you having the desire and curiosity to run in a competitive manner! I’m wondering how I’d do now too, haven’t purposefully sprinted in over 25 years. Would both love and hate to know how slow I’ve become 😂

Awesome Aloha!

Just to be able to do it is pretty darn impressive.

I’m always amazed at people who are fast at distances, 596’s sub 20 minute 5k are crazy fast to me (MtlJeff, I’m sure did it as well). My short little sprinter legs just didn’t work well for distance. We used to run quite a few of them, I think I was around 24 once or twice.
Just about 40 years ago I was a 10.5 100m guy and around 4.5 in the forty (we didn’t run it often for time). Now…..I think I’d probably get about three steps before  a hamstring would go!  Again, color me impressed Aloha.

Sorry to hear about your hip replacements but to cycle 8 miles at 3,400ft. elevation is no small feat. I'd probably fall over trying to do that.

4.6 is really fast as aren't football players in the 4 second range?

I don't know why I tried it as I usually only run to the bathroom. The dumb thing is that I didn't even do any stretching before I tried it.

I think that if I tried to sprint a 100 yards I would probably pass out. A sub 6 second 40 is hell a fast for over 60.

I guess that I'm pretty lucky and I think that I will see if I can improve on the 7 seconds sometime.

I did my running as a youngster playing baseball and basketball until I finished playing semi-pro baseball and on a traveling basketball team after high school.

I did play tournament softball and then played tournament Senior softball in which they allowed pinch runners for anyone and the person would stay in the game. I was one of the pinch runners on my team.

I don't really like running either.

Cycling 20 miles or your other exercises is fantastic.
