Should Music Be Allowed on the Golf Course?

Recommended Posts

As golf changes and newer generations of golfers are ushered into the sport, I notice more people playing music through a speaker on the golf course. I've seen a lot of heated debate on this topic and I can understand both sides of the argument, but I want to get the general consensus of the group here. Music on the course- Are you a fan?

I'm like 45%/55% for/against it. I'd prefer listening to nature, but I have gotten used to the music and don't really mind. I tried playing music from my iPhone one day when I was out walking 18 by myself, and it lasted about two holes before I shut it off. But I play with guys who have it on all the time, and it's fine as long as they don't play crap music.

In silly season like Oct/Nov in the northeast, or during fun events/men's leagues i don't have a problem with it provided the music is somewhat mainstream ....like current hits, classic rock, or gangster rap from the early 90s

I think all other times, when courses are packed and there could be real events going on. Better to not have it

If it's at an acceptable level where I can't hear it a fairway over I'm fine with that, don't care what it is either.

I personally prefer it when I’m playing solo to just go out and unwind or in events with my buddies, but don’t have to have it. My biggest issue with it is when people are playing it to loud. Last summer I was playing and the group ahead of us was playing it loud enough that we could clearly hear to lyrics from over 100 yards away. That’s kinda where I draw the line on it. If you’re close to another group, pause it or turn it way down.

unless it’s something that turns my round into a 5 hour slog, i don’t care at all what anyone else does on the course.

people would do well to care a little less about everyone else and worry about themselves.

Yes, as long as not played so loud that it's blasting across fairways.

We've played music for at least the last 5 years, not one person outside of our regular group (we occasionally have someone paired with us) has ever been bothered by it.

Rabbit ears need to be overcome, if a spider barking or squirrel farting bothers you that much, need to learn to focus more.

I've played music on the golf course for over 1,000 rounds over the past 10 years.  You will get a WIDE range of views on this, but my philosophy is...I paid to play golf, I enjoy music, I am going to play it.  Volume and type of music are dependent on the group I am playing with.  I have never once had an issue with this approach.

And there’s the problem - volume consideration not given for those outside your group.

1000% this! If you want to listen to it you do you…I don’t want to hear it at all.

Yes music should be allowed, presuming the person playing the music is considerate of others nearby.  Allowed???  ... is a strong word too.  What I wouldn't support is club mgt dictating whether music is played on the course.

That said, nearly every time I play with my wife and her friends, she/they bring speakers and plays great music, low.  If someone is standing on the tee, they can't hear our music.  However, if someone pulls up blasting their sounds, I am the first to say shut-it-down.  I don't want to hear your music.

I must have said this before here but I say it again.

Why one must play music on a golf course? Is it not enough to walk with earbuds on when going to work/school/friends/etc, listen to the car radio, blasting the music at home, having to hear abnoxious rap "music" at the supermarket and so on?

I hate sound pollution and ambient music is one element of it. Fortunately around here people come to a golf course to play golf, socialize and listen to birds sing and wind blow, nobody listens to music apart from very very few through earbuds. Maybe you do not have birds. That would be sad.
