Shipley and Tiger

Sounds like the name of a movie, huh?!

 

I just wanted to make a side note to the big Masters discussion by throwing up a soon to be lost thread for a minute to acknowledge that Shipley, the amateur (like us.. 100% of us), got rewarded by the golf god, Augusta, for being the only amateur to make the cut with playing the final round of the 2024 Masters Tournament with Eldrick “Tiger” Woods, in RED & BLACK. I mean, seriously??? What a true gift this young man has been dealt. 
 

Shipley just spied Tiger Woods tee to green #10 like a five time champ. What an amazing day for Shipley. Then he has to sit next to the faker John Rahm later on. That can add some humor to Shipley’s yarn about 4/13/2024.

Interesting tidbit I just saw online: apparently after his round Shipley faced the media and after the typical questions about his day, a reporter mentioned he had seen Tiger hand him a piece of paper as they were leaving one of the greens (#8 IIRC). Shipley denied it. The reporter said that he saw Woods hand him a piece of paper with his own eyes. Shipley denied it again. At that point the session with the press was ended. Odd.

Loved Shipley's shirt with what looked like a big "Golden Bear" on it. I'd love to hear the story behind that choice or if Tiger mentioned it.

That exchange in the interview room was so odd, he looked at the green coat like "wtf do i say?"  Then in Butler Cabin while Ridley or Nantz was talking to him, he kept looking out of the corner of his eye towards the camera. Maybe he's just a little bit of awkward kid to begin with, i dunno

That was a weird exchange at the end of that presser.  My first reaction was the tampon thing that Tiger pulled on JT a few years ago, and if something like that did happen, I can see why the green coats would be quick to hush-hush it.

The Butler Cabin interviews are always super awkward. Almost felt like Shipley was making an inside joke for his friend’s amusement. He was absolutely hilarious when Jon presented Scotty with the green jacket. My girlfriend must have played it back like four times. He just had no idea where to go poor guy.

The whole Butler Cabin presentation is just weird.  A stilted, awkward, scripted, nervous moment.   And the obligatory question and comment from the Chairman and syrup from JN.   Why bother just for a tv moment, when the real presentation is on the GC a few minutes later? I’d bet most of the CBS viewing audience has lost interest and tuned out  before the Butler Cabin moment and the dedicated golf fans will switch to GC as soon as they can for the commentary and can watch the outdoor presentation there.   
 

And the past champion usually doesn’t know how to hold the jacket properly so the winner can “slip” into it.   🤷🏼‍♂️ It would take all of 1 minute to train them.

My wife and I kept it on to watch it, solely to see Shipley LOL.  That dude is great.  We're also from Columbus originally and love seeing Buckeye's do well.

then again I think there’s many things about that tournament that seem very old man boys club.

 

like why does “the chairman” get so much respect like he’s some god among men? What has he done in life of any significance other then being in charge?

Well other than winning the US Amateur in 1975, the last US Amateur champion to never turn professional; serving as President of the USGA in 2004; playing on a winning Walker Cup team in 1977; captaining the Walker Cup team in 1987 and 1989; being chosen to follow Billy Payne as Chairman of Augusta National in 2017; being a partner at Foley and Lardner, one of the largest commercial real estate law firms in the country; and having a head of hair that has it’s own Instagram account (@fredridleyshair), not much, I guess…

I wonder if it was not televised whenever they first started the Butler cabin deal

Honestly it's the single worst thing in professional golf IMO. 😂

It takes all the worst and most awkward aspects of professional golf and the goofy people in it *cough*Nantz*cough* and presents them in the most forced possible way.

And what makes it more awkward is how the past champ -- Rahm, this year, just sits there awkward and quiet then just puts the jacket on the new champ.  They should at least have the past champ say something, anything.
