Do you play your wedges standard length?

Recommended Posts

For the taller folks who are fitted for longer than standard length irons, do you play standard length wedges? Or do you extend them the same as all your irons or less?

Reason I ask is I’m 1/2” over standard and wedges are freaking crazy expensive these days so I try not to buy new and order them a half inch long. I hate extending a club after the fact because the swing weights turns to 💩 but that’s what I’ve done for the past couple years.

Just curious what other folks do who have to use longer length irons.

I've never gotten on well at all with extensions in irons and especially the one time I tried it with a putter.

Depending on the manufacturer I'm +1/2 in my irons, and I do have my wedges made to fit longer (and a hair flatter) as well (and I don't have them the same length as some OEMs want to sell them) so still some progression in length from 50-54-58 with the added length.

When I shafted all mine I stopped at PW length, so my 52 and 56 are the same as my PW. I'm 6'4", so not outrageous.

FYI, it may just be 1/4" from 50 to 54 and 54 to 58, can't remember. Anyway, I didn't want them too close together distance wise, but didn't want them too short, and whatever I have them at works fine for me for gaps with those wedges.  The 50 is 1/2" shorter than the PW. Again, just me.

I’ve always played longer irons including wedges. (+1” most of my life, just transitioned to +1/2”)   Absolutely needed the extra length for full swings otherwise the chin of the ball was in play too often.   Chipping not so much - can chip/pitch with shorter clubs all day.

I play PW, GW, SW, LW all at the same length.  Extensions are easy, but I also play the same shaft in my wedges that I do in my irons(with lead tape on the shaft itself).  Since I play them longer I port them, this is very easy to do with ANY wedge.  Because of the writing on the wedge it is easy to grab a drill bit and start the hole and then enlarge it it and then do it over and over until you get the weight where you want it.IMG_1166.jpg.5cbdc8057f322ae358510b4c9d38975e.jpg

I added an epoxy that can be colored just because it looked cool to me and stopped rust from forming in the ported holes.  Here is a picture showing my wedges.

I port because obviously the shorter wedges have more weight and I want them all to play similarly, I also play weird lengths and other crazy stuff so you may not need to remove as much weight from your heads as I have on mine.

I was fit into +1" on my irons, ordered my wedges to the same from the manufacturer. I feel like I've been more consistent since the switch from standard length.

My Pings we're +1 but everything else I have gotten has either been stock length or I swapped shafts. I went all graphite, so it's +.5 over steel, so I guess technically my irons are +.5 and that has worked out well.

All my irons and wedges are +1.5.

I'm 6'5"+with a 6'3.5" wingspan.

I used to play 1" in my wedges until Glenn Malher at Titleist fit me about a decade ago. He looked at my wedges and noticed my wear pattern a little low. Said "I don't have a shaft to try it out, but we're going to add a half inch."

It worked, distance and spin control was much more consistent. If you don't have that problem, I don't know why playing stock length would be an issue.

This is super helpful. While its a little more $, I do think its worth it to add length to my wedges. Seems like most folks would agree it would be very tough to play standard length wedges. Reason I ask is I also just got a new 60* and I've been trying to play it at standard length and I keep catching it off the toe and thin. I figured it may have actually not been me lol

IMHO it's more important for a tall golfer to have their wedges extended rather than their irons.

I recommend this thread:

I'm 6'5" with a 39.5-40" WTF, which basically fits me into about +1.5". I don't feel like I can athletically take a full swing with any club below about 36.5". So my wedges are built to 36.75". That's between 7i and 8i in a standard length set, but for me they feel about as short as I can reasonably use.

I went with single length irons because trying to swing a 40.5" 3i and make good contact was proving to be nigh impossible. The issue with my height made a problem at the bottom of the bag where standard clubs will be too short, but extending all the irons by the same amount make the top of the bag too long.

I recently got fit and they put me in a +0.5" shaft. Was really debating what to do with my shafts after I left and wished I had thought of it while there. But after some debate between going with all the same length as my PW for my 50,52,58 I decided instead to just get them all at +0.5" as well for the progression in the set to stay the same. Interested to see how it works out since i've always just played the OTR lengths. Im 6'3 with a 37.25" wrist to floor.

At one fitting, the guy proposed 1" over for irons but had the wedges at 1/2 and 1 inch under. When I looked at the sheet, I asked him why and his reply didn't make sense.

I prefer all wedges same length.

Pay attention to your lie angles.

I've had to adjust a few, especially the SW.

+1/2” in irons, after some trial and error I found +1/2” in my GW and +1/4” in SW/LW work best for me.  Feels the most comfortable in shots around the green and don’t lose any performance on full shots.

Reviving this.... really more concerned about shorter clubs. What do we think about 36" wedges and increasing 3/8 in length to a 38 5/8 3 iron? 6foot4 38" wtf. Can't stand a longer than 39" 3 iron. Below is what I'm thinking.

Lw 36

Sw 36

Gw 36

Pw 36

9 36 3/8

8 36 3/4

7 37 1/8

6 37 1/2

5 37 7/8

4 38 2 /8

3 38 5/8

I play all my wedges 1/2 inch shorter than my 8 iron, which i think is around PW length. Let's say around 36", at a guess.

I find it to be the most comfortable for me.

I was playing One Length 8 iron clubs , including wedges, however, after 3 rounds I feel my wedges are too long and not getting good solid contact on really short shots.

Last night I just chopped them up. Measured to my other "one length wedge set" for comparison and marked it off with some electrical tape and cut directly below the tape.

I'm about 5'11", for reference and no idea how long my arms are.
