Bourbon

New here and thought I would revive this thread. I am a serious bourbon snob. I have about 30 bottles horded in my closet. Yes I have some Pappy bottles hidden.

To answer the above question, Evan Williams single barrel vintage is probably my favorite. It does vary from year to year and 2014 bottling is a little sweeter than prior years. I have had better bourbons but not for $26!!! The 2011 bottling was the best ever!
Maybe it is a mental thing but I have more enjoyment from drinking a bottle that I paid less than $30.

90% of the time I drink it neat. The other %10 is split between Old Fashions and Manhattans.
I am all about value bourbons. There are some great bottles out there for less than $25.

I've only had a couple scotches, but they are decent ones from what I understand (macallan 12 and 18, and another I can't remember the name of). I just can't get into it. The aftertaste borderline makes me gag. I love bourbon though!

Haven't tried the hibiki yet. Had the pleasure of trying yamazaki 12. Enjoyed it. Very smooth.

As for bourbon, recently picked up a bottle of woodford reserve. Really good. Want to try blantons next.

Picked up some E Craig Barrel Proof - 4th release I believe - very tasty - needs a cube or a drop of water since it's got a high proof. Lots of sweet goodness with a bite.

  • 1 month later...

I'm sad to see this thread so far down!

I picked up Rough Rider double oaked bourbon and really enjoyed it.

I've been making lots of manhattans with Rittenhouse Rye and Dolin vermouth (and a variety of bitters).

Sadly, I've been drinking more bourbon and playing less golf... very little time and too much stress recently.

I tried the woodford reserve on the way back from a golf trip a few months ago and fell in love with it. Very good and smooth!!

That last line rings true here as well. I wish I was trying some bourbons for the first time but my state only has been allowing very over priced bottles into the market. I have a coworker on his way to Nashville and he said he will bring back a few bottles. I recall enjoying Larceny when in South Carolina, so that's one. Any other ideas would be great. I look for value in the dollar. Ancient ancient age 10 year may be another if it's easily found.

Ancient Ancient Age 10 is gone forever, sadly... amazing value bourbon. I just finished my last bottle.

What state do you live in? There are always SOME options, though they might be overpriced.

Evan Williams Single Barrel is definitely a good pour. I need to buy it again.

My cabinet always has the following:
Old Forester Signature - 1.75L. It's $35 in KY, and my go to mixer bourbon. I can and will drink it neat or on the rocks, but usually I make something with it. Bourbon and Ginger Ale or Manhattan are my go to options
Four Roses Single Barrel 750mL - Any time I see a bottle for under $27 I buy it. I only drink it on the rocks (or neat on occasion),
Rittenhouse Rye: 750 mL - I forgot what I usually pay... I want to say $23? This is just for mixing, I don't love ryes straight up.

I'm currently awaiting the release of Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, which comes out the beginning of September. If you want a "rare" bottle, spend the money on this one. It's a great pour and it's easy to find.

Where in Louisville are you going to be? I can recommend a store.

Elmer T Lee is a good buy.
Weller is good
Pick up a hand picked bottle of Four Roses

I'm going to be downtown near The baseball stadium. I have a bottle of Elmer right now. We get that in michigan. Weller has always interested me so I might pick that up. What's the deal with the hand picked four roses?

How is the Blantons? Have a bottle sitting at home. Going to finish the Evan Williams single barrel and woodford reserve first.

Dads 70th bday coming up. Going to treat him to a bottle of johnnie walker blue. Looking forward to it.
