Leona Macquire bag setup - perfect for most of us?

Looks good to me. I have built my bag to fit what I need, and it definitely would be considered an odd setup.

D1-~8.75°

D2-~12°

19° 3hyb

4-5hyb

5-aw Cleveland Launcher xl's

56°

The Launcher xl's are made to be a combo set, and when I'm swinging well there's some overlap with the middle of the bag, but the 5i works well for a punch out club and isn't unhittable.

Nothing at all wrong with that--- if it works it works

I’m like you and will probably go back to carrying a 56/12 and then a 58/4.  Not much of a loft difference but I don’t have a comfort with either a 54 or 60.  And my GW is already a 51.

Looking for a 7-wood

A 5-hybrid to be determined

T300 7 - 9

AP2 PW

Vokey 54* SW

Putter

Thinking of trying a T200 7-iron to see how those would work

just get the 7 wood & 5 hybrid done with a G425, would be an excellent option, they are still available. regarding "T200" think about a single one for the 6-iron gap (if that distance is even desired/needed). my 100% recommendation is if you are currently satisfied with the T300 in that 7 - 9 iron, then leave them alone

I like this a lot.  I've often wondering if amateurs can go whittle it down even more than this to minimalist bags without really hurting scores too much.  Something like:

Driver

17* fairway

22*/23* hybrid

27* hybrid

35* iron

45* iron

56* wedge

Putter

I started the year using 11 - my scores did't change - probably improved, in reality

I find myself playing more to a specific yardage(using full 14),  instead of general 1/3rds of greens from 165yds +

Regardless, scoring is about putting  & proximity(length - for those of us yardage challenged)

I have a G425 7-wood and 5 hybrid, and I do not like them.

I counted out that going 5* loft increments would get you at 10 clubs + putter.  Realistically could probably get away with 9 + putter if you remove the LW.  I can't imagine needing more than that.  Hmmm, maybe the 2024 experiment.

ok. I'll suggestion taking both heads off and loft them up. and then try them again. peculiar a G425 5 wood is gtg and those other 2 aren't. hmm, such is golf equipment.

My 5-wood is a G25, and it isn't going anywhere.  It is the best club in my bag.

I'm going to try a Titleist hybrid with a heavier shaft than the stock Ping.

6-club tournaments are a common format for club events and amateurs typically shoot their average 14-club-bag score.

If the PGA Tour held a 6-club event I expect Tour pros would do the same.

@pga43 Are you able to share further insights from Leona's WITB

... I browsed your Arkansas LPGA WITB photos (with much thanks!), but didn't find any specific Leona Maguire album (which doesn't mean you didn't take a peak in her bag/ some photos? i.e. maybe i missed it / saved in the 'general WITB" posts somewhere?)

I have always used low bounce wedges. My 56* stock was 13* and I did a trade deal on it. I ground the sole to how I want it and checking with my wedge gauges it is now 10*. The Vokey I love the f grind sole design. The way I have those wedges set up I hit a variety of shots with them. As always the lie dictates as to which one and the method I choose. Like I said loft gaps do not mean zilch to me.

I can see and respect that and you prove another important fact here---- Everyone's Swing Speed and angle of attack is different and so one has to tailor their set up to utilize that.

I am trying to get my league to do a one day thing like that. No points no handicap and no money involved. Our season for all practical purposes ends in November. I proposed it for like the first week in December. No one has shown much interest except our President. But he did tell me everyone knows I would have a huge advantage because I do it in practice rounds some. Here is my set up with the modern stuff in my signature

Driver, 7 wood, 5 , 7 , 9 irons and putter. In all honesty playing league rules on our course I shoot between 5 to 7 strokes higher than my handicap which fluctuates weekly between 10 and 12 for now

Leona Macquire was the world's best  Am, LPGA winner and the best player on the European Solheim Cup. She's not big or strong but she is one hell of a golfer and I think she has a bag setup that would be perfect for a lot of us (obviously excluding all you guys who drive the ball 300+, need xxxx stiff shafts and still want to play a bladed 2 iron)

Fairway Woods:

Hybrids:
  Ping G425 (26, 30 degrees)
Irons:
  Ping i210 Irons 7-PW

I currently play, D,5W,7W,5-PW and have some odd gapping's in the setup, I've looked at the clubs I use the most and the type of shots I need to hit and like the look of this setup that Leona has. I'd drop the 3 wood but other than that it looks pretty good to me.  What do you lot think?

I think it is brilliant and just noticed a WITB with Azahara Munoz that is very similar. I know Munoz hasn't been making headlines lately, but she is still a hella good player. My current longest iron is 5, but I could easily take that down lower. The creation of hybrids that don't hook have been a game changer.

I think this is actually a great way to play. Seems like fewer clubs with larger gaps would really eliminate indecision, which may or may not be a problem for me.

A similar bag (see signature below). I've tried a Ping G25 7W, but not with much success. If I can find a G425 cheap (being left handed doesn't help). A winter project is to work up 7-PW set with 5° gaps (30-35-40-45) then 50-56 wedges. If I didn't have a 195-200 yd Par 3 on my home course, I wouldn't carry the 3W (Ping SFT is 16°, so more like a 4W). Fewer clubs can help clear the mind when standing over a ball.

I never saw her as I was only there Tuesday and Wednesday.  Since it was aFriday start some of the bigger name players didn't show up until Thursday afternoon.

Sorry.

I'll be honest: I still want to play a bladed 2-iron.

But....I know that I 1) don't have the swing speed anymore, 2) am not good enough to hit a bladed 2-iron consistently, and 3) was never good enough to hit a bladed 2-iron consistently.

That said, the few good shots I hit back in the day with one make me still wish I could hit one, even if I wasn't guaranteed success...😂

LOL the other week I was messing around in the 9& Dine and playing golf with my wife. I played my vintage stuff including my persimmon woods. I hit the 2 iron a couple of times because to me the whole thing is kicks and giggles. Now back in the day I could hit a 2 iron. LOL I do not have a lot of SS anymore but I did hit it about waist high around 175 yards.

I would happily walk to the first tee with that bag and not be worried about having the “wrong” club for any situation.  Same with Munoz’s bag.

My top end is similar with driver, 4 wood (or high launch 3), 7 wood, 4 hybrid and then 5 iron.  I have stuck with this formula for a few years having initially carried 3 and 4 hybrids and no 7 wood.

I suspect I shall have a similar set up for a long while.

I loved seeing all the LPGA player bags recently as I have long believed they generally have a set up that is more aligned to what I would play.
