Prescription Oakley Sunglasses for Golf

Recommended Posts

  • 3 weeks later...

Played RX Oakey Flak Jackets in VR28 for bright sunny days and G30 for overcast, both lenses discontinued. Then played modern version Flak Jacket regular RX Prizm Golf for all conditions, were great. Then out of nowhere, cataracts in both eyes. Had surgery 18 months ago, now 20/15, tried regular non RX Prizm Golf, way to bright, went with Prizm Dark Golf. Use Black Iridium Polarized for driving.  This chart might help sorting out the different lenses.

Anyone have experience with Oakley Progressive Golf lenses?  We’ve had a few pair of single vision in our house and they work well, but I need progressives and would like to get down to one pair of sunglasses.

Guy that I play with has bifocal sunglasses and he complains about them and wishes he got single vision.

I have progressives for every day but cannot play them on the golf course. The transition point makes the ball go from crystal clear to a little fuzzy throughout the span of my swing. And that, my friend, is an ugly result.....😎. I just play golf with my single vision prescription sunglasses and it is much better.

Oakley has a golf-specific progressive that I’d like to try but am not quite ready to commit.

Strong recommendation for the Prizm golf, not the dark version, esp for overcast conditions. 30% light transmission is fine, even on the brightest days here in FL. Would absolutely NOT get progressives for golf.

I would seriously look at REKS; after owning a pair of oakleys w RX lens, I switched to REKS. They have a lens similar to GOLF Prizm and the REKS are indestructible. Plus half the cost of Oakleys.

can you get them with prescription lenses though?

Would clear lenses like that South African guy wears be the ticket or should I get some sort of sunglasses even for the overcast days?

Any reason to not get progressives? The Oakley lens looks to address some of the issues that standard progressives have.

Just ordered a new pair this morning. Last two prescription glasses have been the Prizm golf and it has been a great lens for all activities, including boating, coaching baseball, driving, along with golf.  The Prizm technology is great, my son uses them for baseball and fishing, and I’ve had no reason to look outside of the golf offering. To the question on progressive, had a friend who had them and said they absolutely did not work for golf.

They make 2 golf lenses, but ended up with the Prizm Road.  Very similar to the golf dark, but thought it had a better contrast.  My are not a prescription.  Can't go wrong with Oakleys on the golf course.

I researched this quite a bit and wound up with two pairs - prizm road for less light and prizm sapphire for brighter days. Neither seem as dark as my Maui Jim Hawaii blue lenses, and both are just fine for 95% of the conditions you might come across in the summer.

I am still using the Flak Jacket XLJ.  I have the Prizm road and the root beer lenses that came with them.  I do like that I can swap lenses depending on the conditions or time of year.  Just start doing this, so not sure how long before it breaks down the frames.

I  currently wear the Half Jacket 2.0 XL with the prizm dark golf lenses.

I have a lot of Oakleys I have purchased over the years.

I've tried bifocal glasses and progressive lenses to try and play golf in but I couldn't use either.

I went with single vision contacts and they are the answer for me. Not only have they worked for me to play golf they allow me to wear any of my sunglasses. If it becomes too dark to wear my sunglasses I can simply take them off and still see to play.

Yeah I don't think the brand matters with that issue. I am no optical expert by any means, but unless your head stays absolutely still until after the ball is gone, you will be trying to hit a ball that is visually changing at some point during the swing. I am sure some people that are very mechanical could pull it off, but I rely on my hand-eye coordination to some degree and that is just too much for me. I still love my progressive sunglasses and use them for everything else in my life except for golf.

Oakley golf progressives are different than other progressives.....I've worn progressives for past 10 years and have tried many.

Those saying wear progressives for everything but golf...it depends on where your vision is (far, near, etc.)

Good luck buying glasses based on a web forum opinion....find an optometrist who knows sports and has experience fitting for them.

I have a thread from late 2021 that discussed my search for them.

But to start iwth I had a great indiepth phone call with SportRX, as they have sport specific agents who will know golf.  When I told him I played on the East Coast in often hazy and overcast conditions, he said no dout the Rose lens would be best and after getting two pair I agreed completely.

I can't recommend them enough.

Thanks for posting the link. If I read correctly, you tried a progressive but then went back to a single vision that worked better?

Was it the Oakley progressive or a SportRX progressive?

Sorry just seeing this now.

So good question, I actually have both.   The original were progressive, the 2nd pair were single vision, I wore them mostly for golf and wore the progressive for everyday sunglasses and driving.    I had cataract surgery last fall, so I don't wear any now.    But the above comment about curved frames is correct if you have a astrong astigmatism.    In fact, the guys are SportRX  are all over that, when they see your presription, the will tell you what frames will work for your prescription and which ones wont.

The frames were baisc Oaklyey, the lens are made speifically by the SportsRX Lab.

Flak 2.0 here with standard Golf Prism lenses for the past 4 years with RX the past 3. I am very used to how crisp golf vision is and its dark at all, I can play with them with flat light/dusk. Hats anyway when its super bright 🙂

I would never use progressives personally for golf.  I have a mild progressive Rx and when playing indoors with those glasses the transition point is too close to golf angles for me so I grab a non-progressive set instead (I could use the Oakleys indoors too)

Draw back of the Oakley's is the cost of their Rx lenses (SportRX will be a bit less for their lenses).

FYI I own a pair of prescription Oakley Flak 2.0’s and IMO the lenses are not very durable and they pop out too often.

So about a year ago I read various threads and ordered a pair of golf lens prescription sunglasses from REKS out of Florida and they have been as advertised. The standard Sling Blade is their version of Flak 2.0. Got it with the golf lens (rose) and love it.

Just ordered another pair as they have a huge July 4th sale going on their best lens (trivex). My other pair are still going strong so this time I went with brown polarized in the same frame. Highly recommend these folks. Excellent customer service and reasonable prices plus free replacement warranty included. I need prescription sunglasses to play and am a big fan of REKS.

I'm in need of new sunglasses.   Thanks for your suggestions.   I've ordered a trial frame and if they work I'm going with the brown polarized lenses.  I have older heavy frames with said lenses and really like them.
