What Makes an Intimidating Bag of Clubs?

I played with a young man one time that had a bag full of irons and nothing else who could spank the ball 200+ yards. None of the rest matters because all I saw were irons.

couple guys at my club are ex AAA MLB players. They wont even bring woods and still manage sub 75 rounds. Crazy tall, Crazy speed.

our threesome got hooked up with a local professional hockey player years ago...same kind of thing...excellent hand/eye coordination with excellent contact...he was very very good

I can't remember seeing a bad player with either of the following:

  • Old(er) clubs, new grips
  • Iron sweet spots worn

If there's a wear mark on the sweet spot of the putter, look out!

I'm going to disagree with this one... I've got good hand eye coordination so I've worn the center of my putter, but my path and speed suck, so no one is intimidated by my putting.

One small point I would add to the discussion regarding drivers - I don't think it's so much an older head on a new shaft, I think it's more the opposite.  Much like DJ and his Speeder, I think an intimidating player found a shaft that works for them many years ago and can now just swap out to (basically) whatever head they want.

If I see someone with a Ventus, all due respect to present company, I ain't scared.  Could be a player or a poseur.  But if I see a Motore 8.x in a bag, I know that someone's been playing that shaft for a good while and knows exactly what to expect out of it, regardless of what gen the clubhead is.

Hahaha... I have an 8.2 ts in my 3 wood that I've had for about 10 years and just bought an 8.2 ts to go in my driver.

... I played my muni here in Phoenix that hosts quite a few tournaments including State Championship and pre qualifier for the Phoenix Open with two Pro's from Desert Mountain. It was their day off and they didn't want to run into any members, have a few beers and enjoy their day off. 50 yr old with 2 hybrids and i210's so meh. 35 yr old with Titleist 690MB's that were pretty beat up, no hybrids, 3 wood and driving iron so pretty easy to recognize the player.

... The 50 yr old did nothing special like crazy long off the tee or knocking down flags with long irons but just rock solid hitting every par 5 in two and playing them 5 under. The 35 yr old was all over the place and I was shocked he was a Pro. 50 yr old shot an easy 65 and the 35 yr old shot something like an 83.

Bag not important.  Look at the swing.  That will tell you much more.

Not necessarily so. I have seen guys with crappy swings (according to guru standards) that can play. Good example back in the day Jim Thorpe and Allen Doyle. If you were at a course and did not know who they were and saw them warming up on the range you may think easy money. Yeah they would clean your clock. But I will admit I have seen both sides of the equation guys with great swings that could play too. One of the wonderful things about this game is you never know until you get on the course.
