 Intimidating Bag of Clubs ?

That would be my bag of clubs with 14 head covers.

I play most every Sat. at the same time at the same course. I see a lot of the same people when checking in. I know this guy was making fun of me about my iron covers. He says I have to ask you. I'm wondering what clubs you have hiding under all those covers. I reply the only way you are going to find out is to play me a money game with me. He says I can't do that. You might have the latest and greatest hiding under there. I replied or I could have an old set of mismatched clubs with lots of lead tape. He replies so true.

So I got to thinking I really need an intimidating bag this year. My current irons are Nike Vapor Pro Combo which are nice, but they are way too clean and I’m not going to put in the work.

So I hit our local Play it Again last night and found two good candidates.

Set 1 - P730 5-P with a P760 4 iron. Lead tape on all. Great heavy wear spot coverage on the the 7 & P with a lot of bag dings throughout. Grips were original but surprisingly supple.
C Taper X 130g, gave me pause for thought.

Set 2 - Srixon 565 5 iron and 965 7-P.
Somebody reshafted with KBS Tour S and didn’t seat the ferrules but otherwise good candidates. Both 7 & 8 iron good amount of wear in the center, PW a little less so. Lot of bag chatter throughout.

Got to thinking probably ought to look at wedges. Found SM6 50 with KBS Tour X and TM Milled Grind 54 SB11 with KBS Tour FLT 120 S. Both heads are black that rusts and they had started the process. The TM 54 had lead tape residue as well as lead tape stuck in the Taylormade logo. Hmmm, I recently purchased a still in shrink wrap TM ZTP 60/06 with a KBS Wedge flex.

It was a slam dunk, I have Srixon ZX5 9.5 driver, ZX 3W and ZX 5 wood all new within last 2 months with Smoke 6.0 60g, RDX in the 5 wood.

I also currently carry a Cally XHot Pro with Project X PXv 6.0.

Putter Ping AYD.

I went with the Srixon set, the SM6 and the TM MG 54. It seemed like the

golf gods were telling me to go all KBS. I mean how fortuitous right?

So I did a trade with some of my excess clubbage and got them.

I am toying with the idea of getting a Srixon ZX 22 Hybrid up top with another Smoke 6.0. Should I do that? Or is it too poseur?

Also need advice on what I should do about the new 60 ZTP. I’m thinking just leave it as is and let them wonder, dude’s so good he never NEEDS his 60.

For the bag I have a MNML stand carry that is all white. That’s staying, it’s a very cool bag.

Shoes, couple months ago in the pro shop at our local course just paid for me and my wife for 9 and realized I didn’t stick my shoes in her car.

They had True on sale and my wife said just buy a pair, we tee off in a few

minutes. Ok. I did.  They are like slippers on the course. It’s like cheating seriously.

I also have 3 dozen Tour BX ready

to go.

Presently running the irons under hot water to reseat the ferrules on the Srixon combo set, I think I’ll leave them a little gnarled.

Any suggestions to improve the intimidation factor?

There are some very bold coyotes on my course.

When it's early or late in the season and I'm going to be alone out there, I'll pack some protection.  I've had a small pack of four follow and circle me before.  They were a good 50-75 yards away, but could've closed the distance in a second.  I just grabbed a wedge and kept pushing my cart back to the truck that day.  Promised myself they'll never end another round early.

I played with a guy yesterday… beat to hell MX-63’s (complete with quarter sized wear marks and split grips), bunch of dirty hybrids, SM4’s, trashed headcovers, old push cart. Hell, even his vest had holes in it.  Newest club was a Maverick driver. I was not intimidated.

He didn’t miss a fairway and probably shot 3 over.

About the 10th hole, while talking gear, he asked if I thought he should upgrade. “I wouldn’t change a damn thing” I told him.

Scrapped this experiment. Too much work.

Traded for a New Srixon 22 hybrid which fits the bag nicely and a custom Sik Jo Slant neck (smoking deal on it!).

It was fun for a day.

Bags and their contents don't mean anything to me. You know the guy can play the first ball he hits, but by then the bet is made.

Usually the people with all matching woods and irons aren't a factor,

People with all brand new players gear are usually in over their head.

Toughest guy I played more than once last year was a man in his late 70's using  old Snake eyes blades, a Wilson 8802, and woods that looked like they came out of a bin at Salvation Army.

He couldnt hit a lot of the par 4's in regulation, but managed to get up and down a huge percentage of the time, it was crazy.

So many posers out there I never look at their bags. Played with many guys with blades that can’t play a lick. It’s the guys with older clubs you have to worry about most of the time.

If you every have the chance to watch a college golf tournament, you would be surprised to see how many players are using TM Spiders or some kind of mallet.

He didn’t say the most expensive bag….

But to play along, my radar goes up when I see some guy on the putting green with an ancient 8802 with rust on the shaft where their bag has rubbed the chrome off.
