why don't more people play using the Gary Player walk thru

I do this when I need to hit an iron 20-30 yards farther (normally a trouble shot over a tree).

Interesting. I am definitely SHORTER with the step-through.

Do you have a rotary swing? Does b.mattey have a weight shift swing? Could the swing mechanics explain the difference? Pure speculation on my part, since I don’t know.

I use the Ballard swing method. If you aren’t famiiar, this is a weight-shift swing with more lateral motion and less rotation than a rotary swing. If I am using Ballard and I don’t get a really strong weight shift I don’t get any ball speed. If b.mattey has a weight-shift/lateral motion swing like I do, and needs extra distance, the easy way to get it is to shift the weight harder, and the walk-through promotes a strong weight shift and not hanging back on the right side, that is the point of it, really.

BTW it sounds as though you have significant back issues, which is what got me to the Ballard method, and it has made a world of difference for my back. With a more rotary swing I was holding my head back and hitting into a reverse-C which eventually just killed my back. Ballard teaches letting it all go, into an upright finish with zero stress on the lower back at the finish. I am 74. My back died about 5 years ago. I changed swing mechanics. Now my back feels 100% better and I am hitting the ball great (much straighter, just like you when you do the walk through) and scoring as well as ever, 5 handicap. I don’t do the walk through when I am playing, unless I am having trouble getting to my front foot becaue I normally get to my front foot just fine. Ballard teaches 100% weight on front foot at finish, so the walkthrough is pretty easy to accompish for Ballard type players when they are having problems - you either get your weight shifted strongly or you don’t walk.

they would if they could../most amateurs are so stuck on the trail foot with all the weight there through the swing...they can only walk through after follow through...too late.

Soooooooooooooo many amateurs hit off the back foot and hang back.... Scoopy, scoop. Such a disaster. Everyone wants to help the ball into the air.

I used to battle it every day when I taught years ago.

How can you teach it when most golfers don't even transfer their weight to the right side.

My dad's getting older, and as a longtime baseball player, tends to get caught on his back foot like Prince Fielder. I taught him this and he gets through the ball better and more balanced. However, he does get carried away with it at times.

George Peper, a log time editor of  Golf magazine, wrote that Player  adopted this method after noticing, during a series of exhibition matches ,  how Billy Caspers  rear foot/leg  used to slide through impact.   Player decided to copy it to reduce stress on his  lower back which was causing him problems at the time.

Obviously, this is a good drill recommended by many teaching pros. For people that have trouble effectively getting to the left side, this drill is like magic. If you walk through the shot, the weight has to transfer. I was trying this at an indoor range and it was solid shot after solid shot. Then I wondered, why don't people ever take that to the course. I know Gary Player has done it, but I have never seen a single other person take a controlled step after the shot, including players who really hang back.

Other than the potential of not looking "right", would there be a downside from a pure performance standpoint of walking through the shot?

I have more counterbalance and better brakes than Gary.

…and on a poor idea, a whole litter.

One day, golfers will come to the conclusion that anomalies are just that and doing what 90% of the players do is a better path to better golf.

Less we copy what the 115 year old woman in Mexico credits to her longevity.  Smoking 30 cigarettes a day and more when she doesn’t feel well.

The step over as a drill in extreme cases can help a few golfers, but that shift is WAAAAAY too late.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

I think the drill Player was acttually trying to do was the rear foot /leg slide  , with the 'walk through' just  to keep his balance at the end ;   I think  a lot of good players do that to some extent or other ?  thoughts on that ? thanks

Yes, in the past I found that if I tried to do a rear post late shift swing it would cause me to do the step through to keep from falling over I guess.  Too late for sure!
