Bourbon

I don't always drink bourbon but when I do..

My everyday favs are Four Roses Small Batch and Buffalo Trace.

 

I recently tried Barrell (I think it was their $80 bottle) and it was my favorite so far at that price point. 

 

I love Calumet Farm 15 year in that $140 price range. 

 

Haven't tried the really expensive ones. I prefer to buy expensive wine rather than expensive bourbon, I've found that bourbon that is 3x the price isn't 3x as good, but wine is.

Don't have a taste for high-end bourbon mainly given the expense but have enjoyed Makers, Knob Creek, and Woodford Reserve, with Makers Mark the most experienced, affordable, and readily available. At most in the past enjoyed the elixir several times a year but hardly at all now apart from using it to marinate steaks or place a teaspoon in a little coke (or tea), caffeine-free (decaffeinated), of course. Gotta observe health concerns where I can.

 

At Christmas, unfortunately no longer due to the impact that time tends to have on longevity, the men would gather in the basement to tell lies and banter about such in addition to having a drink of Makers prior to the larger festivities. All would include either water or something else with the borbon, none apparently seeking more chest hair or happy with the current growth. One year one of the women-folk, an adventurous type of a non-conforming nature, joined us and drank her cheer straight, no water, no coke, no ice, just straight. First drink one tilt, done. The second sipped - like the rest of us with our first and only. A subsequent trip to the bathroom gave confirmation and comfort to self that all was still OK.

 

Having ties to and experiences in Kentucky, it's a nice reminder to a nice place and nice times.

And don't get me started on this.... suffice to say, once you open a bottle of wine, you best finish it. It won't save long. So, that's why a single glass of wine is usually 85-100% wholesale cost of the bottle at a restaurant.

Opening a bottle of bourbon/whisky? You won't notice a difference in years (as long as it's stored properly). There is NO REASON a finger pour from a bottle that's been opened should be even 25%-50% of the bottle (which many places do). I've seen some rares be almost 75% the bottle cost wholesale. Absurd. It's not wine.

I highly recommend the distillery tour at Bardstown Bourbon Company. I give them a lot of credit for having the patience to wait for a 6-year product to release as their own (Origin series). Fusion #9 will be their last Fusion release for six years if I remember correctly.

And in the spirit of full transparency, that’s a small part of my BIL’s collection. He brings the bourbon and I cook the steaks. 🙂 I enjoy the stuff, especially this time of year, but am not a collector like he is.

I do enjoy finding the unique, “off the beaten path” delectable, though. This little treasure is from a distillery just a few miles from my house. Who knew?

prolly have to join a fb group ... i'm in a few groups and they sell stuff all the time ... we use abbreviations/images/double speak to avoid getting caught by the AI/algorithm checkers ...

Yes. I was fortunate to pickup a bottle of 10 year old Pappy for $99.00 and sold it for $600.00 in late 2022. I quit drinking in October 2022 but the place where I bought my high end bourbon said they had a bottle of Pappy for me in early December 2022.  So, since I quit drinking, I bought it and immediately sold it to a company online that then resells it for an even higher price.  As info..
