G25 Iron Review (Low Handicapper)

Instant Offense

Recommended Posts

Well I got my new set of G25's in and played 36 with them.... I played our white tees with some members and shot the lowest 36 hole score I have ever posted and the lowest 18 hole score I have ever shot. They will not be leaving my bag again anytime soon. Admittedly a lot of it was due to my driver, wedges, and putter since the course is short (6100 or so from the tees we played today with a course rating 67), but these irons just always leave in good positions. Off the tee they are great and on approaches I hardly ever have a big miss. Almost every shot is somewhere in the green or really close. Best iron for me ever and it's not real close.

Should have asked us first?! :telephone: lol
I did!!!!!!! People keep moving the goal posts. :cheesy: . Seriously though, the G30's gave me about 2-3 mph more ball speeds in the mid/long irons, and I got all egotistical there for a while. Lol.
G30s aren't really any more expensive for a set of irons than the G25s, you just get 1 fewer club over the same distances covered with the G30 long irons being stronger and longer, i.e. 4-u in G30 basically does the same thing as 3-u in G25, so the extra cost per club is made up by needing one fewer iron. of course, you might spend more than that adding an extra FW (or wedge) with a freed up spot in your bag....

2* in some cases G25 vs 30s. It's more of a 'mental' thing for me.
OK, I hadda look.

G25 G30

P ---45 45
9 ---40 40
8 ---36 35
7 ---32 30.5
6 ---29 27
5 ---26 24
4 ---23 21

Interesting,,,,,,,,,,, 2* in the longer irons, closer in the short ones.

Wonder if the longer irons launch higher essentially giving the same distance ?

OK that's it, ordering a set.

If a plus handicap is shooting lights out with these, why shouldn't I give them a shot? Pretty sure PING engineer Marty Jertson played the G20s in qualifying and PGA championship rounds (iirc).

He did. He also played the G25 for a while. I am still selling sets of these and have only had 1 guy out of 25 or so not love them and I don't think he have them a real shot. They are just so forgiving. I know of 3 swings today that find a hollow of high grass with any other club that I own besides the G25. Instead I had 2 eagle putts and a short chip.

These stronger lofts are freaking me out, being a 'purist'. Therefore I would go with the G25s ;)

What freaks me out is that you would consider the G25's not to be strong lofts or that as a "purist" you would prefer them. :swoon:
I was talking about the diff. lofts with the G25s vs. G30s. Love the look and specs of blades, but just turned 50, not in shape enough to hit them anymore. I had G25s, but traded them for AP2s. Shouldn't have done that. G25s are so easy to hit, but my ego got in the way. I think I am in denial!?
Can there be THAT much difference between the 30s and the 25s (or the 20s for that matter) ???

As an aside I believe the Maltby Playability Factor has the G25 MORE forgiving/playable than the G30s.

Interestingly(?) enough, a salesman I talked to at a large store told me the G30s are selling MUCH better than the 25s did. :dntknw:
Wow, G25s are a good amount higher on the MPF than G30s.

Thanks for mentioning that or I never would have known!

Ok guys, here goes.

I realize this is a thread for G25 irons predominantly, but there has been a lot of talk about comparisons with G30. So I thought I would share my experience today after picking up my new G30's.

All numbers below are off mats, outside, decent golf balls, 5-8 mph left to right wind. Flightcope, onto a fairly mid/firm range

Club Ball Speed LA Carry Total

PW 101 29.2 138 145
9i 110 25.1 154 160
8i 117 19.8 166 175
7i 123 16.5 177 189
6i 126 14.8 187 201
5i 131 12.7 199 217
4i 134 12.3 208 227

These numbers are a good Club longer than I am used to. Better ball flight, high but penetrating. Fantastic feel. Far more consistent with better dispersion than my S55's.

I still think there is some tweaking to be done with my longer irons, but even with that proviso, these are so easy to hit, and just fantastic.

I'm a 4 handicap by the way.

Short and sweet guys.

Well, I done did it now. Had a really nice season with my G15's and CFS stiff shafts, but obviously I was always eyeing some G25's. I happened to click on 3balls Wednesday evening, and there was a LH 4-UW black dot set of G25's with CFS stiff shafts, VG condition. These don't pop up all that often, so I put the order in. Received them yesterday, cleaned them up a bit (they were better than VG condition--some shelf wear but barely hit otherwise), and put them in the bag for today's round. Had about 30 minutes of range time to hit them this morning before my round. Then dove right in.

Here's the skinny. I shot my best round of the season. Somewhat attributable to the G25's, and somewhat in spite of the G25's. I hit some great shots with the G25's, and some not so great shots. The G25's are definitely slimmer and look "better". But my take is that they are not quite as forgiving as the G15's. It's all relative, but that is what my gut is saying. The G15's get the ball up a bit better, and don't dig quite as much. Flip side, is that even with some dug shots with the G25's, they cut through the turf better, so despite the slight digging, the shot comes out better than with the G15's on a mishit. Plus, this was only my first time out with the G25's, so even going from G to G, they likely need a bit of adjusting to. I can't deny that they contributed to an excellent round today,

Bottom line, I am still all-in on the Ping G series, and I suspect these G25's will be in my bag at the start of next season. Sure, I have other sets around that I will still play in the offseason. But when push comes to shove, nothing works better for me than the G's.

