2023 Cobra King CB & Tour

I'm torn between the 923 Forged and the King Tours. From my testing, both perform exceptionally well, with the Forged being a touch longer due to the stronger lofts. I prefer the overall look and feel of the Tour's though.

Another factor is that Mizuno offer my preferred shaft and grips at no upcharge, whereas Cobra do not. Yet I keep coming back to the King Tours nonetheless.

Decisions, decisions. 🤔

I’m a Mizuno fan but I think the Tours are better feeling which is tough to say. I hit the Tours against the Forged and the Forged just didn’t do it for me.

Full disclosure: I was hitting 6 irons for comparison so it was a Chromoly iron for Mizuno.

I received my Tours less than two weeks after my order.  I had my first range session with them last night and below are my initial takeaways:

Cosmetics:

  • They are a very good looking iron. The styling is unique but classic.
  • They are a fairly decent sized iron; smaller than the ZX5 mkii that I gamed for about 3 months.
  • I really like the shorter blade length.
  • Obviously they are larger than my blades and T100 I will be comparing them against.
  • I did not have an i230 to compare against but going from memory they seemed fairly close in size with the Tour having a slightly smaller top line and narrower sole.

Performance

  • This is tough to judge because I was swinging like a trash monster yesterday.
  • These are not hot irons which I honestly prefer. Eyeballing at the range I would say the distance is roughly in line with the T100S in my bag (combo with T100 in short irons).
  • I have Tours bent 2 degrees weak so keeping up with 100S was pretty impressive.
  • These irons feel great - definitely better than the T100/S combo set.
  • They don't feel as good as Mizuno blades - they are firmer than a Mizuno blade but that is not a knock.

Forgiveness

  • I would say the Tours are more demanding than i230.
  • You need to find the relative center of the face on a consistent basis to maximize value.
  • They are fairly demanding from what I could tell but again, my swing was not great yesterday.

My swing did start to groove at the end of the session and I was dropping the 6 iron on a flag consistently.  I will upload some comparison pics later this evening.

I prefer the Cobra Tour to T100S, then again I’m looking for a little help so the slightly larger sole is a win for me.

I don’t like a wide sole and the Cobra sits right on that edge of me liking it. Just a shade larger and it would be too wide. They just sit in a great spot.

Yeah, they are right in there with J15CB, Srixon 7 series, PXG T heads. Enough sole to boost launch a bit and not dig but they don’t play like a wide-soled iron.

Well, I just couldn’t resist and ordered a blended set. Tour 3 iron, CB 4-7, MB 8-P. Going to bend them once they come in. Thinking 1 weak on the Tour and 1 weak on the others but we’ll look at gapping as I hit them

Just got my set today and something looked very familiar about them…

They are incredibly similar in size and shape to the J15CBs in my bag. Only obvious difference is th J15CcB leading edge grind.

Still haven’t hit the Cobras yet, but if they perform as well as the J15CBs….

they’re gonna be a popular iron for lots of folks.

Playing partner just got a set of tours and I put the 7 iron side by side with my ZX7. Very similar in terms of sizing, blade length and shape. The tours had a smoother, rounded top line which made it appear thinner and the toe was a little rounder where to the top line meets.

Got 9 in today with the King Tours and they blew my old 21 apex pro’s out of the water.

Just stupid good and easy to hit. Had a shot with a 7 iron that I caught a shade heavy and I was punished by about a 3 yard loss.

These are going to be one of the best iron sets of the year.

Agree, these things are sleepers. Better than anything else I hit this year. Love my set. Cobra is killing it this year.

The CBS look amazing. Has anyone done a side-by-side comparison of the CB to T100, Apex Pro, or 0311T? I’m just wondering how they compare in size, offset, and sole width.

From the photos I’ve seen it looks like the CB has minimal offset.

I’m thinking minimal Offset on the CBS coz my Tours are slightly larger and the offset is low on them.

Found the specs on Cobras website.

Interesting. I had no problem customizing mine a couple of months back. As I look through the options, Steel Stiff is the only one where you can actually even get them. All other options indicate Sold Out. If you go to Single Irons and look for Steel Regular, 6, 7 & Gap are sold out.

I think it is probably a lack of the King Tour heads that is causing the problem.

Does anyone know why the custom options on the Cobra website are either unavailable or extremely limited?

I think cobra has limited quantities they sell through their web site available in order to keep their dealer network happy. I ordered through PGASS and didn’t have any issues - they arrived in less than two weeks.

This is correct. They told me this and so did Srixon. These OEMs limit the web site options so dealers are not left competing with Cobra.

They also are selling a lot of sets of the Tours because they’re a forgiving Tour-level forged iron and appeal to a lot of players.

Played my first round with a full set of the Tours and I am beyond pleased. I have both the OG ZX7s and the MKII ZX7s, which are equally amazing sets of irons, but the overall balance of looks, feel, forgiveness, and flight is absolutely top shelf with the Tours. In full transparency, I shot my best round of the year (that always plays into feeling good about your equipment), but the stability and precision of these clubs played a huge factor this morning. These are in contention for one of my favorite sets ever (and that's a big claim from a longtime WRXer).

I'd like to know this as well. The Tours are sweet, but the MIMs are affordable 😆

I never hit the MIM’s, but the tours feel fantastic. The new line is 5x forged vs the MIM process, so I could take a guess to which feel better, but you never know honestly.

For anyone that's played the Tour MIM's and the new Tours, is the feel much different?

You’ll get varying opinions on this but they definitely feel different. Not as in bad vs good, but different. I prefer the Tours as it is a classic forged feel while the MIM is solid and to some it feels soft. If you hit them back to back you can tell a difference.

Finally got these out on the course yesterday. Rain, work and a back injury has kept me off the range and course but I had an opportunity to play Innisbrook and I couldn’t pass it up even though I should’ve due to my back.

Really happy with the performance of the Tours. I was pin high most of the day. It was tough to judge my distances compared to blades but it looks like they’re 5-10 yards longer without any sacrifices on front and back dispersion. I have them bent 2° weak. I transitioned from blades to Srixion ZX5 ii but they were too hot and my front and back dispersion was not great. These seem to a great compromise between blades and players distance type clubs.

It’s been really dry here in Florida and I didn’t have any trouble holding hard and fast greens.
