Should Music Be Allowed on the Golf Course?

Forgive me for pointing this out, but music on the course seems to be an American thing! in the other countries I have played regular golf in, it does not happen (music on the course).

UK - never heard

UAE (Dubai) - never

Malaysia - never

Thailand - never

Singapore - never

So in a word. No.

I lived in southern Spain for 7 years, played music on the course every round.

Are you American? If so it might just prove the fella's point.

He's a fisherman, right now there is a chartreuse spinner bait in the water and everyone wants to get it.

Don't feed the trolls and they go away.

And, you probably don't wear your cap backwards and run around with your shirt tail hanging out. 😉

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

Hate music of any kind on the course. It's the one place I go to just have some peace and quiet.

You're literally in the middle of nature, just enjoy the sound of that. Also feels impossible to focus on a shot if I don't have the sound of impact to kind of guide me

Some people go to the park, or hiking or camping to "enjoy the sound of nature".  And some people go to the park to spend time with friends and family and play some music.  If I go camping to enjoy myself, and play some music, and someone comes walking by, hears my music and tells me to turn it off, do you think I should have to?

Golf is an outdoor activity, and for some based around friends and being social.  Music is a part of that (for some).  Playing music at respectable volumes is allowed and really shouldnt even be a discussion.

And therein lies the problem. Your definition of respectable doesn’t match mine (and a lot of others).

If I can hear it, it’s not respectable.

You are correct, our definitions don't match.

I go to the park and want to play music, someone is going to hear it.  I got to play golf and want to play music, someone is going to hear it.

It's going to happen, and those at the park looking to "enjoy the sound of nature" also understand that the park is not their privileged playground.  For some reason, many of you think the golf course is your privileged playground.  It's not.

Keep doubling down, eh ? :classic_rolleyes:

You go to the park and it's (usually) free and others are out there just enjoying nature and goofing around.

I pay $40-100 to enjoy (sometimes :classic_rolleyes:) a game that requires various levels of concentration and is played on a "park" set up exclusively for GOLFERS, not people out for a stroll or having a picnic.

And then there's also the Rules of Golf you don't care about, but I guess that's another story.

Face it my friend. You've dug yourself a hole you can't get out of. Please stop digging. You just have ZERO consideration for others - at least in this particular situation. help sos.gif

I went camping last weekend, paid $100/night to park my RV and "enjoy the sounds of nature".  Campsite next to me was a younger group, playing games and music.  The nerve of them trying to enjoy themselves.  They paid for their campsite, I should have told them to pipe down!

I dug no hole at all, the future will be on my side.  And I will continue to enjoy my music.

You are either trolling or,,,,,,, trolling.

You continue with false equivalences. You should run for office.

You know very well that an extremely important part of golf is the ability to concentrate. i.e. as little distraction as possible.

Yet you keep bringing up places where music is no issue trying to support your pov.

And continue to ignore the ROG as well.

But by all means, keep trolling. :deadhorse:

Sadly I think you are right - at least in the US.

Other parts of the world seem to be rejecting the music on the course thing far more, but in the US, Driving a cart, drinking and listing to music are gaining prominence.

That's the thing, I don't think it is sad.  While golf here (in California) is booming now (post Covid), it is a game that is dependent on evolving to attract the newer generations.  A sport/hobby cannot sustain off of older generations.  There are other industries that are very similar.

The good news is, golf does seem to be evolving.  Tiger Woods legacy, Rickie Fowler, Phoenix hole 16 (and the other holes that are following suit), LIV, are all leaning towards those younger generations.  I go to tournaments now and there is music blaring on the driving range.  This is at pretty exclusive country clubs as well as munis.  Marketing is shifting towards brighter colors, no collars, loud and more vocal merchandise.

Music is an inevitable part of those generations, and will continue to be a part of golf.  If you really do like the peace and serenity of golf, there will likely still be courses that don't allow it or areas where it isn't as prevalent.  But overall Golf will (and needs to) keep up.  Players need to adapt, or be unhappy.

However, for the time being, bothering others is frowned upon.

R1.2a All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by showing consideration to others – for example, by playing at a prompt pace, looking out for the safety of others, and not distracting the play of another player.

Yea, another interpretation we aren't going to agree on.  Faint music from 200 feet away is not a distraction.  The same way yelling fore, and a completely unrelated group hearing it isn't a distraction.  Or driving down the cart path next to another hole isn't a distraction, even though someone might not like it.

Yelling in someones backswing, intending to distract them is a distraction.
