It actually gave them more credibility when they fired the commissioner. And Haney was the one who got embarrassed and shown the door. It’s not a secret that they need more viewership there’s nothing to “figure out”. More people watch Mens sports. I actually prefer the lpga except for Mens majors but I’m in the minority obviously. WNBA, hell nah.

I'll offer a different opinion and that is that Phoenix is brutal in the summer, rounds played even at 6am quickly become a death march, and the cost of golf the nice part of the year is increasingly prohibitive and tee sheets are booked. It is still better than a lot of other places but, as another mentioned, when your interests include more than just golf summer is still desert summer. The obvious solution is unlimited funds and a mountain west summer home. 

 

As to not completely detract from the topic of this thread, any words on a next batch of announcements? I thought I read somewhere that supposedly they are done for this year?

If the PGA Tour allowed releases to LIV, it would enable LIV to easily build stronger fields and a better product.  The decision to play for LIV is much easier on the players if they can do it without repercussions.  As soon as the decision became, choose the PGA Tour or choose LIV, I'm sure it made a lot of guys think twice. 

 

LIV would naturally want to get to the table and work something out with the Tour.  They had nothing to lose.  The Tour on the other hand had little to gain and a lot to lose.  They may lose in the end but I'd rather lose fighting than giving it away.  How do you explain to the tournament sponsors and TV partners that your allowing marquee players play 14 weeks on a competing tour, some weeks competing in your home country?  How would the rest of the Tour feel about a select group of players being allowed to work outside of the PGA Tour member guidelines while retaining their membership?  If LIV achieves significant success, how will these Tour players feel if the purses drop when sponsors and TV renew because the PGA Tour no longer owns the market? 

 

Norman is ambitious.  It's doubtful that any part of his plan has protecting the best interest of the PGA Tour while attempting to build LIV.  The PGA Tour has no choice but to make it hard on LIV by not sharing their players and LIV has no choice but to make it hard on the PGA Tour by luring their players with huge sums of money, no cuts, shorter tournaments and lavish perks.  The golf market is just not that big and this is a fight to see who will eventually own it.  If LIV were a tour just looking to hold a few mega events that would be one thing but it's pretty clear that the goal is to build a premier world tour that sits on the top of the pyramid above all other tours.  From a competitive business standpoint, both sides are using the resources at their disposal.  In the end, if the players and the fans prefer what LIV has to offer, it will win out.  Right now you have the PGA Tour thinking they're entitled to pro golf because of what they've built and LIV thinking they're entitled to pro golf because they have more money.  It will be interesting to see what wins.  Nothing would surprise me.

Let me help you ... FedEx is doing business in Saudi Arabia similar to Nicklaus Design doing business in Saudi Arabia. Fedex is not funding a rival golf league whose sole purpose is to destroy the PGA Tour.

No one was banned... Players were suspended for violating PGA Tour rules in playing opposite events without permission. 

 

Saying banned makes it sound as if the players are victims and they are not. They made the conscious choice of playing for a different tour. Again these players were suspended. 

 

Banned is straight from LIV playbook in making the PGA Tour the villain when in fact they are the ones who are having their players poached. LIV has hired political PR folks that specialize in wording such as this, like Ari Fleischer.

It's okay for billion dollar companies to profit off "doing business" with entities which are too abhorrent for individuals to get a pay day from. But we are simply "too dense" to comprehend that doing business with Saudi's (directly or indirect) is different than working for them directly such as LIV Golf. As long as Fedex or whatever multibillion dollar company is the one profiting it's all good, I mean that market is too big to pass up.

Tennis has a relevant team series where the big guys play? I must have missed that. Golf, like tennis, is an individual sport. If you want to play a team event you need to establish a format where the teams actually play against each other. Counting scores in stroke play is not a team effort. That’s why all the team competitions in Amateur golf are match play. The LIV Teams are just a vehicle to plunk down even more money for the rich. Who cares if the Majesticks needed fewer strokes over three days than the Hi-Flyers? No one. The glue that holds the LIV together is money. Nothing more. 
And if you talk about endorsements by Nadal, Federer and Djokovic: Those guys have won 60 Grand Slams between them. And they have personality, as have Tiger and Mickelson. Koepka, DJ and Bryson have 7. And especially Koepka and Johnson are boring dudes that happen to be good at golf.

Because that's why this whole thing exists. It's been well established that Greg wants to take down the PGA. That's why the PGA won't work with them. That's why the PGA declined the meeting with the Saudis because they were informed that there would be no compromise from them.

 

Does anyone really think LIV invited Stenson to capture the Swedish audience? Or his golfing prowess? Or was it more likely to throw a wrench into the Ryder Cup? And if it's to disrupt the Ryder Cup, how could it coexist?

All this says is it's time to cancel Fedex, they suck anway and their uniforms are tacky. Since UPS cut loose Louis and no-major Westwood, maybe they can take over the title sponsor role. UPS CUP UP IN HERE. Then we can rename the tour Brown Town

They really can't, the LIV business model is not sustainable for the long term. They essentially are creating a one-way ticket out of the game of golf for top players via golden parachute.  They basically needed to come up with numbers large enough for the top guys to basically kiss their career as a whole good bye. If you are one of the 100m+ guaranteed guys, let's say they are allowed back on tour and into majors. What incentive do they have to keep their game sharp, continue to travel and compete for less money than they are making on interest alone from their investments? Why walk for 4 days in the sun for peanuts? 

 

A few might still stick around to fuel lavish life styles (or bad habits), but the majority seem to be viewing this as a fast track to early retirement. The golf talent pool will shrink via copious amounts of Saudi cash.  At some point they will either run out players to pay or simply tire of paying them, in which case we might see Tiger Woods win at Augusta at age 53
