Eazy to hit 3 Wood

Micrys2

Recommended Posts

So it’s been a while since I have bought a new 3 wood.  It’s fair to say not the club I am most confident in. Currently playing the Cally Epic.  I do ok with it but wanted to try something newer.  I have tried 4 woods and they just aren’t my thing.  Tries the OG Stealth 4 and the head shape just didn’t do it for me.

Wondering about the 24 current offerings.  Looking for easy to launch off the deck and good off the tee as well.

Appreciate comments of those who have tried the new stuff.  Tell me what impressed you.

Ping, and you can still get the G425s new; an outstanding club. Super easy to launch and straight. ( I actually just use a turned down 5 because I hit it long and the yardage I want for the courses I play. The turned down 5 opens a spot in the bag).
Titleist TSR2 is another good choice. Very easy to use and plenty of shaft options if you don’t prefer the stock shaft.
But all the OEMs make really great stuff…

As others have said, the Ping Max line seems to be up there as the gold standard for forgiveness in a fairway wood. The only downside with Ping (at least for me) is that they sound a but like a tin can. The Callaway AI Smoke Max felt extremely easy to hit in the short time I tested it, but I believe I was hitting a 5 wood and not a 3 wood.

Plenty of clubs and dollars invested in this part of the bag. I have been playing a 3HL Paradym X but I note your comment on 4 woods not working. Ive got off the 3w merry-go-round the last few weeks, which has coincided with exclusively playing the new AVX ball. Where am I going ... 2H & 4H as better options than 3w and 7w.

I hit mine the same distance but the hybrids are much more consistent and they produce a much tighter dispersion. Handicap has come down to 14 from 17 in that period! I know it's not the same for all, I am 6ft 4" tall, the shorter shafts just work better for me.

Went through a fitting recently. Ended up buying G430 max, but the Ai Smoke was very good too. Despite playing a gen 1 Stealth 3HL, the TM did little for me. The Cobra and Srixon were also good, but not quite as good as the Ping.

if you are after ease of launch, and don’t mind a bigger footprint, the Cleveland is also good. Just not what I was after….

Curious, why the AVX? Do they spin enough around the greens?

Enjoyed the previous version, apart from greenside spin. The 2024 AVX is much better around the green and all else is largely the same.

Know this sounds crazy, especially for this forum, but my buddy has always had issues w/3 woods. He insists on still bagging one, so the never ending search continued. We come across a mint Wilson Launch Pad 3 wood (16 degrees) at local Play it Again Sports for $40, & it even had a nice Project X  Evenflow stock stiff shaft. The guy still has issues w/the occasional slice, so the draw design wasn't an issue. That being said, it amazing how well he hits the damn thing from both the tee & deck. Certainly nothing I would play, but hey, whatever works for him is all that counts, especially considering all the cash he has dropped on failed 3 woods.

I would say anything with high launch versions, I play the Paradym 3HL (16.5*) very easy to hit, I also have the TD version, off the tee is a monster, but for me, it is a bit harder to hit off the turf, perhaps 4W could be an option, I haven't tried changing the loft at -1* to see if it is just as easy to hit off the turf, good luck.

DRIVER: Callaway AI Smoke TD 10.5*, Ventus TR Blue 6TX at 45"
3 WOOD: Callaway Paradym HL 16.5*, Diamana Flower Band White, D+ 82X Flex, tipped 1" at 42"
7 WOOD: Callaway Paradym 21*, Tensei AV white 75g S Flex, tipped 1" at 41"

IRONS: Callaway Apex MB 7-10, CB 4-6 -- DG TI S400

WEDGES: Callaway JAWS Raw 50, 54, 58 -- DG TI S400
PUTTER: SC Phantom 5, Stability Shaft, 33.25", Garsen Quad Tour grip (Toulon Chicago as back up)
BALL: Callaway CT X (current gamer), Srixon Diamond, -ProV1X and ProV1

Ping is the easy answer in all of these threads.

Seems like this topic is THE most common one to pop up.

Agreed. Not a fan of of their drivers or irons, but I had a G30 3w that was an absolute launcher. One of my only gear regrets was getting rid of that in a quest for a little more distance. That club was so forgiving, for me anyways.

Does the 5 wood sit a bit closed like the drivers? I also play a 5 turned down, except in a Cobra LTDx (great fairway woods). I find it a little hard to square up with the open face from turning it down 1.5 degrees. But a fairway that started a little closed that becomes square when lofting it down would be great.

I would say the PING fairway woods. You cant ask for a more forgiving, easy to hit fairway wood.

I didn't like the newer ones as much as they have gotten very shallow for me, so I am still playing the G30 3 wood. It has a little deeper face and is super forgiving and plenty long.

It doesn’t look bad. I attached a couple of photos. I’m not sure those photos are useful. It’s better to look at one in person.

So I ended up going and getting fit. Tried the Pings, TM, and Cally’s.  Ask about the Cobra’s and Titleists as well.  Much to my surprise, the Cally triple diamond beat out everything.  Best distance, best dispersion.  Could have thrown a blanket over the shots.  Never would have dreamt a TD for a 72 yo gentleman with an approximate ss of around 95 mph, but it was just too good of stats to pass up.  I usually have no problem off the tee, it’s the turf that I struggle with.  The sim is never the same as the grass so I will be interested to see if this works there as well.  Fingers crossed.
