The Putter You Didn’t Want to Like

Recommended Posts

Thought this would be a fun topic. What’s a putter that you didn’t want to like.. for whatever reason.. brand, price, looks, feel, etc. that just worked so well for you that you eventually had to give in and buy or keep it.

After a few weeks of hitting a lot of putts with the new Taylormade Spider Tour Z (I work at a big box store), I decided to pull the trigger today.

It’s a bit of a hard bullet to bite considering the other putters that I’d “rather be” using in my rotation (LOL). But man the thing is just point and shoot for me.

So I thought it would be fun to hear other similar stories or situations where you ended up with a putter you didn’t think you would and what the outcome was.

This is a great topic and probably shows my narrow minded ways, because I won’t even try something if I don’t like the look of it.  So I’m sure there are clubs that I could hit great, that’ll never get a chance to show me.

Very good chance I would be the same way if I wasn’t standing around at work during the off-season picking up and trying everything to pass the time haha

Interesting topic.  Putting has definitely been a struggle over the last two years and its been a "band-aid" constantly to fix.  I've noticed that my putting gets worse as the round goes on too.

I'm struggled finding "the one" and quickly realized that it doesn't exist.  However, I went through a putting lesson and learned that I should be using a putter with toe hang compared to the face-balanced model I've been using.  This year, I went through a Odyssey Ten, Odyssey Eleven, Verst White Hot DB, and Directed Force 2.1.  All worked well for a while, but was tired of pulling putts consistently.

Went through the putter fitting and landed on a Taylormade GTx with a slant neck and have really, really enjoyed it.  I've typically avoided Taylormade putters since I really didn't think they felt great (memories of the Nubbins & Rossa models).  Didn't want to like the GTx at all, but was surprised that it got along with me.

One of the biggest struggles is distance control, so when the AI-One came out....I was sold.  I ordered a Seven S and hopefully will have it soon.  Ended up trying it at a retailer and it seemed to operate as advertised.

I keep coming back to this one. I don't find it pretty but it is the best for me getting the ball in the hole. It has been in and out of my bag for the past 4-5 years and firmly in my bag for the past 1.5 years.

Nothing wrong with the Inovai line. Great looking putter. Nice and compact. Like a Betti version of a Ping Fetch. I’m a fan of the near-center shaft too. Don’t like it when the bore is right on the center line.

My current putter.  Ping Valor.  Kinda ugly, but I can putt very well with it.  Rolls the ball very nicely.  The only thing I did to it was send it back to Ping to remove the adjustable length shaft and put in a fixed length shaft.  34.75" with a PP62 grip.  I rolled every putter in the shop and even though I didn't like the look of it, originally, I made everything.  Had to buy it.  5+ yrs later and it's still there.

Not that I didn't want to like it, just surprised it worked out for me

Have always been a straight blade guy

Tried lots of mallets, and they've never worked out for me

Randomly tried a phantom 11.5, which I actually thought was kinda ugly when it came out, and it's been lights out

Mine is also a TaylorMade Spyder EX. Too much visual weight for my liking, but I always putt on line with it. I’ve never used a mallet consistently, but if I was playing to score, this is the putter I’d bag.

Just wondering when one would not play to score?

Scoring well is great, but it’s rarely my aim unless I’m playing in some sort of competition.

I shot my career low 80 last week, but my bag wasn’t optimized for scoring. I didn’t have a driver with me, I bagged a putter that doesn’t “suit my stoke”, and I used 20 year old mizunos.

I just play for fun.

I sort of moved on from inserts after too many impulsive buys that didn't work out. But I just love the OG Rossie, even the older models.

My mate has one that looks 20 years old, but I don't know the model age. I do however love how it feels. But I can't spend more money on putters now. I just can't. Maybe if I learn to play golf properly I deserve more golf clubs.

So ugly, but I've holed so many putts with this over the years.

I've got a throw back to a putter that was produced 20+ years ago and keeps finding it's way back into my bag. It's the Bocceri Heavy Putter A3-M. It's a face balanced, easy balanced putter that just wants to swing on line! image.png.a7a7e7f689e9274c032fcbf5e88315f5.pngimage.png.3157d790388b15ec4850d6d567684819.png

Thanks for this.  Heck yes, takes me back to the '00s.  Mine was grey, had a plumbers neck, and the neon green grip.  It was ugly, didn't feel or sound great, and lag putting took some practice, but from 8' in it was so good it was in my bag for at least 4 years.

Another blast from the past was the Ping DOC.  That thing was too big for a normal putter, but it was awesome as a broomstick!

Didn't want to love my current LAB DF, but the performance is so good, the looks fade from view.  Almost.

This topic hits home. I love anser style putters and always said I would never, ever, ever even try anything that looked like I was navigating a space ship. My thinking has always been to keep it simple and not over complicate putting.

I can be a pretty good putter, the issue is that I have to constantly practice to keep it working. A couple weeks of not diligently practicing putting and I get bad, real bad. After my last round I realized something had to change.

On order is an Evnroll 5.1

This is not something I would have ever considered but desperate times call for desperate measures. We will see how this experiment pans out.
