Well, tried it in the garage under very poor lighting, which was a no go, so took it to the range, again, no use, even with shutter speed of 1/250 - total blackout!

So initial impressions are slightly dissapointed, I thought it would be average under poor lighting but not a washout.

I'm on the practise course tomorrow, will no doubt be overcast/dull due to UK weather - will be interesting to see if I can use the slow mo, if not its going back as I can get a better HD camcorder.

You shouldn't get a blackout if you are using the camera outside. I have used mine under poor floro lights at 1000 fps and could still make out what I was filming albeit the images were very dark. Check your aperture settings, the higher the number the more light you let into the camera. You need to experiment with the settings to learn what works best, start at 210 fps, aperture at f7.9 and shutter at 250 and shoot 15 seconds or so of video, then change the settings and shoot more and so on. It's a bit time consuming but you will soon get a feel for what the camera can do in different light levels.
Hope this helps.

That does help - it was better outside admittedly and I'm going to try that advice later on - thanks for that.

I bought the FC100 last week. I tried to shot video in the Golf Dome at 210 FPS but the video was very dark, grainy, and had several flashing lines. I tried a few videos in my home with the same results. I bought a Class 10 SDHC card so that can't be the problem. What settings does everyone use for video indoors vs video outdoors?

Thanks!

I have the cheaper Casio FS-10 ($150). For some reason, it is not that popular, but I take video just fine at 210 FPS outdoors. Even on a cloudy day, you should be fine if you're filming outdoors. You must use this outdoors because the shutter will, at a minimum be open for 1/210 second (for the 210 FPS setting) and usually only outdoor lighting will be bright enough. High speed shooting and poor lighting are not a good combination. For what it is supposed to do, it works great. Example:

<object width="400" height="300"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=9627822&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1" /><embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=9627822&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="400" height="300"></embed></object><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/9627822">7i face on view feb 20 2010</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user2261242">Hien Pham</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>

Dark & grainy is normal for indoor shooting at 210 fps. Just not enough light. The flashing lines are probably from florescent lights which flicker at 60 hz. (incandescent lights don't flicker). Kind of the same effect as trying to film your TV screen at 210 fps.

It's not really that usable indoors. The flashing lines are probably due to the lighting inside (do they use flourescents? Those flicker 60 times a second). I generally stick mine in HD mode and "suffer" with that for a couple of months until I start hitting balls outside. Otherwise I take the video and stick it in a processor to brighten it up. Still is grainy and looks like hell, but you can see what's going on.

I will say, though, that the sensitivity of the camera is way better than my Canon Digital camcorder that i used to use. I couldn't even use that indoors at 30fps. The Casio looks just find indoors in HD or SD mode.

I posted this in another thread, (thought I was in this one...):

Assuming you have 4 gig free on your card, here are the record times for one "scene" for the FH20. You can record longer than these times, just not in one take.

SD: 56:12
HD: 18:58

210 FPS: 11:26
420 FPS: 11:26
1000 FPS: 22:44

You might wonder why these odd times are chosen, and it's completely dependant upon a 4 GIG file limit for the FAT file system. A file system is basically the index of files on a disk/card/hard drive. It's a 32-bit file system, and 2 ^ 32 = 4,294,967,296, or 4 gig.

You might also think that as the frame rate goes up, the record time should go down. However, with the FH-20, the resolution decreases as the frame rate goes up, so the amount of data saved for the same period of time is the same for 210/420 fps, and actually less for the 1000fps setting.

I think that these Casio hi-speed cams are great for observing the golf swing. I have the FH20, and on a bright sunny day at 210fps, Manual settings of F4.4, 1/800, and ISO of 100 works great for me. For less bright conditions, I open the aperture more to F3.4 or less and drop shutter speed. Shutter AE works fine also at settings of 1/250 and above.

you know that the casio ex-fh100 will be out soon right? backlit (which is GREAT) sensor and high zoom will be thrown in and there's really nothing wrong with that.
hope this helps

That should help. Here's info on how those work for the geeks like me out there:

Here's some info on the newest high-speed Casio that Zlim mentioned, the FH100:

Casio FH-100 First Impressions

This could easily be the best of them- small enough to be carried in a pocket yet much better specced than all the previous pocketable ones- this one carries a 10-x zoom which starts at a very wide angle (24mm-240mm equivalent) which is also pretty bright (f3.2) for this size. Battery life should be also excellent.

The wide zoom is a life-saver when space is tight; it is also extremely useful in 'regular' photography, especially for street and/or landscape shooting.

Looks like another winner from the Casio high-speed line... I'll have one in my pocket once it is out :)

P.S.: I am in no way involved with Casio; I am just a photo enthusiast who just happens to have owned two of their cameras (among quite a few others as well) and have only good things to say about them.

There is an alternative to the Casio FH100.

The about to be released Samsung TL350.It can also do up to 1000 fps and has a back illuminated sensor. It can also film 1080p video and has a 3in OLED display.

I am in the market for a new camera also and it's a toss up between these two.I will probably go with the Casio as they already have years of experience making high speed cameras but it this will be Samsungs first attempt.

Ooo, those are pretty impressive specs!

It'll do 240fps in 608x342 (16:9 ratio) or 240fps in 320x240 (strange difference there).

Couple of the plusses for this camera is HDMI output. It's really a competitor to the FH20 since it has full manual control. Two minusses would be only a 5x optical, and 3" screen( vs 3.5").

Doesn't FH100 have HDMI & full manual?

No. You have to go up to the FH20 to get full manual, and the F1 to get HDMI output.

Yup...full manual and mini HDMI output. The Casio fh100 also has a 3" display but not OLED.

It's a toss up.Pluses for Casio...10x zoom,120 fps and experience making high speed cameras.Pluses for Samsung...full 1080p video,OLED lcd display,720p 60fps.

I would still favor the Casio due to the fact that this is their 3rd generation high speed camera. It will be the first for Samsung so there might still be a few bugs.

I think you have mistaken the FH100 for the FC100.

The FH100 is a new model about to be released sometime this month. It has amazing specs also. The only thing missing is 1080p.

Correct me please if I'm wrong, but it appears the difference between the new FH100 and new FH25 are: 1) FH25 has f2.8 vs. f3.2, 2) FH25 is 17 ounces/no batteries vs. 8 ounces with batteries for FH100, and 3) bulk?

Yes,but I was comparing the Casio EX FH100 with the Samsung TL350.

The Casio EX FH25 is a wonderful camera also but is limited by it's bulk.It would be a bit awkward to take this camera to play 18 holes.

The FH100 and TL350 are much smaller.

Does anyone know the exact release date for the FH100? I've been looking at buying the FC100 but thought I might wait until the FH100 came out in case there was a price drop on the older model. Thanks in advance.

Prices have dropped already. You can even get the Casio EX FC150 for about 280 on ebay.

i agree, why wouldnt you guys just get the casio fs-10? the video quality is exactly the same as the fc100 and much much cheaper...

btw - stop recording slow motion indoors in poor lighting conditions, u'll never see anything -- that is unless you have flood lights inside ur house? slow motion is meant to be shot in very well lit conditions!! black%20eye.gif

Are the FC100 and FS10 pretty similar? The FC100 is around $200 and the FS10 $140 on Amazon. All I really want the camera for are still shots of nature when I am out golfing/hiking or taking pictures of clubs to put up on the BST. I do want to be able to take videos of my swing in the 210/420 FPS and that is a huge selling point of this camera selection. I will occasionally take it to a indoor/outdoor sporting event. Will I be better off buying the cheaper FS10 or should I go with the FC100?
