7 wood replacement for windy days

Recommended Posts

does anyone do this/is this too excessive? I'm currently enjoying my driver/4/7 wood into 4 iron set, but occasionally I play that windy 7w shot that 4 iron isn't enough and 4 wood is a bit too much and 7w just flies to the moon, how do I go about determining if I want a hybrid/utility iron? Is there a preference for most people? Trying to find some inspiration from pga witb's, but they seem to avidly avoid hybrids and go to a 2/3 iron when playing in the links course/british opens.

edit: looks like i left out some info, 7 wood is exclusively a approach shot club off the deck, and don't plan to use a driving iron off the tee.

my 7 wood carries 225 under normal circumstances, so it's into the wind and I need to carry it like 210 from the fairway, my gcquad driver ss 118 on 7i 92

I hit a tsi2 turned down a notch at and lie angle upright

Thanks for any input!

They have enough swing speed to use longer irons than we do.  I don't have a lot of swing speed but I can hit  a draw or slice for a lower shot shape instead of a high fade.  It has been really windy a couple times this season.  Last time I hit a very nice slice off the tee with driver that stayed on the fairway.  My slice is such a reliable shot that I need to consider using it more.

Chances are it is such a rare shot that most of us shouldn't carry a club just for that.  Instead, it may be better to just realize that hole is going to be a Par 5 instead of a Par 4 and take three shots to get to the green instead of two.

I'm the same ss for driver as you but higher ss for 7 iron and have a 2 hybrid in place of a fairway metal which I ditched a long time ago.  It flies higher than a driving iron but much lower than a 7 metal.  Very easy to hit despite the low loft.  The only draw back for hybrids in general is that they can go left in a hurry if you make a crappy swing or the setup/shaft is all wrong so keep that in mind.  In order to counter that, I've put lead tape on the sole, play the shaft shorter than standard length and have the Ventus Black HB which is the most stable/anti-left HB shaft I've tested.  It also keeps the spin down which is a bonus.

Do you know your peak height with 7w? I know the TXG guys talk about trying to match your peak height with your Driver SS. I'd imagine your 7wood is probably going like 140 feet in the air? Might want to look into a 3h or 4h which will fly the same distance with a peak height closer to 110 feet

I have a 3H that gets used when excess wind. My home club is windy. 7w is fantastic for approaches to a few par 5 and why I love it but if it’s blowing flight down with the 3H.

One can play the 7W back and hood it a bit but at that point bring out the 5w. 😀

Yeah I agree, 2H/3H seems like the obvious first choice. Super easy to keep down but easier to get up for stopping power than a driving iron, plus there is the versatility aspect, which they have over both FW and DI.

I definitely will find 3 iron probably too hard to hit, for you is it 3 iron too low/hard to hit?

Not at all.  I love my driving iron.  I can hit two different types of shots with it.  The one with more shaft lean which comes off low and runs out into the wind(ball more in the middle of stance) and the one with less shaft lean which launches higher and stops faster(ball in front).  With your ss you shouldn't have much of an issue getting it to launch in a good window unless you hit a low ball to begin with.

@metaldog really comes down to what creates the optimal height. 7w would be highest launch and an  iron would have the lowest trajectory (assuming loft is the same). Highest to lowest: wood > hybrid > utility > iron. I will leave a chart below on the equivalencies from @PING. I'd recommend try them all, that being hybrid, utility iron, and a normal iron. Like you said most PGA tour players around your speeds prefer a flat face utility iron/iron because it is easier to lower the trajectory through technique by hitting a knockdown because of the lack of roll on the face like hybrid has and the more forward center of gravity.

De-loft to the next notch (if possible) and see what that does for you.

I’m guessing it’s a Titleist 7W if it’s at 20.25. That’s as low as you can deloft them. You can go down 0.75 and up either 0.75 or 1.5.

For me, the overlap has always been at 3H (19*, shorter shaft) and 7W (21* and longer shaft).

Last year, I dropped the 3H after I learned how to hit a stinger with a 4H.

I remember TXG try to fit Matt in a 7 wood in the good old day.😌

They ended up going with a shorter shaft 5 wood.
