here a photo of trouser length

I can't believe that I am coming to this thread so late in the day! There are some horrendous trousers posted in here. When these guys are getting there trousers for free you think that they would be able to spend a little bit of their money to get them taken to the right fit.

The only thing I can say in their defence is that I quite often need to go a waist size up. My quads are not huge but they are not small either. If I want to get a trouser that fits round them and leaves me a little bit of space to put at least one tee I go up from a 32 to a 34. I always need to get them shortened as well. I often end up with trousers that look a little too wide at the bottom and I think some of these guys might have the same problem.

Give me pants that don't show half my leg when sitting and I'm a happy camper.

People buy pants based on how far they come down while SITTING?

(When did anyone start caring about that?)

I used to work in a menswear store, and once had a customer complain that the dress pants he was trying on were too tight in the thighs when he squatted down and did various stretching exercises. He ended up buying a pair of pants that were at least two sizes too big, but at least he had them hemmed.

That's awesome! Like looking for a Ferrari with good off-road capability. Just doesn't make any sense to me.

I absolutely do. I don't mind a slight bunch at the bottom if it means the pant doesn't climb halfway up my calf when sitting in a cart or having a beer in the clubhouse afterwards. I hate that "high waters" feeling from wearing too many hand me downs as a kid haha.

How about one that does well in the snow?

I know the feeling. As a funeral director, I need a suit that'll look good AND be usable for hauling people down stairs and such.

For anyone interested in seeing pictures of perfectly fitting golf pants, just visit the Bonobos website.

Here's an example:

All of these photos are too long. Typically the back of the trouser should hit about halfway between the sole and the top of your shoe at the heel. It should not hit the sole. The front of your trousers should touch your laces and naturally fold slightly, once, above that. This is called the "break". If you have more than one fold in the front of your trousers then they are too long.

This Brooks Brothers blog post shows what I'm saying: http://blog.brooksbr...k/take-a-break/

pants-break-0.jpg

I prefer medium break. A lot of younger guys wear suits with short jackets and no break, but I don't like that style. All of the pants posted above are longer than medium break and I think they could use a little hemming-- especially for golf, where you are walking so much.

Those are too short on the heel. 1/2" more material on the heel and it would be good and would not change the break.

I think Brooks Brothers has it right. You guys who want to touch the heel are itching to get the bottom of the trousers stuck in the heel when you walk. Trousers don't do any good piled up on top of your shoes. This covers your socks and touches your shoe, but doesn't make your feet look heavy like the full break stuff does.

1/2" more on the heel wouldn't catch and wouldn't change the break if your tailor knows what they are doing. That picture looks like the hem is straight across which is not how you are supposed to do it. But, to each their own.

not sure how this topic came up after years and years but I was like yeah I know MJones and he sure better know his stuff dealing with those buckles and Birks all day!!

Here's a picture of Jason Day with proper length pants earlier today.

Another one here:

Any longer and it starts to look sloppy.

I'd rather go too long than too short. That bonobo pic just above is too short.

Nope. It's 2017! That's the proper way to wear pants nowadays.

I already think those are too long, tbh. That must be an older photo, because not only are they a tad long, the ankle opening is much wider than the style of pants he wears now.

He went to a much slimmer cut when we switched from Adidas to Nike.
