I don't have too much issue with the grasses but if they're "native" why would more need to be added?  And, it's visually unappealing,  imo, relative to more sand and less plants.

One of my favorite courses is Poppy Hills, which is very similar to this course by design, with minimal rough and lots of waste areas with native grasses everywhere, but a much higher sand to grass ratio.  Your bad shots can still find some difficult to unplayable situations, but it’s much less random in that most of it gets worse the worse your shot is relative to the center of the fairway.  Not only that, it is much more visually beautiful than looking at just a sea of grass plants 12” apart for 300 yards, IMO.  To each his own though.

The crying over Scottie's putter toss is amusing.  I remember Jack Nicklaus throwing his putter a mile in the air on the 18th green at the Old Course and almost beaning his fellow competitor.  And the greens at Pinehurst are firm enough at this point that Scottie's little toss isn't hurting anything. Get a grip people.

We’ve all played with guys like Hatton and it is a miserable experience. Everything sucks and they’re incredulous at everything that isn’t a perfect break. It’s grating.

Of course, it’s especially irritating when the guy sucks and you’re left wondering “what did you expect would happen?” for every tantrum. That is a material different from the Hatton experience.

Soon they’ll have to wear helmets!

Besides loving the look of the native brown and sand, the native grass is actually more fair or at least exciting than the typical 6-8” Oakmont or Winged Foot rough. There a player uniformly has no shot other than a sand wedge out.

Here, sometimes a lucky lie results, or better yet, a semi-good lie tempting the pro to go for it!

This was my thinking as well. Missing the fairway in a US Open has always been penal. If anything, this provides more opportunity for a cleaner lie that someone typically wouldn't have out of thick rough. And if you get stymied by wire grass, it's similar to a ball sitting down in the rough (at least in terms of losing 0.X strokes to par).

Taylor Pendrith -4 on today’s round after 10 holes.  Course isn’t playing that tough. Stop with the whiners.  Quite a few other guys under par as well.

So if they put evenly spaced holes our there in the rough where half the balls stayed on hard dirt and the other half fell through a hole and ran back to the teebox, you’d be okay with that level of randomness in a round of golf?

You understand that there are degrees of randomness that can be introduced into a golf course from minor to ridiculous, right?

This course introduces very high degree of randomness, both in the rough and the greens, relative to other courses.  That’s all I was saying.  And yes, to a point, that’s golf.  To a point.  I love steep penalties for missing fairways (and would love it if the native grass was everywhere in the rough), but not as big a fan of the rough and greens being Russian roulette.  It’s great to watch for entertainment value though.

Is everyone playing the same course? If so, I literally do not care what they do. At the end of the day, the golf ball doesn't move on its own. The player ultimately dictates where the ball goes whether they are in control of it or not is what decides a golf tournament. You could always just hit it to a different spot, different shot shape, different trajectory, etc. There is always a different outcome had the shot been different. That's golf man.
