Should Music Be Allowed on the Golf Course?

I may have missed this part, but did the rules refresh make the listening to music legal, or was it made more blurry?

Look here:

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

... Interesting take since you seem to think YOUR  respectable level means others on an adjacent fairway that prefers to hear the sounds of nature with no music at all don't get to experience the course THEIR way.

... When I played once our twice a week I preferred no music when playing. But semi retired now and playing 5 days week, I enjoy music with my remote cart but played at a level only I can hear. when walking beside it, and it can't be heard while on the tee box or on the green. One of the main problems with music, aside from respecting those that want none at all, is I don't wanna hear Heavy Metal, Rap or Country and others may not want to hear my 70's Classic Rock. So keeping music at a level only you can hear is the considerate thing to do so everyone can enjoy the course the way they want.

I was perfectly content to let others fight this out, but I had to respond to your ridiculous post, now I'm all fired up. You have the nerve to include Country with heavy metal and rap? That's un-American.

Geez, get a clue.

Kind Regards,

Garth

... LMAO, you may remember my station changed formats from Top 40 and I worked a full year as the afternoon drive DJ at a Country radio station in Chicago before finding a shift at another rock station. So I earned that right Y'all.  😇

  • 1 month later...

I was playing in a better ball two-day event over the weekend. Country Western booming from one cart and 90s rock from cart #2. Honestly, it got under my skin and I lost focus on a number of shots. It seemed to me that the music was a lead in to constant conversation while people were playing. Again, it got under my skin as I was trying to post a good number. I know, I know, I’m an old man yelling at kids to get off the grass.

just experienced the same thing.  music doesn't bother me on the course.  2 carts playing music is stupid and makes me wonder if theres something wrong with the brain of the person who feels the need to setup a speaker when someone else in the 4some already has one going.

It completely depends on the group, course, type of round being played, etc.

Golf is the single most "versatile" game in the world.  It can be everything from a single person activity done at dusk to an Olympic-level event.  As such, there aren't going to be very many "rules" that apply across the board.

I don't really mind music when I'm part of a group because it's consistent. But, it can get annoying when it's loud enough in another other group because it can be quiet and then all of a sudden you start hearing music while you're about to swing.

Reading some of these comments made me think....those who are vehemently opposed to music on the course seem to show signs of those who will never let another group play through, think they rented the course for personal use for the day, and plumb bob a 2ft putt.

If you want consideration, you have to be considerate.

This issue can't be resolved here, and it's hard to even amicably discuss, because what happens on here regarding music is not what happens out there.

Next time, just stand on the tee while they are hitting and sing "God Bless America".  They will get the point.

I would define consideration as not imposing my music on others.  If I force you to listen to my music, that is not being considerate.  And music has nothing to do with playing through.

Really for me it will be course dependent, in my men's league at the short little muni course I'll usually play music depending on our mood. I played at a rural course this past week while traveling for work, walked alone, evening tee time, no one really around me so the speaker came out and I turned it up a bit more than normal but still couldn't hear it more than 20-25 yards away so no chance anyone else heard it.

I know this is a mixed topic, I kinda enjoy it on solo rounds where it's not serious or scramble tournaments. It's good at times to just hum or sing along while walking down the fairway or into the rough especially solo. But I've also played nicer courses this year and we have never considered playing music while there.

The guys who say they only play their music loud enough for their group to hear are the smokers who tell you they always clean up their butts. The music thing is the horse out of the barn, the me me me generations contribution to golf. And for those who say  if you don t like go private, you are right. I did, music forbidden, and it’s properly quiet

So played a course local to me and they got new carts. Part of them is a GPS system, ordering food and drink, and pace of play. They also had the option to pair your phone to the cart speakers. I tried it and was pleasantly surprised. It had some type of noise max as to not bother others (well most others, can't please 100%)

Two things I have found to be true.

Some players do get annoyed by hearing music from someone else's cart regardless of the volume level.

I have never encountered anyone who ever complained about not hearing someone else's music playing.

I'm just not a fan of it, but I have come to live with it for the better part and thankfully I don't encounter it all that much.

A good number of people are sensitive to intrusive noise in places that are generally quiet like a golf course and find it unpleasant.  I’d say music on the course should be banned.

So should airplanes, gas powered carts, barking squirrels 😆

Yeah, bring on the music!!  I don't mind it at all, talking, music, joking, whatever......I don't care one bit, doesn't impact my game one way or another.  I don't need perfect quiet, calm in order to hit a silly golf ball.  I like the scene at Phoenix Waste Management, 16th hole par 3 with the raucous setting.  I want more of that!!!

It seems like it's always the guys listening to awful country music are the ones who think the entire course wants to hear it.   In the last few years I only once heard a group blasting AC/DC and another blasting rap earlier this year (white guys on a golf course listening to gangster rap gave me the best laugh)  I'm all for music on the course, but once you're about 5 steps away from your cart, it should barely be audible.   Slayer doesn't hit the same at that level, but at least I know I'm enjoying my thing without forcing anybody else to enjoy it.
