Gloves

How many of you guys play without a glove? I quit playing with a glove 20 years ago because I play corded grips that work well with my swing speed and I don’t have to take it off to putt. When I wore a glove it would be lucky to make it 18 holes without a hole in the palm or pointer finger. My hands feel like leather now and I never get blisters  thanks

I used a glove the first few years I played. One day when the glove tore and I didn't have a replacement I finished the round.  I liked the way it felt so I never got another. 20 years later I still don't wear one.

I will use rain gloves if I get caught in the rain but that's not too often.

So I actually play better without one, but I can't play without one. I have had a horrible habit since I was a child of picking at the skin on my hands and fingers and when I have blisters or calluses or whatever work up I will pick at them until they bleed. So if I played without gloves my hands would stay raw all the time. I actually play with each hand gloved for this reason alone.

That's too many.  I found a glove that lasts a year, the old one becomes my practice glove.   I play over 100 rounds a year.  I get them for about 12 bucks each.

i sent 5 down to my house in florida. so i really went through 5 here last year.

i don’t really overthink it. once a glove gets ratty, i just toss it.

$60-70 a year on gloves is a nominal cost.

100 rounds on a glove is pretty impressive though.

Ahh, I think the secret to non-ratty (dirty) gloves is to buy black gloves... they never show the soiling.  And they go better with my outfits.  Though they are hard to find.  But when a glove gets stiff from accumulated sweat, the romance is over.  My glove of choice is the Footjoy Weather-Sof.  But ChipStrokes... don't be ordering any of the black; they're in short supply.

Whew!  I am thankful for that.  Over the years I've had gloves that can barely last 10 rounds.  Stumbled upon the Weather-Sof... thin enough for good feel, excellent grip and durable.

If I could find the right grip, and I have tried a lot, I would prefer to play with no glove.  However with sweaty hands gloves are a must.  I usually use 2 around especially if I’m walking.  I have even used rain gloves on super hot and humid days.  I usually buy cheap gloves since I keep 6-8 in my bag.  Once they rip, I toss.

I don’t use a glove either. I’ve never found one that fit well enough. I do buy them periodically to try different fits but I almost never wear it after the first tee. Either they are baggy or so tight that it’s a hassle to get on and I can’t bend my fingers. I have big(ish) knuckles though.

I get on ok with the MCC grips. Sometimes I put tape on my left pointer finger.

I have always been a feel guy in sports. I lived in the Northeast the first 42 years of my life before I moved to CA. The only time I ever wore gloves was cleaning snow and ice off the car (stupid if you dont). I have not worn a glove on the golf course in easily 25 years. It just feels more natural to me.

Maybe the most under utilized thing in golf by amatuers is not cleaning your grips every few rounds with a sponge, dawn dish soap, and warm water. They will feel like new again unless they are worn out. I cannot tell you how many times I have handed someone their club and could not believe how smooth or dirty the grip is. Wedge grips are always dirty because we put them on the ground around the greens after we are done chipping. Wash your grips and you will never want to wear a glove again unless you have a problem with your hands.

If you play every week you should change your driver and putter grip every 6 months because most of us use those clubs the most and they wear out faster.

I also have no blisters or callus on my hands.

Depends on how shredded my left hand is.  Sometimes the calluses get big and irritate the live skin underneath pretty badly and it will effect how I swing the club.  I used to be a "never glover" but I have become more comfortable playing with a glove.  Especially down in South Texas where the humidity is brutal in the summer.  I have yet to find a glove where the thumb seam doesn't wind up under my thumb after wearing it for very long.  I can't stand that.

I think I could go without if I had Dri Tac or similar grips on all my clubs. Anything that was soft like that. I don't like getting big callouses at the base of my fingers cause it messes with my music hobby.

As far as making them last, a friend of mine keeps his in a ziploc bag and it makes a huge difference. They never fully dry out and get crusty. I've found I get the same advantage by putting my gloves in a rain-proof pocket on my H2NO bag. If that zipper is tight the gloves stay soft and pliable.

Also I have to shout out FJ rain gloves. They're great when it's raining for sure, but I also wear them when it's cold and windy since they come in a pair.

i’ve heard this before. quite a bit actually, and im sure it works well.

i guess i just don’t care that much to make them last.

i take my glove off between shots and for anything around the green and putting.

beyond that, i don’t do anything to extend their lives. i just consider them consumables and at $6-7 i’m cool getting 15-20 rounds out of them.

A four-pack at Costco (Kirkland) is $20. They wear better than the Titleist gloves I’ve worn for years. I have tried playing without a glove but I cannot get used to the feel.

Love the Costco gloves (the real leather ones). I believe they were once branded as Callaway gloves or at least Callaway produces them for Costco.

anyway either they are really good gloves or my grip is really good because I can hit at least a thousand balls before a hole forms, usually on my thumb. I’m pretty sure I routinely get way more than a thousand balls out of them.

I never bothered really trying but I can’t play without a glove. I had a match in high school in the rain and couldn’t keep anything dry, tried playing without the glove and it was an all around terrible experience that apparently scarred me for life.

I switched about 6 months ago to Jumbo Max in size Large.  I was at the range 2 weeks ago, finished hitting about 200 balls and was walking to the putting green.  I reached over to take my glove off and found I had never put it on.  Haven't worn a glove since.  I find I have more feel of the club without it.  Just walked 9 holes at 92* and 50% humidity.   In FL that is dry!  Didn't need the glove at all.

I haven't worn a glove in at least 20 years...waste of money.   When I did, I'd have to rotate 2-3 (each hole I'd change) in the summer months, then of course they dried out, etc.

Look at all those pros averaging scores in the high 60's wasting money on a glove.  Guess they wear it to keep their one hand warm or as a stylistic accoutrement.  Giving you a hard time but there is a value to wearing a glove.  You can really pull down hard with that lead hand without the club twisting, turning or slipping.

Cuz those millionaire pro golfers pay for their equipment....if you need a glove to hang onto the club, go for it.