Going on 2 years with the G25's.

One of the things i have been VERY pleased with is the sole design. At first glance it appears that the would be very clunky, but the design allows for a great amount of versatility and has great turf interaction.

My new G25s just came today at my club! I played with them right away without any range time (no time for that!)

First round with them on a course I have never played. I shot 82, best round of the year with the most birdies. The course was rather easy tho.

Too bad my short games sucked because I could have shoot 78-79. I changed my 2 regular wedges (54 and 60 Vokeys) for a 52 and 58 Ping wedge and I had a lot of troubles around the green (too much bounce, I've bladed about 3 shots).

These clubs are incredible, especially on Par 3 when you just have to point and shoot. I haven't been so close to an ace in 2 years.

I can't believe how much I like the CFS shafts. My old KBS shaft were heavy and I feel so much free when I swing the CFS. My dispersion is as tight.

Strange fact, I've found that the 3 and 4 irons was easier to hit and longer with my S56 than then the G25. Maybe I will make a combo or something like this. (Or practice more, that would help)

I like Rick's videos but this one seems pretty crappy. Way too much variation in ball strike quality to judge the clubs properly.

Before purchasing my G25's I spent some time on the launch monitor comparing back to back with a G20 (7-irons). Out of maybe 10 swings only about 3-4 were worthy to be used in a club comparison. The variation between launch, for example, was over 2* between good strikes and bad. You gotta discard poorly struck shots from the sampling.

Regarding the clubs in general, G30 has longer shafts and jacked lofts. For that reason I'd expect them to hit the ball longer in the long irons. If you need that then get the 30's.

Coming from the G15's, my first round out last weekend with the G25's was my best round ever. Second round out with the G25's this past weekend, bested my best round ever. It wasn't only the G25's, but they sure played a big role. Technically, I still think the G15's may be slightly more forgiving, but these G25's are scoring machines. Love 'em.

I just bought a set of g25's last week and played my first round with them yesterday. I was not sure what to expect because I have tried g15's before and they did not work out for me. I played a pretty solid round but I am not sold on these irons so far. I am not sure what it is, but I feel like I do not make solid contact as often with these as with my current irons, i20's.

How long did it take to adjust to these irons? I want to give them more of a chance, but in all honesty I seem to hit the i20's much better so I don't know that it's really worth going through an adjustment period. The g25's and my i20's are both black dot and have CFS stiff shafts. My handicap is 5.5.

If you're saying you don't hit these as well, I have no answer, but if you're talking more about "feel" then the i-series has a firmer insert than the softer insert in the G-series and the S-series, so that could be a difference in feel.

I'm a six handicap who just bought a set of G25 irons, coming from ap2s. I've had several range sessions and so far I'm happy with what I see. And what I see are one high, straight ball after another :). No, they don't feel as good as my Titleist do...And I much prefer my AP2s look at address. However, from impact on I really like G25 results.

I hope to play this weekend to see how they play when it's for real , but hopes are high I've found a fun set to make my iron play more simplified.

A couple of thoughts. I don't think one round is enough time to truly judge an iron. I think several rounds are a minimum to get used to the overall feel, swing, turf interaction, etc. Also, in all honesty, I would think that as a 5.5 HC you should be able to throw darts with the G25's. That said, it's your game, your swing, your comfort level, your money, etc.

But to give the G25's a true fair shake, I'd give them a few rounds at least. Then, if you're just not feeling it with the G25's, cut bait and go back to your i20's. The i20's are great irons.

I agree about giving it a few more rounds before throwing in the towel. I want them to work, I feel like they should save me some strokes compared to the i20's. I think the i20's are actually pretty forgiving too, the 5 iron is almost as big as a G iron. I don't mind the look of the g25's at all, I'm not the type to think they are too fat, too offset or whatever else. For me it's really just the contact, which is weird. I feel like I flush the i20's more often even on the range alternating shots. I'll give them some more time and post my results. I am in no way trying to bash these irons, I want them to work and I feel like it makes sense to play them.

Alright people, I finally pulled the trigger on a mint set of G25s! Not quite my spec, but close enough.

After hitting another golfer's G25s on the range this past Tuesday (reg flex and flatter lie angle than I would normally use), I told myself "wow these are dead easy to hit at a target". They feel great too, seriously softer than the i25s IMO.

Pumped to get them.

Another round today as a single and played 83 (Par 73). I was +3 on my front and even par on the back until the 13th hole when I've reach the group of hackers in front of me. It broke my rythm and I had to double on the last 3 holes.

Golf is so fun with these! I can't believe how much I struggled with my S56 even if I found them forgiving back in time.

Because I was alone for the first 13th hole, I played 2 balls with my iron shots and can't believe how much my ballstrking improved with the G25. The dispersion is quite tight and the distance is perfect for me.

The only thing I don't like is the PW loft which is too strong for my game.
