I enjoy his videos and his swing speed is around where I'm at these days.  Anyone have similar results with softer and lighter flex shafts?

There was a similar discussion on this "Autoflex at a discount" last year?

If i remember correctly ... the Mobile Clubmaker guy featured in Mr Short Game's video = also a GolfWRX member/ contributor on these forums / fora.

Fwiw - I ended up testing the Miyazaki Sr. Flex (I believe? It was Gold) and couldn't quite get it to work.  It just spun too much.  The NV is still un gripped and un tipped in the garage.

I am experimenting on a fun club soon.

I have a Graffalloy Pro blue 45 in a regular flex

That will go into a Krank 6* head

my expectation is not an autoflex- but just wanted a light and whippy shaft for more ballspeed fun haha

Have you tried this experiment with a lower loft head?

I lost interest tbh.  I've still hit some of my longest drives ever with the Autoflex, and have never eliminated one side of the fairway more completely (my miss after several rounds with Arccos was 100% left), but it was a cheap curiosity experiment.

More to your question - I believe I tested with 9 degree head turned down to 8.  It definitely went pretty good - but if I recall correctly, I was testing with a Mavrik 3D and got the itch to pick up a SIM2 and just had no desire to hit anything else as it was new and shiny.  😕.    My speed also jumped quite a bit during that time (superspeed and technique) and the softer stuff no longer fit quite as well.

Maybe try something not as extremely soft.  Like an 'R' flex

I've been pretty happy with my Stealth / Ventus TR combo and haven't had any interest in experimenting recently.  It's the longest combo I've ever tried save the Autoflex - and I can hit a little cut with it without TOO much effort.  For my current swing / game - it's a better fit (I'm in the low 170s ball speed with range balls, so while more distance would be nice - it's just not what I need to improve scores right now).

TLDR;

The shafts they highlighted were a Project X Evenflow Riptide CB 5.0 40 R flex and the older, original Fujikura Motore F3 55 R.

Just wanted to clarify the shafts b/c I think there is a typo in the video on the flex designations.

The PX Riptide is the 40g 5.0 shaft. The shaft is actually heaver (into the 50s weight). We ended up testing against the 505 Autoflex. I had thought Mr Shortgame had the 505x, so the shafts I brought were both a bit stiffer especially the PX, which I think would match up very well against the 505xx.

The Fuji was the OG Motore F3 55g in Light Flex. I also tipped it 1 inch so it really falls in between the Light and R flex.

Do you think a Grafalloy Blue Pro Launch (45 grams) will work with a Ping 425 Max if I get the swing weight to D1? Are the bend profiles similar enough?

Yes, I think that combo can work. The main idea is really about getting something at least 10g lighter than what you currently use and 2 flexes softer. The exact bend profile is less important as long as it's not some sort of super low launch style shaft.

Heck, that said, you could still even use a low/low type of shaft if you match the weight and flex up and get similar results. Just might not feel exactly like Autoflex.

There is no magic in the Autoflex. Get a lighter, softer shaft, throw in a lighter head weight to drop the swing weight, and there you go.

Is the Evenflow Riptide CB cobalt the same bend profile/same shaft as the blue?

I used the 40g version in 5.0

Should match up pretty close with the 505X.

Hi Adam, what do you think the riptide Evenflow 4.0 40g ladies flex would play like? like a autoflex505? I have a 97mph avg swingspeed. Would this be worth a try? I can get one on sale right now. I usually use a weaker stiff like tensei blue.

Yes, that would be the closest match to the 505 from what I've tested.

Well I have been playing the SF505 ( and love it ) since it came out so almost 3 years now. I bought the shaft you mentioned above just to try out of curiosity. Should be here either tomorrow or Saturday. Once it does I'll play it and let you guys know how it compares. My SS is about the same as yours as well, 95ish and my HCP hovers around 6.

I would recommend the Ping Distanza shaft if you can get your hands on one.   40 grams and senior flex.

One of the guys ( he's 61 ) we play with has one in his G400 MAX and he kills that thing. So I decided to try it as well. It wasn't near as consistent or long as my Autoflex. Like I stated earlier, the Riptide 4.0L 40 gram pretty much produced the same results as my Autoflex.

So I actually did this with a TM Non Velocore Ventus Blue.  The SIM 2 that I have was traded to me with a 5A shaft in it.  From someone who played X flex for many years I did a little research because A wouldn't work for me.  After going down the worm whole I found that the profile of an A flex Ventus Blue is closer in profile to a S version than the R is... I know, weird, but there was a graph lol.  Long story short is that I took the driver tip off of the shaft, tipped it 1 inch and took a chance it was going to work.  It is STILL in the bag a year later and I hit it a ton.  Better distance than I have ever had in a driver and it is a fairway finder.

I went from a 70G X shaft into the 5A Ventus so there is the weight and flex difference for the budget autoflex and tipped to preferred feel.  Ended up repeating on 3 wood, 7 wood and hybrid.  Playing the best golf i have in a long time.
