Bucket List Putter and mild disappointment

I save a little each month to put towards golf gear and today I picked up a bucket list item, a Scotty Cameron putter.

Heard so much about them and always wanted one.

 

Ended up getting a Phantom X 7.5 and really like it. But here's the disappointment. 

Velcro headcover.

 

You spend $400+ on a putter that is of quality craftsmanship and have to deal with Velcro? Why not magnets? 

I like the looks of the headcover but damn... I really don't want to have the Velcro howling on every hole.

Why does Scotty Cameron not use magnets? A replacement Scotty headcover runs close to $90 but no magnets.

 

So now I'm in the hunt for a decent looking headcover that won't be so abrasive when I pull off the cover.

Hate the Velcro. I have a new near Khombi S headcover that I have never used. Got an after market with a magnet.

They don't use magnets because they're trying to make as much money as possible. You'll probably find a magnetised cover with something you like from one of the third-party sellers.

It's a mass produced product they're trying to make as much as possible on that product like @chip75 they don't care if the headcovers suck cause people will then buy the more expensive ones they have.

 

If you really want to you can sew magnets in and the problem is solved but this is across all OEM's and even many boutique putters makers. Not all offer magnetic covers and if they do some are just awful like the smallest magnet possible.

I think I have Stroke Lab and PING Vault putters with magnet covers, they're pretty decent. I have a Yes! with velcro and has its a 8802 style blade it slips in without ripping it open!

 

You can get velcro straps with magnets on them, might be worth a cheap fix. If you can remove the velcro from the headcover you can get magnets discs with adhesive.

Always find these complaints hilarious. Wear it out and get on ebay new in a few years for like 50 bucks. "You pay to play" try looking at his custom release covers. Lol

My odyssey versa 7 and OG 7 are magnetic

Yep. Already shopping for a third party headcover with magnets.

 

Just found it odd. Before this purchase, my putter inventory is Ping and all their covers use magnets.

Figured if Ping went the extra bit to use magnets, so would Scotty Cameron. 

 

Velcro isn't a deal breaker but whenever I decide to retire the Scotty, it'll have a mint headcover.

All odyssey putters and I think ping as well are currently magnet, so they could do it, if they wanted to. The other reason I have heard, which may just be BS, is that the tour players don't like it for their carbon putters getting stuck to it.

Congrats on the putter...dont worry about the cover too much. Just enjoy the stick!

The Ping PLD Oslo was a strong contender, but I already have a non-PLD Oslo in the rack. 

I've always wondered what all the fuss was about Scotty Cameron putters and have to admit, I did like the feel.

So took the plunge.

 

I figure in a month or so, I'll run it dry of good putts and go back to the Pings while the Scotty recharges.

I prefer Velcro on my putter cover but maybe just me. No one puts magnets on golf gloves that I’m aware of. Maybe Velcro is not all that bad.

Get a Ping Core putter cover  off their website for $35. Magnetic and durable. The added benefit is it is not as attractive to thieves. 
( I play a lot of public course golf, including at some down on the heels munis, and Scotty covers are a magnet for thieves. )

I googled "high strength magnet" for you ... e.g. Make friends with a seamstress (or DIY) to get these sewn into your headcover, to replace that nasty velcro?

I use aftermarket headcovers on pretty much all my applicable clubs. I don't feel like advertising for a company that isn't paying me, plus most of the time I like them better anyway. Also, people tend to overvalue clubs like Scotty and the headcover screams steal me if left out of sight for too long depending where you play.

Should be trivial to sew two patches (covering the velcro) with magnets. Can't image this would cost more than $25 at any tailor. 

 

Edit: I assume there's some sort of magnetic velcro tape you can buy that would bypass any need for new stitching

Cameron would do a lot of things differently if people would stop paying top dollar for every derivative product they roll out. They have zero reason to change when people salivate over their new releases as if they're something special.

I've had several magnetic putter covers and had the magnet migrate in between the layers.

Velcro is the (smart) way.

Makes sense. Haven't heard of many clubs being stolen in my area, but no need to tempt fate.

Picked up a Bazooka Joe headcover today. Problem solved.

 

Now I just have to figure out if I like the smaller Scotty grip or do I replace with a thicker alternative.

Almost feels blasphemous to cut off the original grip (have never been able to remove a grip intact).
