Tiger and Nike golf to separate after PNC? (*** MERGED ***)

Recommended Posts

All this speculation is fun but IMHO,  I’d bet he ends up wearing whatever apparel it is that TM comes out with and it’ll have the TW logo on it. Seems the easiest path at this point and I don’t think we can read that much into Charlie’s deal with Greyson as that might just be free stuff…not a paid deal.  But I guess we’ll all find out at @ The Gen Open.

Don’t know if this has been talked about - but with TM having acquired Logan Olson.

Could we see TM also acquire Greyson, or whoever it is that Woods signs with for apparel? Injecting a ton of cash to beef up marketing, distribution, and manufacturing. Or perhaps TM goes all in with Tiger to create his own line of apparel?

Agree on this. Greyson or someone like that is a better move for TM into appeal than starting from scratch and thinking TW is gonna change anything…

What about UA? Haha. They’ve sort of become a bit of a “dad” brand and might actually benefit from TW

JR Smith is a current golf representative.

Yeah, none of those guys demand the kind of money that TW would want/need.  Maybe they would offer an equity deal of some sort?  Just can’t see LuLu paying Tiger money.

I don’t see it happening, but inner marketing brain feels like that one actually sense in the spirits of a partnership and a symbiotic relationship.

Equity for sponsorship… like Federer and ON. I believe Roger has made off that than he did from Nike…

On’s stock is up 6% today so maybe there are some legs in that rumor

Not going to On, per the CEO:

Marc Maurer, co-CEO of On Running, addressed the speculation Monday at the ICR Conference in Orlando. “We also heard the rumors, so it’s always interesting what’s out there. We hope that Tiger finds a great new partner and it’s not going to be us,” he said.

I find it amazing...that people actually care about this stuff. Not knocking it...just find it odd.

I'm in a slack group with a dozen or so other gents, a couple who golf, many that play pickup hockey, softball etc.  And they watch many forms of sports on TV, but not golf.

Not a single one had any idea Tiger Woods was linked with Nike.

"Really?  Does he have his own shoes?  I thought it was all Jordans at Nike?"

"Is there a line of special TW shoes?  Looks like all the shirts are just a nike swoosh on a plain polo."

So I would comment, that except for a very low percentage of golf tech nerds, 99.999% of the people I know had no clue Tiger wore Nike, or that his contract ending is considering a big deal. And the discussion went right back to making fun of one guy's new car purchase.  30 second blip on the radar for most people.

They didn’t know Tiger was linked to Nike, that’s hilarious.  Tiger has only worn Swoosh labeled apparel for 27 years now😂🤦

Right and I think the guy that Trottie is reposting is the guy that did the vidoegraphy for the Qi10 launch videos so it makes sense that would be what he is referring to...

Also, if you were announcing a TM apparel line fronted by TW, you would not do it on the same day you unveil your new equipment, that would be cannabalizing your own PR.

My bet is tiger will be wearing the PGA Tour Line carried by PGA tour superstore. not really but the PGA has the money to pay him.

Actually, the PGA Tour doesn't have enough money to pay him. Hence the reason the are looking for investors.....but that's for a completely different thread.

TGC just confirmed Nike was exiting the golf business altogether and to look for other Nike sponsored athletes to be wearing other brands very soon.  Will be interesting to see where Scottie, Rory, Bruce and some of the others shift to.

That is exactly what Mick on The Roughcut Podcast said was going to be happening a few weeks ago.

How did they describe the "exit"? Exiting from sponsoring and focusing on their apparel and just doing Jordan, footwear and the basic clothing? Or a full, complete, exit?

Maybe the Nike Golf division is disbanding and they're not throwing huge cash at tour pros, but I don't believe for a second that the world's biggest sports apparel company isn't going to make clothes for golf.

That is exactly what is happening.  They are not going to make apparel for golf.  Nike's golf apparel business is a tiny % of their overall sales, it has been tanking, and they are cutting it.

The Jordan line of shoes will continue, with more golf-related products.

I’m sure they will still sell cheap polo shirts at Kohls, Macys etc.

You hang out with cave men. There is 0% chance your buddies were being serious. Everyone on the planet knows tiger is with nike

Better not be Greyson with their 300$shirts. Don't think tiger would do that to us normal folk.

Alright, so we're making our predictions before he comes out and tells us.

First, Tiger's dad was a Titleist guy and Tiger went his own way with Nike and later Taylormade and Bridgestone. He could've gone Titleist and I personally thought he would in honor of his late father, but he went his own way. My bet is Charlie and Tiger aren't linked at the hip on this one. Greyson was Charlie's move, doesn't mean it has to be Tiger's.

I could see Tiger linking up with an existing upstart kinda golf apparel brand. That makes the most sense. Less work. Already established. But that's boring.

Something a little more interesting would be him going to a Nike rival, like Adidas. I mean, all day he dreams about....Well, never mind. They would have the deepest pockets out of his options, but I don't really see this happening. It would be interesting though to say the least.

But what about some billionaire who's been dying to jump into the golf biz but wouldn't have any draw to their own line because they aren't established as an apparel person and they'd be fighting an uphill battle to beat out the Peter Millar's and Greyson's and the others who already exist. And then boom, they hear a rumor that Tiger might be a free agent. Talks start and the whale says he'll pump in the money, Tiger will be equal partner and the face of it, and they'll actually make quality stuff and take over a huge part of the market. The whale's dream comes true, he's successful in the golf biz. Tiger gets bragging right over his buddies and kid because his company is blowing theirs out of the water. It's the ultimate competitor move. Plus as half owner, he rakes in the cash. The company turns into the next major sports brand. This would be the exciting move. It's risky but he can afford to take the chance. Tiger's connected to a lot of athletes too. If he did it right, the thing could blow up.

Anyways, I didn't want to make a boring prediction! Go big or go home. That's his style anyways.
