Honma Irons now available at.....COSTCO !?!?

Costco will buy anything in bulk they can make money on. I bet the Honma NA distributor had a bunch of these sitting around for whatever reason (supply chain disruption last few years, etc), and given how PGATSS just clearanced them all out didnt need any more. So enter 'bulk buyers' like Costco who are willing to buy pallets of them and sell them cheaper. I bet this is a one-time thing.

The PGATSS clearance deal @ $599 was better, though. Thats where I got mine - fantastic irons.

Hello GolfWRX world, my name is Chuck Couch and I am the VP of Sales for Honma Golf North America. I was alerted to the fact that Costco is offering these TR20 iron sets this morning 3/29/22. I have spoken with the Costco Resolutions team and we are currently working to discover if these irons are real or counterfeit. As Honma Golf does not have an account with Costco, if these are real sets, we will then begin the search for the Honma Account that transshipped the product to Costco. The Honma Brand has integrity and rest assured that we will do the right thing -

There's obviously an appetite for a set being sold this way. Definitely wouldn't be a good experience if they're counterfeit, but perhaps you should explore actually trying to sell something like it officially through them instead of just shutting it down entirely.

Prob fake

I do find this whole thing interesting - first a link shows up on Costco, then the link goes dead before anyone can verify it, then a new member comes outta nowhere and says he's the VP Of Sales for Honma...

Well, one thing for sure is that Chuck Couch is the VP of US sales:

https://us.honmagolf.com/blogs/news/honma-names-industry-veteran-chuck-couch-vice-president-of-sales

Kind of an odd one alright.  I guess that if Costco actually did get a hold of a big lot of fake Honma clubs at least they will be taken off the market which would be good.

It's easy to fake a screen name.  I, for example, am not a piece of costume from an Adam Sandler movie.

NO!  I was certain that you were!

Seems kind of unlikely that anyone would fake that user name and come up with that story though?  Certainly is possible but given the circumstances I think that the post is probably genuine.  Possibly we will find out at some point.  I guess that it would be fairly easy to verify if somebody wanted to spend the time.

Good for Honma at getting the product removed. I buy sparkling water, granola, and tires at Costco, but for an upscale brand it would have done some damage to the brand image for some consumers.

Sams Club used to do this type of thing with high end products such as watches.  They are buying from an authorized dealer but the serial numbers are usually buffed out so that the item cannot be traced back to the authorized seller that is supplying the items in bulk to Sams Club, Costco, etc.  Once the serial numbers are removed the item is considered a “grey market” item.  The items are authentic but are now being sold by a non-factory authorized retailer that does not have an official account with the manufacturer to sell the item.  Therefore, the pricing is usually cheaper.

Costco does this with watches as well.  I’ve seen a few rolex air masters and oyster perpetuals over the years at my local warehouse

Not sure what @Chuck Couch did but maybe they came to an agreement? Looks like they are 'member only' now so maybe thats a rule they have to follow.

At any rate, when PGATSS was clearancing out the TR line late last year for like 60% off it was an even better deal - thats where I got mine for $499

Costco is world-class master of supply chain management (and its legal pitfalls).  And they've got a strategy of delivering high profile 'value' to their members to make the price of membership more palatable.   I get the sense that they are always looking for one-offs (and more sustainable) situations that make strategic sense even if not immediately profitable.  Not just in the world of golf.  So, if Honma (for instance) doesn't have its vendor relationships with Chinese manufacturers properly nailed down, I imagine Costco would consider them fair game.  And I hear generally good things about Costco golf balls, putters and wedges.  Costco also seems to have an enduring relationship with Calloway.

Full disclosure--I have a Costco membership and use it, but I don't buy golf stuff (or Rolex watches, for that matter) at Costco.  I also don't think less of a brand just because some of its product line can be bought inexpensively in a big box store like Costco.

I agree with this. I buy a lot of groceries and gas at Costco, tires, and some electronics there. I plan on trying their golf balls and gloves. But I never think less of a brand for some items being sold there. I usually think they struck a deal to get their products in more people’s hands.
